There is a lot of cool and crazy stuff at SEMA, but these clear D’Vinci Forgiato Radurra wheels definitely caught my eye. They’re two inch thick polycarbonate, and are available in 20, 22 and 24 inch sizes for around $2k each.

Great blog on cars and the automotive industry. The clear wheels sure are different. Wonder what they’ll get nicknamed if they make it big and get featured in R & B music videos?

Here’s a great article on trendy car wheels and rims and how they have become the hottest car accessory for thieves and what can be done to stop this new form of auto theft – this is a must read for everyone that cherishes their car and wheels:

Oh man im so tired of people reffering to thigs as “Ricer” you dont even know how to critiqe something you uts want to rip on it.
Me personally,I dont like these wheels but theyre great for show applications like showing off big brake kits ans shocasing tire sizes and stuff like that.
I saw these wheels in an issue of modified or sport compact or something and im not personally into them but theres an application for anything.
You dont have to trash talk them cuz of theyre weight. Its not like your gonna take a set of these to the track.
Different strokes for different folks.
And as far as spinners on these wheels …..well i wont say anything about spinners but id ont own a 50 cent CD thats for sure.
And for you domestic kids that think if something has as much as a honda badge on it and call it a ricer wait till theres a turn inthe road and that car kisses your “rustang” goodbye.
Just remember its all about the application and the context of things. Every car is good its just what you do with it.

I wonder if you could have a custom design etched into the polycarbonate sheets…perhaps it would weaken the structure?

I must say I’m not to keen on them, what would happen if you were driving along and someone shot at the polycarbonate and it shattered…a nasty accident that’s wot!

Ike, you’re an idiot. First, there wasn’t any “drifting” in that video. What you and your retard friend were doing is called “doing donuts.” Second, a hard turn involves going something faster than 20mph in an empty parking lot. Third, hard braking and brake dust also involve going something faster than 20mph in an empty parking lot. Fourth, you’re still an idiot.

I was involved in a concept of these wheels a couple of years ago and the plexiglass compound was 1.3 times as strong as a forged aluminum wheel. I just hope someone finally makes these wheels for a motorcycle!!! Looks fast standing still!!!!

First off D’Vinci’s clear wheel is the gayest concept I’ve ever seen. Second, there booth looked like they wanted to be like Giovanna. That wheel is a Joke, who ever buy’s these is wasting their money.

For good or for bad, these wheels have put the spotlight on the wheel industry again. Spinners, floaters, and lighted wheels are all old news. These clear wheels, as dysfunctional as they are, represent new thinking in the industry and that is a good thing.

Someone who can afford dropping $2k per rim can afford to take their car in for regular detailing, and thus leave the problem of figuring out an easy way of cleaning them to the boys at the detail shop.

Lexan wheels would weight 5% more than their 6061 T-6 Aluminum counterparts. That aluminum has a compressive strength to weight ratio of 345,000 inches. Lexan Polycarb comes in at 328,000 inches. (A filament of that height would break.) The rim could be Lexan as well.

ChriSal
Nov 3, 2006 at 5:17 am

Agreed with Franz, this is only a show car rim. this serves no function on a car other than a show piece. it is definately heavier than a three piece because for plastic to either be that dense or that thick, would require more weight.

No one wondering about the temp that the brake will reach with that closed wheel??

me
Nov 2, 2006 at 8:53 pm

i think the only good purpose of these is for show only…… for $2k each you don’t want them scratched, shattered, dirtied, etc

anonymous
Nov 2, 2006 at 8:14 pm

agree on brake dust, but great concept. maybe some holes on the wheel so you could reach around and clean.

bill
Nov 2, 2006 at 7:25 pm

how would you clean the inside without taking off the wheel?

Jeremy Cox
Nov 2, 2006 at 7:18 pm

polycarbonate is very heavy… I doubt it can be lighter than a 3 piece.

Idiotwheels
Nov 2, 2006 at 6:24 pm

Yeah — I bet these will look just great after about 5 miles of actual driving. Brake dust alone will coat the inside of these things and they’ll look like crap.

Nov 1, 2006 at 10:32 pm

These are an AMAZING idea. Even better if they put a chrome or body colored spinner on it, so it’d look like it spinning on air.

TO CARDOMAIN: )U guys and gals seriously have some of the BEST event coverage ive ever seen online. MAD MAD MAD PROPS. please check out my customized model cars, and i dont want to be greedy, but a feature would be MOST MOST MOST APPRECIATED. U ever seen a model with 180 DEGREE LAMBO’S on the front and LAMBO’S ON THE REAR?!? Well i did that to one of my models

Blake
Nov 1, 2006 at 2:45 am

I wonder how much they weight? Could they be lighter than even a 3-piece wheel? I think personally that they are awesome, especially for a car with something like a gran turismo Brembo brake kit.
