Three Cars That Needed To Be Better

Hey, Detroit had pretty good show. Especially GM. But there are three new cars that worry me a bit. And these aren’t concepts, these are cars that are coming to showrooms soon.

1. Ford Focus. Despite a lot of whining from the automotive press we are not getting the cool Euro Focus. We’re sill getting a lame US rental car Focus. Bummer.

2. Dodge Avenger. Looks like a bastard child of a Charger and Caliber. Kind of sad, cause the last Dodge Avenger was a good looking car.

3. Chevy Malibu. This one isn’t that bad, but GM really needs to be knocking it out of the park with their midsize offerings.

Am I being too harsh? What do you guys think?

Yawn

man dude, your a little harsh don’t you think. And actually now that I’ve gone to the auto show and saw the malibu in person, I can say that some of the pictures don’t do it justice. It’s actually a really hot car.

The Focus looks better than ever. Ford is on the right track. Take something good and keep making it better.

The other 2 cars make me want to puke. If the domestics can’t make a reliable car, can’t they at least make one that looks decent? Challenger / Camaro you say? Well the Mustang is already here and they can’t build them fast enough. GM and Chrysler need to get their act together and start selling CARS not just CONCEPTS.

Firstly, I agree that there is only minimal change in the focus styling, but I prefer its styling over the other two selections. It seems to have nicely blended the lines for a more modern feel, while stealing inspiration, in my opinion, from the new comparable Nissans. Regardless, the styling takes a firm swing toward the GM bodies of the GTO and European equivalents with the fender scoops and minor detailing.
Next, that dodge, well they could all be under the same name; Caliber, Charger, and this Avenger seem to take the 300C platform too far. Hopefully this lack of variety allows for a longer life expectancy than GM and Ford.
Finnaly, the Malibu. What was wrong with the last one? It had a clean look and it blended in. Now it sticks out, thanks to its over sized grille. The issue hear is that this car needs the entire body to be redesigned to compliment such a large grille design. Yes that means you have to actually change the headlights!
In summary I am largely dissapointed with these new concepts. I would be unpleased to drive any of these cars in their conceptual form. After their dulling for production, these cars will become only more undesirable.

the avengers looks like a smushed charger with the calibers front end; a lot of the lines that look good on a bigger car like the charger are unneccessary here, and are just cluttering up the overall look. The malibu’s overall shape looks much better than the previous one, but the grill is too big. The top half of the grill is too far from the bottom half, and it looks like it was pushed up into the hood. the focus is still ugly, and hasn’t looked decent since the first generation.

I don’t know I thought the malibu was good. It’s just that the exterior dosen’t scream racy like the new cts; but, then again, the malibu is supposed to compete against the accord and camry, so the designers probably wanted the car to appeal to a broader spectrum of people, and that means that the styling has to be very “inoffensive”

I really like the 2008 Chevy Malibu. I drive a 2001 ‘BU and I think this latest version is super cool.

I also like the Avenger. It may be a “baby” Charger, but it has some great styling features.

american cars have too many unfocsed lines, some (useless) lines, some people just like plain stuff…kinda like sleeper style sorta stuff…and huh they need to move towards the more sporty look…IS WHAT I THINK…however great coverage and yeah europe gets all the nice hacthbakcs once again…

I have to give credit to Chevy. They have really stepped up lately. They are actually representing American made cars in a good way. Right on Chevy and hurry up New Camaro. :)

once again, great event coverage. but i have one “complaint.” there are AALLOTT of “double pics”; two pics of the same car taken from almost EXACTLY the same angle. why dont u just delete some of them?

Come on, the Avenger looks great. Since when is it bad to have stylign elements in common? BMW does it, Toyota does it, Mercedes does it… every Dodge has to be unique now?

Much Agreed, The one I don’t understand the most is the Focus. The R&D cost is already done, it’s a proven platform. Seems like a no brainer… Ford BE BOLD for once
