"Monster" Miata on eBay!
Posted by: John "Just Lucky to be Here" |
For a while now, I’ve wanted to pick up an old Miata and try my hand at autocross, so I’ll occasionally go look for them on eBay. At 23 grand, this one is a little out of my price range, but it sure would be fun to have. Monster Motorsports swapped the stock 1.8 liter four-banger for a five-liter V8. It weighs in at just under 2500 pounds, and with 300+ horses, you know it’s going to be a kick in the pants to drive. Can anyone spot me 23 grand? |

Hey John,
Even if you do the conversion yourself you will be into it for about $15,000 to $20,000. I am sure you could do it for cheaper but the finished product will look like it. I am doing a 1999 and will spare no expense on what I put into the car. By the time I am done ( probably in April of 2008 ) it will have probably cost me my marriage. Oh well I guess that is why I had ” Till death do us Part ” put on the back of my car. If you haven’t started or you have and need some info let me know. ddickte@yahoo.com. I live in the Chicago sub. but am titling and plating it in Florida where I have a condo. As there are no emissions to pass and no inspections. You have to do what you have to do to have fun. Good luck on your build and hope it is all worth it to you.

Hey WMT would like to talk to you about your experience building the Monster Miatas.
I’m in the planning stages of turning my ’93 into one, and could use your input.

I helped build these in the 90′s at MM in escondido. this car still has the original exhaust that MM used to install, it is not smog legal in states like CA and NY as it stands.
to correct this it needs the other O2 sensor hooked up (we only used 1…), smog legal headers (the JBA shorty’s we used are not accepted as legal in CA and NY), 4 CAT converters (we only used 1) and a working check engine light (never hooked up because the use of only 1 O2 sensor had it on all the time, along with an annoying idle surge….)
the list above of things not done correctly along with the customer being told when they paid $15,000+ for the conversion that it was totally legal are large contributors to why MM is no longer.
I still have one of these cars. a hoot to drive and a fantastic sleeper, but I had to fix all of these things years ago when CA started test only stations as mandatory every other smog year and mine got caught =D
the winning bidder may be in for an expensive shock when they try and smog it. having a shop do all of these things will cost you parts and labor in the ballpark of $1,500 – $3,000
