PK Ripper

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

I was pretty into BMX when I was a kid and went through a series of Mongoose bikes (I still miss my old Supergoose, and am thinking of building up a 24 inch cruiser to go on rides with my daughter). One bike I always wanted was a PK Ripper (my little brother still has one, and I have first dibs if he ever decides to sell). Anyway, I was surfing BMXmuseum.com and saw this pic and thought you guys might like it. Old school BMX bikes are definitely sought after these days–prices are rising and people are doing some nice restorations (check out this Ferrari white Redline). So are late 70s/early 80s BMX bikes the Gen X equivalent of late 60s/early 70s muscle cars for Baby Boomers? Maybe we’ll see some of these cool old BMX bikes at Barrett Jackson in a few years.

David, those Kappa frames are cool! I was thinking of looking for a Bontrager 24″ cruiser on eBay.

Mine was a BMX but it wasnt a crazy special edition like this one. it was blue with blue padding. I dont remember if it has a name. All I know is that I rode the thing from training wheels to 2ft high jumps by the time I was 10.

By the way, if you want an old school bike that you can still ride, check out Kappa: http://www.kappabmx.com

I’m (slowly) putting one together. I already have my graphite Tuff IIs.

I think you nailed it on the head–old BMX bikes will probably be our muscle cars, as they remind us of our youth. I still have my MCS Magnum 2000 hanging in the attic. It’s all original circa 1985.
