You Call This Art? I’m Calling You Stupid!
By John
Community Editor
With rare exceptions, we post videos in the blog because we think they’re cool. This is one of those exceptions. Yesterday, Jalopnik posted a video of some idiot German "artist" who thought crushing a Porsche 911 would make for a nice piece—so he took a perfectly good sports car and killed it. God, I hate fancy-pants "artists." They’re even worse than theater, which in my opinion, is just about as bad as things can possibly get. If he wants to make art so badly, maybe he should volunteer for "Bodies… the Exhibition."

Art is an act of self expression. Whether that is creative, criminal, or what we would consider “stupid.” If that is what this guy is truly doing (and that’s a big if) who are we to say he’s not expressing himself? Sure it’s not in his best interest to destroy a Porsche, but that doesn’t make it “not art.”

he’s an idiot but its his money let him do what he wants, i was an art student (and funny thing about it thats not the craziest/dumbest piece of “art” i’ve seen) …but isnt it crazy the rims were all still in tact, also it looks like a combination mini cooper and VW beatle between 1:32-1:50

OK we all agree that thing ain’t art… exhibing it (museum) is an insult to the car makers and if the only motivation for that “artistic expression” is to show how much money that ass has… well I’m really sorry for him, because that only shows how meaning less is his big ass life. He should put the pedal to the medal and make the same “ART” against a wall, at lest that way he could enjoy what that engine could do and have a nice adrenalin rush. That guy is an ass hole >:(

Ok first, that wasn’t art, who the hell was that guy anyway. I’m no art person but, he obviously he doesn’t recognize art. because if he knew art he would have done something else. as for a few of the post on here and u know who u r. saying that a Porsche is just an over price vw is like saying a Corvette, Viper, Ford GTare over priced baseline models of their perspective brands. Obviosly u have never driven such fine pieces like they should b driven. Maybe you would appreciate more cars if u weren’t stuck in your prideful ways of being an American. Yeah I’m 100% AM PROUD of it, I’d b willing to bet that those of u who commented who care that it was a PORSCHE also think the portrait of the dogs playing careds is fine art!

What a dumbass. I don’t really like foreign cars but I have more intelligence than that. to be honest, i would love to have a car like that. If i was there, I would have shot them and stolen the car. To bad his parents never considered birth control. I’ll give him a work of art that will begin with my foot up his ass.

Art is the act of creating something. All this guy did was to destroy someone elses work. The true artists here are the designers and engineers who made this car. Whats this guy going to do for an on core tear up paintings in gallery ?

i think you are all missing the point of this video. you don’t have to speak german, or be an artist, or even like the porsche. look at his clothes… he’s well dressed in what looks like a brand new suit. he picked an expensive sports car… a porsche 911… and crushed it. he’s not an fucking artist! he’s a rich prick! he did this to show all of you that he’s got soooo much money that he can just piss it away! he’s showing off… and he’s prolly got a small dick…nothing more to say except next time use a CIVIC!!!

Oh, and by the way: for those who’d respond by saying “The commentary that’s being made on life has to do with the shock that this act evokes in those that view it”, I say you’re a dumbnut. Is “shock value” the only thing that you can resort to in order to say something meaningful in your art? You’re unskilled, and technically deficient. Even Picasso learned how to paint a pretty tree before he became famous for his cubism. What’s in this guy’s sill set besides being able to press the “on” switch on the crusher?
I’ve been in the arts all my life, and this guy just makes my blood boil.
He should be banned from riding in motor vehicles for the rest of his life. Let him ride on top of his “art”.
David
Sep 11, 2007 at 9:23 pm
There’s art, which is the artist’s commentary about some aspect of life as he/she sees it, and then there’s masturbation. The more an “artist” has to explain the reasons or the motivation behind his commentary in a specific piece of art, the more that artist is simply “pleasuring himself.” You can philosophize it all you want, but if the only one enjoying an artist’s piece is the artist, the piece is nothing but a big spooge on the bedsheet.
(Ooh wait: this guy would probably call that bedsheet art too!)
Destroying art just because you have money to do so and an idiot museum curator who agrees to put the result on disply does not make you an artist. Poor you. You’re SO misunderstood. Go get a real job.

I suppose the filming of the crushing is a form of art…but I still find this completely and totally pointless. I’m not jealous, as it’s his money wasted and not mine, but I do feel he should have at least used a cheaper car. If this had been a Boxster, or something similar, it wouldn’t have bothered me nearly as much. Also, I have to say, there is a place about half an hour from my house that crushes cars and regularly sends semi-trucks with loads of “art” to recycling centers in the area. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if he wanted to buy these car-cubes from them. Of course, since this “art” was made by another “artist”, he’ll have to pay a premium…hell, I bet a Camry Cube is worth as much as an original Picaso painting!

Sep 11, 2007 at 3:58 pm
OK…I am an artist, and sometimes it just escapes me what the F**K people are thinking about, and that for me is the missing link. What did a Porsche 911 do to this guy? As far as I am concerned it is not art, just another display of mans destructive nature. If he wanted to be truly artful he should have done one hell of a detail job on the car making it something Porsche hadn’t thought of. Oh, and don’t give me that crap about artist freedom. Read your art history and you’ll know what I mean. Just to do something because you can afford it, is not art, it is indulgence.
Daniel
Sep 11, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Now what the fcuk is he going to drive home. I made millions displaying a box with dog shit in it. I just dont see the art in crushing a good car and not donating it. i vomited a little when I saw this. What an Austrian dingle berry. Anybody writing and saying that he is just expressing his feelings is a joke. I dont care if he got raped in this thing 2 days ago, you dont crush a car like this or any good car regardless of make.

Sep 11, 2007 at 3:41 pm
If this is art then what about the artists he stole this “idea” from, you know, the guys that destroyed the playstation 3 or the new x-box after waiting in line for it all night. they destroyed those game consoles in front of the people waiting in line that were probably not going ot get one because of avalability.
I don’t really care what he does with his cars there are plenty more where that came from.
Steve
Sep 11, 2007 at 3:12 pm
Whew, at first glance I thought this would be a story about a guy i should care or be worried about. Nope, just some euro-trash idiot looking to get some exposure for his waning career. Sad.
At least he wasn’t crushing anything one-of-a-kind or a rare vehicle. I would hunt him down and hurt him if he did something like that to a 1967 Corvette Stingray or 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.
An act of that kind of disobedience would just have to result in this guy meeting a similar horrible demise.
Maybe we just let him crush whatever he wants provided he’s sitting in the car at the time.

Sep 11, 2007 at 2:16 pm
I find it funny because I can see this guy out there hugging trees and telling people to stop trashing the enviornment, yet he kills a perfectly good car because he feels like “expressing himself”. Just because you have an idea, doesnt mean you do it. Common sense here.
Also, what if everyone in the world felt like expressing themselves in this manner?
Andy
Sep 11, 2007 at 1:49 pm
All of you complainers are just ignorant or jealous. This is a great piece of art created by Porsche and re-created by a man with the money and the vision to stir a thought or emotion in people. The posters who yell about it, really don’t get it. I guess if it was done by just some yahoo that more money than what he knew what to do with and would much sooner crush and throw away a car before he owned a dirty one, I would probably shake my head. However, in this case I shake my head at all the people who don’t appreciate one man’s idea of self expression. Think about all the cost’s involved in buying supplies to create something original? Nobody thought about that, did they?

Too many cool older cars get destroyed in movies and TV all the time, have you ever noticed how many “Boat-tail” Buick Rivieras get destroyed in TV and movies? Now that sort of thing is more of a waste to me!

Tomo
Sep 11, 2007 at 5:43 am
I think all of you who complain that it isn’t art, or that just complain about it don’t understand.
The whole reasoning behind it is that the car meant so much. If he had used any car or one that was already non-functioning where would be the frustration? Where would the aggression be?
The fact that he has it so well documented, how the car crushes from the inside. No one wants to know how a Porsche crushes or how it looks from the inside…certainly an Austrian wouldn’t.
It’s about fighting our perceptions, fighting beauty with destruction, the beauty of destruction and the anguish. Porsches are generally thought of being works of Art in and by themselves, moving or not. So for some part he’s creating art by destroying art.
I think it’s a very nice peice, I don’t think there’s any way one could say there wasn’t enough execution. There was no point in using a “waxed” or “detailed” 911 because the point wasn’t for it to come out anything resembling clean. It’d dirty, molested and destroyed…he wants you to cry about it.
Tom

Sep 11, 2007 at 5:25 am
At least the Schipper guy used die-cast replicas. Someone who destroys a car that can no longer be produced is an idiot. Now, taking a brand-new Ferrari and letting Eddie Gri…I mean, having someone wreck it – well that’s not nearly as bad as a classic 1960’s Ferrari. The difference? If they found out about it, Ferrari could produce one more to make up for the fact that there’s one less out there.
Ian
Sep 11, 2007 at 5:23 am
I get it. It IS art regardless of what any of you think.
Although, I don’t quite understand why he used a dirty car. I also don’t understand why he didn’t use padding on the crusher to reduce scratching. It IS art… but the artist really didn’t take much into consideration before he executed his concept.
Were i the one crazy enough to do this, I would’ve used a black Boxster and had it professionally detailed beforehand…
