Do All RX-7s Have Weak Nuts?

By Bernard

JDM Fanboy

During lunch today, my boy Jerry over at Injen sent me a link to what I thought was gonna be some great auto-x run video. Umm, yeah…I was totally wrong. Remember: lefty-loosy, righty-tighty!

Watch the video on the Team JaMoto site. And Jerry, get your ass back to work!

FD with no nuts!

Eric Webber, are you retarded? How can you blame Mazda for lug nuts falling off? Especially with aftermarket wheels and nuts. How about you shut up and go wrap your Honda around a telephone pole or something.

wow. im speechless. the same thing could have happened to my rears yesterday. i was fixing my rear sway bar and set the lugs tight enough to keep the rim on. once i lowered the car, i went into the house only to fall asleep, wake up the next morning, almost drive my car a couple (like 15-20) miles away, and remember that i forgot to torque them down. that would have been one hella ugly accident waiting to happen. sucks for that dude. looks like theres some damage to the rear.

Someone in a local forum heard:
“he went to get new lug nuts to match the enkie’s that he purchased. The shop sold him lug nuts for a 1/2″ lug instead of a 12mm.
One of the people at the autox event swore the guy torqued them down prior to running.”

Hoooly Shat!

I couldn’t get the video to work, but I think the still says it all.

I guess it’s lug failure, but knot knowing the specifi equipment, it could be a wrong choice in lugs i.e. conical when the rims have flat seats, or maybe under-torquing.

I have trouble believing that oem lugs would be under-designed. They’re always over-designed, if anything. Everything relies on the wheels staying on the freaking car.

I recently had my Durango inspected. The shop knew I did my own work. They told me I had to replace the upper ball joints (big surprise) and that the passenger-side was really bad, which I knew but I wanted to see what exactly they caught before I worked on the truck to pass inspection.

I got the truck back and replaced the passenger ball joint first. The truck was driveable and it was going to be another week or two before I could do the other side. I started driving it in the meantime, to help lessen the mileage being put on the Grand Prix.

I was driving the truck one day, and started hearing a tap which was getting worse. I then noticed the tap went away at curves/turns. I stopped the truck right there and discovered every lug on the driver side was loose.

I contacted the shop and impressed upon them that when a wheel is put on a vehicle, no matter what the circumstances, that wheel is torqued on 100% every time.

I didn’t take it back to those idiots to finish inspection. Nothing ruins a day like losing a wheel or two, or worse.
