Roadside Freakshow in Murdo, South Dakota!

By Jen

AKA SusyBruisy

Okay, so this whole place is like something out of a David Lynch movie. I mean, it’s called “Murdo”—and get a load of the spooky motel I stayed at last night. Clearly the best thing about this kitschy-eerie town is the Pioneer Auto Show, a roadside museum stuffed to the rafters with junk—and as any car nut will understand, I mean “junk” in the most admiring possible sense. Housed at Pioneer were cars that I never thought I’d meet in person, like a Kaiser Darrin and a Trabant wagon. Other oddities abounded, including the weird trio pictured: a Lloyd microvan, a Subaru 360, and a King Midget. The vehicles here are mostly unrestored, rust-free, and begging to be rescued. And the best thing is, virtually any of them can be bought cheap for the asking. If you’re looking for something rare and unmolested for your next project, swing by Murdo and make an offer. Check out page three of my Escort’s ride page for more pics of the Pioneer collection.

Oh man! If I was handy with a wrench, had a garage, somehow managed to go to South Dakota, and had a little time, I’d love to have one of those quirky old cars!
