"Just Lucky to be Here"

A buddy of mine is a Mercedes tech. A few years ago, I mentioned that stealing cars is something I’d like to know how to do. I don’t actually want to do it, but car theft is a skill that, in the right situation, would probably come in quite handy. He told me that the best way is to hammer a screwdriver into the ignition and twist. It’s simple and effective, and anybody can do it. Well, Eric’s advice got some independent confirmation this morning.  The front page of today’s Seattle Times features the saga of Liam Moynihan, a twenty-three year old man responsible for the theft of one hundred and thirty-six cars. The prosecutor want’s to give him ten years, which I think is ridiculous. Sure, it’s bad to steal cars, but it’s hardly worthy of a decade in jail.  Here’s hoping they let him off easy …

As one of Liam’s victims I don’t think that 9 years is too bad. And considering the fact that I’ll probably never see a penny of the restitution I was awarded, I really don’t see his sentence as a bad idea.

Look David, the guy isn’t nuts, he’s a realist. People were inconvenieced, and maybe they lost a little cash. Ten years in jail is ridiculous. And please don’t start whining that insurance money doesn’t grow on trees. Everybody knows it doesn’t. After all, why would insurance companies bother to grow money when they can just pluck it out of your pocket? Insurance is a legally-mandated cartel designed to make you pay lots of money for something you aren’t supposed to ever use. And if you do wind up needing it, even through no fault of your own, the companies will try as hard as they possibly can to screw you. This case is a classic example:

Can you imagine getting a car returned to you that was stolen? Man…the car just wouldn’t feel the same again. Also, what if one of the cars he stold belonged to someone who needed it for an emergency (medical, job, family, whatever), it could have seriously caused problems for them.
I like to joy ride too, but you can take a 10 -15 minute joy ride at a dealership and only hurt the feelings of the sales guy when you walk away. Heck, some dealerships will even let you have the car for 24 hours.

Hey, think of it this way.. if his average car stolen is worth $10,000 (probably on the cheap side) and the average person makes $30,000/year, then he’s stolen ~43 years of other people’s working lives. [even if insurance pays for the car, that money comes from somewhere. insurance isn't a magical money factory.] He should get 43 years in jail, in my opinion. He’s scum. When he gets out, he’ll probably steal a car from the parking lot to get home.

Let him off easy…are you nuts? I’m guessing you have never had a car stolen, or are one of those people that doesn’t care about other peoples stuff. They should lock this guy up and throw away the key. They used to hang horse thieves, what’s the difference here?

I would like to see him get close to ten years. How would you like it if one of those cars was yours. I know if I ever caught someone in the act of stealing mine, he would be hospitalized.

He’s obviously no assest to the community. He has a record and hasn’t learned his lesson. Wait until the day he runs from the police in a stolen car and kills some people and kids in a crash.

Stealing cars isn’t hard, even if its over a hundred. Any uneducated moron can do it. He’s scum and needs to get a job.

heh. I think it’s funny when they show stuff like that on Masterminds and they show the cars being stolen in the recreation. If I wanted to, I could tape it and practice it. LAWL.
