Fate of Old Navy Chevies Uncertain
By Jen
Editor
Rumors are swirling around the early-50′s Chevy pickup trucks that have long been a conspicuous fixture in Old Navy clothing store displays. The trucks, used by the stores to pile clothes on, are mostly shells without engines or transmissions, though sheetmetal, glass, chrome, and suspension are generally intact. The body of an Old Navy truck can range anywhere from quick-painted bondo basketcase to solid original. At least some of the trucks have been butchered, the frame cut in half and then bolted back together once inside the store. Word on The H.A.M.B. is that Old Navy will be phasing the out these trucks, possibly up to a thousand, and no one seems to know for sure what will happen to them. Old Navy corporate headquarters has been elusive and contradictory on the subject, raising fears that the Chevies are destined for the crusher due to corporate liability issues. The most frequently-heard claim is that the trucks will be shipped back to their original supplier, the Alan Brasington Network in New York City, which has so far been unavailable for comment on the matter. In the meantime, there’s evidence that the trucks are being sold privately, with one appearing in a dealer showroom in Kansas City and a few others being sighted on car-haulers in various parts of the country. What will happen to the remainder of these beautiful hulks? Here’s hoping that they don’t simply become another example of arrogant corporate misuse of vintage iron.

I would hate to see them just get crushed. They need to auction them off and give the money to there local charity. I have a 48 chevy and love it.

that is a shame thats just wrong maybe they should just get rid of the board of people that decided i wonder hoe they would feel if death was coming, its like the us declaring that all bald eagles were to be caught and destroyed it shouldnt happen come on the are classics and in good shape they should do a online auction for them and have to say they are not liable for anything wrong with them that would be grat bet they would sell almost all of them

I think that is it a shame to misuse classic American ingenuity for a bunch of t-shirt and pants displays. What were these corporate pricks thinking!? If I had the money, I would buy all of them to save these classic beauties from the car-killing crushers and I would auction them to people who actually WANT a decent 50′s Chevy! This body style is actually a favorite of mine, even though I am a Ford man myself, I love almost all Classic Chevy’s due to style, performance, and just all out appeal. Chevy knew what they were doing in the Muscle Car era, I’ll give them that! Don’t crush these beauties!!! Save the Chevy’s!

These trucks are what actually attracted me to go into Old Navy stores. On behalf of all care enthusiast everywhere I say they should kill the people who want to crush these classic vehicles. Its a shame exploiting them to sell $12 t-shirts and $20 hoodies.

I dont know what the liability is. If they sell it…just like the lots that sell cars…AS IS. Hell I will take one as is. These corporate jerks are just that jerks. They have no idea what they have…and dont care. I have restored a 50 and a 51. I dont want to see any old truck crushed.

The sad thing is in this situation is that the trucks most likely will never be sold to to the public. LIABILITY is the name of this game. Old Navy couldnt leagally sell you those trucks unless specified as parts only or scap metal. Some NOS parts supplier will wind up getting his hands on them we hope. Its the same reason all those cars from Spike TV shows cant be sold… there taken apart and sold for scrap as revealed on one of there follow up shows.

you know… 47-53 chev trucks have the same wheel base as 1982-93 Chev S-10′s. There is even a small company out of California that produces a conversion kit to do a cab and sheet metal swap from the old farm truck suspension to the modern IFS chassis. A.D. Engineering, or something like that… Anyway… Old Navy sucks, and if they scrap all that cool old metal rather than offer it up to all the old truck fans who would die to have one, its only one more reason to never shop there. Maybe someone should start a mail campaign to Old Navy HQ to petition for the protection of an endangered species.

Like Evan said it is a pity. But some [expletive] people out to make a quick buck ruin it for the real gearheads who just want a nice truck to drive around. If I got my hands on one I’d stick a nice V8 in it and call it done.

I wonder how many the trailer guy would sell if they, ahem, “Fell off the truck”
Be a pity to see them recycled and or crushed.

That would be a major shame if these truck are crushed. I’ve always wanted a 53 Chevy Truck and would do almost anything for a early 50′s Chevy Truck to fix up and knowing thousands of them are being discarded when there are people who would give these trucks good homes makes me mad.
