Caprice Special Editions: 9C1 Cop Car / Impala SS
By David
AKA Highspeedhijinks
Since the mid ‘80s, the large and durable Caprice has been used by police departments and taxi services. GM designated the police package models as a 9C1s, and using the LT1 engine, they made about 260 horsepower. They kept these "tubs" on the road by beefing up the suspension, adding bigger brakes with rear discs, sturdier coolant hoses and posi rear ends. Of course, cops aren’t the only people who’ve gotten their hands on these rides. Check out these killer examples from bluesbroracing, 95LT19C1 and possezd-ss. I wonder how many lead-foots slow down when they see these guys coming?
Now if you take the police package, add a nicer grille, some 17" alloys and a cool maroon paint job, you’ve got an Impala SS. When these cars were released, this was the first time that the name Impala had been used since the early ‘80s, and the new rides were greeted enthusiastically. There are plenty of these great ones on CarDomain, and tone0304, Blaz28e and pimpala1218 have some of the best, so if you’re a bow tie fan, you’ll want to check them out. There’s a rumor that GM will bring back a rear wheel drive Impala SS, but a Caprice concept has yet to be seen. Don’t worry though, if I hear anything, I’ll let you know!
