Missed Shift = Spun Rod Bearing
Posted by: Stephanie AKA TECHICK_STI |
Someone was test driving this 2004 WRX when the unfortunate event occurred. The kid miss-shifted from 3rd to 2nd, revving it to 10,000+ RPM, which instantly spun a rod bearing and littered the motor with metal shavings. I was asked if I would be willing to rebuild the new motor that was to replace the old. Instant yes! The rebuild was simple: bare block and all new parts. Easy and clean and finished quickly! Things went together with no problems. With the motor ready for install, what followed was the usual aligning of the motor with the transmission, hooking up the last of the harness, installing the turbo and top mount, exhaust, radiator, fans and hoses, and then the car was ready for fluids. Overall the swap went extremely well. What shocked me the most was the amount of damage done. The image below shows the damage to the crank! Picture what was left of the bearings!

That’s what a rev limiter is for. It’s cheap insurance!

I did the same thing in my 98 Suzuki Esteem.. Not sure where the rpms ended up at.. But every morning gotta let her ‘warm up’. When cold she rattles like crazy..After the temp gauge starts to move it goes away.. Still runs great ,no smoke or comsumption. But what a pisser..

Don’t ya just hate those mis-shifts…
Yeah, I’ve never spun a bearin, but come pretty close. That is a lot of damage for one misshift… gotta be careful there, especially test driving a car…

Ive spun Subaru berings before, twice in EJ22s, both motors went in the same 92 Subaru Legacy. Its not hard to do over time, Ie drive the hell out of it. But it just shows how indestructable Subarus really are, most cars would have had a valve or a rod failure almost instantly after the bering supn.
