Wear Your Seatbelt, Save Your Friends

By Jen Dunnaway

Those Brits really know how to scare kids straight: check out this grisly pro-seatbelt advert and watch an unbelted passenger become a deadly human projectile. You have to wonder, though…would this happen in real life? While the ad’s depiction of the flying kid systematically massacring his friends is a bit over the top, it’s well established that unbelted passengers tend to get all over the place during a crash—just ask this guy. If you’re the driver, an unsecured rear passenger will more than double your odds of being killed in the event of a head-on collision. Recent attention to this "backseat bullet" phenomenon has many states reevaluating laws that exempt rear passengers from the Click-It-or-Ticket requirement. Now, I know everyone’s got one of those crash stories that goes, if so-and-so had been wearing a seatbelt, they’d be dead. Heck, even Suzy Bruisy herself, a staunch seatbelt believer, once walked away from an Aerostar rollover after having been caught napping and unbelted in the backseat when the van went shiny side down. Statistically, though, I was lucky. So were my mom and my best friend, whom I miraculously managed not to annihilate by human cannonball.

I know there are always exceptions, but it really has been clearly proven that seat belts save lives. However, I do agree with Adrian’s point, seat belts alone don’t work. More work needs to go into a car’s structure.

thats just rediculous my brother almost died form havin a seat belt on so dont tell me to constantly buckle up i was in a horrendous t-bones type accident and my brother will never remember it because he was wearing a seat belt now i agree seat belts save live but you suzy bruisy are far to opinionated and i and others seem to not like it. state the facts occasionally add opinions but dont make every comment an opinion it is the sign of an uneducated person. other than that i normally agree with your opinions especially when it comes to politics so dont take this the wrong way.

I think that more should be put into a cars structure and air bag system, becasue its obvious that seat belts, while working for some situations, do not do a 100% effective job. I think this topic has been left un touched for to long and should be examined more properly in a wider range of realistic accidents. Just to see what the seat belt actually is doing.
