The Trabants of Iceland

What’s the coolest thing to come out of former East Germany? Okay, besides Rammstein… Without question, it’s the Trabant: a loveable, resilient, 25 hp people-mover featuring body panels made of Duroplast, a composite of recycled materials including plastic and cotton fibers. While the Trabbi’s filthy two-stroke engine presents obvious EPA red-tape issues and makes them a rarity in the US, they’ve gained a healthy following in other countries, where they’re sometimes even tricked out as tuners or rally cars. A place where love for the Trabant seems especially strong is Iceland, which even boasts an electro band named after the car. Based in the capital city of Reykjavik, CarDomain member jontrabbi clearly has a sense of humor about the Trabant. In addition to cool photos of his own “Slowrider,” his ride page consists of a kind of tribute to the colorful Trabbis of his home country. Apparently, they have DeLoreans in Iceland too!

Hi! Thank you so much for sharing. Indeed, the trabant which was produced from East Germany came a long way to become one of history’s small and yet very significant car because it was used as a symbol of positive sides of East Germany. Keep em coming! :)
