A Day at the Races

By David

Call it a hazard of the job, but usually when I’m at the track I’m also on the clock. While everyone is watching the action, I’m wearing my editor hat and meeting with people, wrangling writers and photographers, shaking babies or helping organize something. Not this past weekend. I spent the weekend up at Mid-Ohio for the Acura Sports Car Challenge and The Honda 200 at Mid-Ohio. The weekend’s card included Indy cars, ALMS endurance machines and World Challenge door-slammers.

Honda used the event to anchor the press introduction for the forthcoming S2000 CR and Civc Si Mugen Sedan, but they left the weekend free so we could watch the action. The crowds were huuuge, the action was quite good, and the hospitality topnotch. (This photo was taken Saturday; the crowds were much bigger for Sunday’s Indy car race.) I forgot how much fun it can be to go to the track and just relax with friends and watch the cars race by. Thanks, Honda, for a good time and a reminder of how things are supposed to be.

I was also at that race, although I was working the grandstands at the end of the straight. Mid-Ohio is one heck of a track to watch a race at. My favorite part (other than getting a free pass and t-shirt) had to be the in traffic pass by one of the Audi drivers. He passed the Porsche ahead of him while dodging slower traffic. It was a thing of beauty. You should back here to Mid-Ohio next summer when they have the vintage grand prix.

Well, glad to see that you enjoyed the races at Mid-Ohio, taking a race in person is always amazing, the smell of gasoline, diesel and burnt rubber, plus the sounds of the engines firing before the green flag to seeing the checkered flag, amazing… I have to admit I watched the races from Mid-Ohio races on TV and they were not bad. What did you think of the GT2-class battle between Sola and Enge in the ALMS race? What a battle and its over too… the team fired Enge right after he got out of his car during Staturdays race.

Sunday’s race wasn’t bad either for the IRL, one question, did you hear something about Honda/Acura giving there employees that work in two of there plants near by free tickets, hear on the broadcast 15,000 and then someone on WindTunnel said 35,000?

Bottom Line good racing, go Dario for the IRL IndyCar Series championship.
