This Just In: New on the Net

It looks like everyone in the US is getting hot weather this week. Does yanking the AC unit to save weight and gain HP seem like a good idea right now?

  • Wow, NASCAR drivers sure had good times this weekend. In fact, it sounds like NASCAR truck driver Aaron Fike was having a little too much fun: Deadspin
  • Mazda added a pretty cool chat feature to their website today that lets potential car buyers chat with Mazda representatives and get real quotes (not MSRP) when they configure a car—further proof that Mazda is the best thing Ford has going right now: Freep
  • Ford is pairing up with Edison in SoCal to test integrating plug-in hybrids into the power grid: LA Times
  • By mid-summer, we might live in a country where imports have more than 50% of the market. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Jalopnik

I love these posts. Can’t believe that guy got busted for Having Heroin in his truck. I hope Nascar pulls his ride for the rest of the season. He deserves no place in the public eye.

i’m surprised it took this long for imports to get over half the market…

I don’t think yanking the AC out of a car is a good idea unless you live in Canada or above, unless the car is strictly for the track. You’re not gonna lose a lot of weight and the A/C causes very little drag on the belt when it’s turned off, although the unengaged pulley slows changes in serp belt momentum by virtue of its weight (but still not much).

I’m not surprised Ford is bringing up pland for plug-in hybrids, and I’m also not surprised it will take several years for Ford or any other major auto maker to take several years to do what some tweakers have done years ago by modifying hybrids for plug-in. This slowness to adapt and improve is pathetic. It’s planned obsolescence at its finest.

Imports at more than 50% of the market? That CAN’T be good news. It means we can’t compete with our domestic product. Can we afford to lose our auto industry entirely? No freaking way, but good leadership and bringing back the way we led the world decades ago has to happen. I hope it can, otherwise there will be yet another of our entire markets overcome by other countries, even less manufacturing jobs and even more gross dependency on outside sources for us to meet our needs.

A major part of America has been our Independence. Independence in EVERY way. Economically, Politically, Ideologically, etc. When we lose that, we are not the America we were. We would no longer be the America we should be.
