Keeping it Cool
By Jen

People will do some pretty crazy things to beat the heat. Check out this maniac in Houston, too cheap to fix his car’s A/C, who strapped a window-box unit to his roof. As Gizmodo points out, he seems pretty satisfied with himself. But will his sunroof mechanism ever be the same after this?

Highspeedhijinks: He’s from Houston, and yes… it is THAT hot here, lol… Personally, I think he just need a wing on it, for some downforce and he’ll be fine… If it starts to draw powa, He’ll just kick in his V-TAK. problem solved.

Trying to fully grasp the last post. The A/C system under the hood functions in the exact same way as the absurd box on his roof. R143a coolant gas is decompressed in part of the system to create cold, then recompressed on the outside to vent heat.
By integrating the A/C components under the hood and using some of the engine’s energy to compress the gas, well, that’s the best possible way to operate the A/C. By planting a window unit on the roof (fighting back the laughter) drag is created which will affect mileage, damage will surely happen to the roof, Rain water will call the floor pan “home” and result in mold and mildew, the voltage regulator and/or alternator are being put into jeopardy with the long-term drain…
If I have to sum it up in a single word, I guess “insanity” might do as well as any.

clever. Car a/c and its function of ridiculous miles of gadgetry mounted just above a 2000 degree cylinder fire (as if plug wires last forever- like never leaking a/c), has been driving my mind every summer for years for something simple in the way less than 10k btuh range. I know 12volt can do it. Why they aren’t has reasons not good enough. Furthermore, I have nearly iced my hand from gently shaking the freon bottle- somebody isn’t doing as simple as it could be, I am certain of it.I have thought of something similar, power invertor etc. I am glad that guy did it, I am not even laughing

This just kills me, rather that A/C Unit is going to kill someone the second he has a fender bender. What a moron!

1) Is it really that hot where he lives, 2) Not only will his sunroof never be the same, neither will his electrical system due to the emense amount of electricity that things gonna draw, and 3) With the money he spent on and Air conditioner and the price to hook it up, couldnt he have fixed his acctual cars AC ? Some people scare me.
