Tesla Roadster or Dodge Viper SRT10: Which Would You Rather Have?

By Jen

Editor

For its ‘08 model run, the SRT Viper is finally breaking the 600-hp barrier with retooled and better-aspirated 8.4L V10 (previous SRT Vipers were 8.3L). The modified mill will propel the Viper from 0-60 in under 4 seconds. But the upcoming Tesla all-electric roadster is no slouch either. It will also snap from 0-60 in under 4, but without the Viper’s pricey 10-mpg rating: the only pollution it’ll put out is the tire-smoke from your burnout. Both cars can be had for around $100K. Which one would you rather have, the SRT Viper or the Tesla Roadster?

I know its been a while, so maybe nobody will see this…but:

Jiminy –

Yes, electricity comes largely from burning fossil fuels. However, the amount of polution created is still much much less per mile driven with the Tesla. Power plants are much more efficient than any car engine could hope to be.

Mining may be more harmful if you’re comparing the amount of metal mined to a similar amount of oil. However, since the battery pack in the Tesla is designed to last 100,000 miles, you’d have to be comparing the amount of metal in the Tesla’s battery pack to (for the Viper) the environmental damages caused by the entire process of turning crude oil in the ground into 10,000 gallons of gas. I’m pretty sure the comparison leans in the battery’s favor.

With current technology, there’s just about enough arable land in the US to provide us with enough biodiesel to replace the current use of regular diesel, without any left over for replacing gasoline cars with biodiesel ones. With no land left over to grow food. And the polution from fertilizers and pesticides from the massive farms that it would take to produce that much biodiesel would be enormous, and biodiesel burns as dirty as regular diesel does.

yeah ur kinda right JR, but im talking about cars that are actually street legal, not these huge drag racers that can hit a quarter mile in 6 seconds or less. im talkin bout a car that is street legal, and if u didnt read the other comments i have left, i said myself that it isnt the absolute fastest car in the world, im just sayin if it made more hennesseys then it would be in the record books and stuff like that. but at 250 mph, its actually the second fastest (street legal car) in the world right behind that new car that Shelby is making. but its only 1 mph faster. anyways im done with this thing cuz i know if i go on and on about it then some retard will try and come in thinkin “oh my car will kill ur car” and always think the car the have is better. and chances are, they have a piece of shit. all i have is a Dodge Stealth R/T turbo, and i aint complainin. peace out. oh and still…..Viper, hands down haha.

Although I am very fascinated and intrigued by the new design of the Tesla and the electric motor that powers it, this isn’t really a fair competition! The Viper is the quintessential American Supercar and rivals some of the best cars in the world for less than half the price. Although the gas mileage on the Viper may be rated at 10 mpg, if you’ve got the 100K to shell out for either of these cars, then you should have enough to feed it to wherever it needs to go! The Viper, hands down! Although the Tesla can accelerate, it tops out pretty low (I think at like 130 or something). The Viper can thrash it at the track!

The Tesla is nice but the battery thing does offer some problems because as of now I live like 200 miles from the closest Major city so the car basically would be low by the time i get there so it would be a hassle. The Tesla also is a 2 speed i think it only have 1, 2 and Reverse. The charging stations would be hard to find unless you are carrying a booster pack or a plug with you hahaha. But other than that The Tesla is nice.
I would rather have it be a hybrid (efficient and fast)

I’d probably say the Viper because even though it is “harmful” to the environment it gets you where you need to go with a fill-up.

i just love the viper, the tesla is an amazing machine and who knows, im sure the viper would annihilate it in the 1/4 mile but around the track itd prolly get licked by the tesla. i woudl rather have the viper because lets be honest, it just looks amazing, and with 600 ponies under its skin, who wouldnt be impressed?

to tell the truth i’ve allways been a tuner at heart but when it comes to detroit muscle their is no substitude hands down the viper allthough i would not personally purchase a viper before i spent that kind of money on ONE CAR i’d much rather buy me 3 or four mustangs and build the engines up my self and probably smoke both these cars and still have enough money to take the pussy i got in it to get something to eat

Jake
Nov 26, 2007 at 4:04 am

I’d have to say the Viper. Don’t get me wrong the Tesla has its own ups and downs but it’s going to come down to what are you going to be doing with it. Obviously it’s not going to be your daily driver so gas mileage and efficiency really isn’t a fair argument. These cars are meant for the weekends where they get MAYBE 100 miles a weekend if you’re taking a nice trip to the country or something.

If you’re planning on keeping it stock it’s really gonna come down to preference. Which one looks better? Sounds better? Handles better? Drives better? Take your pick.

If you’re planning on upgrading and making it faster it’s hard not to pick the Viper. The aftermarket is there. You want 1300 horsepower? Done! It’s a no brainer. How do you upgrade an electric car? Hell if I know but I’m sure someone does. Give it a shot and let me know how it turns out.

And to everyone who’s arguing about the Viper and every other current exotic for destroying the earth just take a step back and look out the window as you’re driving around someday. See alot of these kinda cars? Probably not, maybe one or two on a lucky day but I bet you see a ton of full size trucks and SUV’s with their third row seats and torquey V8’s. Like I said, fancy cars aren’t daily drivers but for a lot of folks big trucks and SUV’s are. If there was ever an all-electric horizon I think that’s the place to start looking. :)

What all you electric car loving hippies don’t realize is that electricity comes from burning fossil fuels in 70% of the cases, so whats the difference. Also, the mining for the batteries hurts the environment more than drilling for oil. So Viper all the way, and electrics and hybrids can bite my shiney metal a$$. Besides, if anything should replace gas its diesel/biodiesel. Support your local farmers, not the oil companies.

I can’t wait till some one builds a depleted urainium ( or an equivelant radiation emitting molecular structure) steam turbine engine with a molecular splitter so when it rains we get free fuel…water.
That will even get rid of all of the batteries and feul stations and solve third world power problems as well as provide more corn based products since metanol will be obsolete.
I hear zero “point” or zero sorce will be cool as well.

oops, this is car talk.

I like rolling on 4 wheels, no matter where the power comes from, lmao… oh, well… the clean car is UGLY, I’ll take the viper for now.
Earths already toast and we should all be dead here shortly so, yeah the viper.

Jerome… you better think before you type. My car that i have on here is not as fast as the viper but there are PLENTY of cars on here that could smoke the Viper… so before you get one of the 1500hp drag dudes on here going at it with yah you better just think about what kind of cars are out there.

ok, first of all……the Dodge Hennessey Viper Venom 1000 would fuckin smoke any of your guys’ cars. the bugatti veyron thought it was the fastest for a lil while..but what happened? the venom 1000 came into the picture. if you dont believe me, then go to…. http://forums.motortrend.com/70/6350338/the-general-forum/henessey-viper-kills-veyron-to-200mph-lingen-vette/index.html…. ohh and for all of you lil skyline fans….the skyline wasn’t even in this competition, so what does that tell you?

Too bad we don’t have TWO EARTHS. One for those who give a crap and the other for IDIOTS to surely screw up because they choose to stick with technology that is inefficient and pollutes.

Just because they like the way it sounds or they like its complexity or for whatever freaking stupid reason.

deff the tesla

Mr. Farris
Nov 23, 2007 at 11:24 pm

This is kind of an odd comparison. I love the power and sound of a V8 but I gotta say that Tesla is very impressive. With the cost of gas constantly rising and the affects of global warming, that kind of technology is what we need. Most people say that they wouldn’t own a hybrid or otherwise because they don’t have any power, this definantly puts an end to that excuse. Anyway I’d like to own both, the Tesla so that I can drive as long and far as I want, then the Viper for weekend cruises and showin’ off. But there is no way I could ever afford either of them so I’ll just rant on here. Hahaha.

“…the viper beats everything! lol well thats at least what i read,”

There are other cars out there that could lay a Viper to waste.

If I had my choice, it would be a Skyline. Instead of all that torque driving just the rear axle, you could cook all 4 tires, with MUCH more than 600 HP when modified.

Stupid comparison…Let’s see dodge viper, big cool engine, P.O.S interior. Tesla; great gas millage, environmentally friendly, and way over priced. Hmm if you ask me, neither, i go out and by a Lotus Elise (same frame as the Tesla). It handles better, looks better, has an exhaust note, and i can pay for the car and my insurance and gas for the price it would cost me to buy one of these things

The only thing stupider than this question is you. Obviously the Tesla is a better choice. Anyone can take a V10 and crank out 600HP, but how many have ever cranked out that much power from an electric motor? Besides, a good portion of women will appreciate the quieter engine, and still crave the available power that the Tesla has.

Anonymous
Nov 23, 2007 at 6:45 am

Yea I think people need to embrace the future for sure.. man technology these days. I don’t think people should worry about the “cost of gas” because either car probably won’t be your daily driver but if you can say that you can go that fast without having some huge V10 engine guzzling gas… I mean anyone can go fast if you have an engine like that. It’s like baseball, it’s only impressive if they are not on steroids.

Hey, Guys… You can love the gas consuming cars all you want and dump on Electric cars all you want but eventually you’ll have to see therapists because ELECTRIC is what will be happening.
-
The snowball has started rolling down the mountain, dudes and you may dump on electrics, but do some thinking of the possibilities; If electric cars become popular and less gas is consumed as a result, what will happen to the price of gas, HUH?
-
It’s a major-league DUH! so at least show a little respect for those who wanna go with a new technology because if enough do, YOU will pay less at the pump.

The Tesla! Ok, i dont mean to sound like a freak. The Tesla runs a 0-60 in under 4 sec. on computer batteries. The Car is Electric these things are sick. you should check out their main page at http://www.teslamotors.com/ they are sweet cars. I for one am not into wasting my money on buying fuel. especially with the fuel prices going up. I know the Tesla’s cost a ton, but guess what its the future of cars, For the guy asking on who would work on them, its guys like me who are going threw hard freakin classes to get to that point so we can do the work you dont know how to do! Also everyone should convert their diesels to bio-diesel!

Anonymous

I was thinking about buying a viper at one time if I couldn’t get a tesla within a reasonable time, but if people are going to look at me as if I’m one of these viper thugs, then forget it. Eg:

“You’re a pussy. I can outrun your “custom made electric car” with a John Deer lawn tractor because it only exists in your mind.”

So how much $$ are you willing to put on that? I guess people have been test driving a mirage then for all these months. What an idiot.

And you think the viper will pull more chicks? Sorry, don’t think so. Don’t you know that women know that most guys in big muscle cars don’t have that much muscle where it counts?!!

Anonymous
Nov 23, 2007 at 2:06 am

@ ninja “Who the fuck would work on it [the tesla]?”

Well, seeing as a viper has hundreds of moving parts, and the tesla has about 3, the answer is, as you implied, no one. For good reason. There’s be no need to! This is one of the biggest advantages of electric cars that gets missed. Change your tires and wiper blade once in a while and that’s about it.

A., you are so stupid you can not even spell.

B. I don’t own a “ricer civic”, being as I’m pro viper most would assume I’m an American muscle car guy, they would be right, this further reinforces point A.

C. You’re a pussy. I can outrun your “custom made electric car” with a John Deer lawn tractor because it only exists in your mind.

Andrew
Nov 22, 2007 at 6:10 pm

If the question is just asking about owning one of the cars, I would choose the Viper. I mean, regardless of which car I choose, I doubt it would be driven daily. It would probably make a nice weekend car. In that case, the Viper just has that umff factor that I don’t believe the Tesla can match. I completely understand the argument of those in favor of the Tesla, but in my case, the little driving I would do with both cars would put the Viper ahead. And concerning Andy’s comment, if you’re so concerned with gas mileage, how ’bout you get rid of your El Camino? Either that or buy a crappy daily driver with decent mpg.

Dylan Matovski
Nov 22, 2007 at 5:00 pm

Well i guess if all of you viper fans want to keep thinking its an american made car then be my guest but when Dodge shuts down cause no one is buying their cars or any other american made car then maybe the car companies will realize that paying someone $30 an hour to bolt a chair into a car is ridiculous then maybe the viper will be a little less money since for 10k I could make my car have 600hp and not 100k. but I guess everyone on here must know someone who works at a “american made” car company so they have to support them so they wont lose their job

TESLA!!!!

The tesla is faster, more cost affective and is more unique than the viper. 200 miles on a charge is more enough for me. Tesla is defiantly the choice. Electric cars are a new era where 600hp cars have been in production for decades. I Can’t say I’m an environmentalist at all, so this has nothing to do with pollution.

Mike
Nov 21, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Tesla for sure. I would love to hear how it sounds. I was born on the wrong side of the country though. I would certainly drop $100k on a car that is going to be hard to come by. Its not about how much money you have but how you spend it. If you other idiots want to keep the gas prices skyrocketing then keep buying Vipers. If not, demand more cars like the Tesla and up the gas companies (and greedy politicians that support them) out of business.

Dave
Nov 20, 2007 at 9:06 pm

600HP gas-powered sports car? Yawn. So what? That’s been done before – many times.

I’m old too, but I’m not scared of change; I look forward to it. A production electric car with a sports car ability and looks is unique, so I’ll take the Tesla Roadster. As a matter of fact, I already have. I put my money down for one a year ago, and I expect its delivery next August. By that time, anyone want to guess how much gas will cost?

Chuck

TRENDY?
-
TRENDS are for Bell Bottoms, Parachute Pants, 30″ Rims.
-
The advent of Electric Cars is NOT a trend. It’s a realization that there is a BETTER way, and recent developments are showing that we don’t have to be driving around pathetic little boxes.
-
Electric cars still have a lot of improvement coming, and their performance characteristics will only get better and better, whereas gasoline engines have had a CENTURY+ of development and refinement (with the Auto Industry’s full concentration) and they are at the pinnacle of their development.
-
The FUTURE is ELECTRIC. Wanna be in denial, that’s okay. Some people just have issues with change, even if that change is badly needed.

Electric cars are for pussies. I’d rather pollute the shit out of this planet with my 600+hp Viper ’til the wheels fell off.

I would most definately take the viper, especially the ACR. The zero to sixty time for the viper on here is understated, the milage is overstated, and nothing else is taken into consideration; the viper is the best handling american car in production.
Plus, the Tesla looks like something out of the movie Cars.

The more electric cars hit the road, the CHEAPER gas gets!!!

It’s not like Vipers will disappear, although since Chrysler is trying to become profitable (good luck) it’ll probably dump the Viper no matter what.

No question the Viper! I don’t care how fast a car is our how nice it looks, if it sounds like a vacuum it defeats the purpose.

I’m old and I just don’t trust batteries….They are prone to ‘give up the ghost’ with little or no warning!

The USN spent $ billions trying to find a battery for their nuclear torpedoes. Nothing was reliable enough, so they opted for a multi cylinder central shaft swashplate drive, internal combustion engine, inspite of the noise penalty.

I think diesel is the answer!

We already have a Viper, so I want the Tesla. Hybrids are so goofy looking, but not the all-electric Tesla. I have been watching this car from the beginning, and am excited to hear how they do post-production. I haven’t met anyone yet that knew what a Tesla was. If I were truly able to buy right now, I would be hard-pressed in deciding on waiting for a 2009 Tesla or closely checking out the new Viper paint schemes and getting a more immediate driving experience! But when I tell people what car I want, it is the Tesla!

i’d rather have an ‘03 vette. but if i had to decide, i’d take the viper.

a viper would go right by it after 60 and the new viper will do 200 mph and the tesla is only good for like 135-140 mph plus the tesla will probably be less reliable not because it is bad quality but electric cars are somewhat new and parts for it are really expensive im guessing and you wouldnt be able to work on it yourself and even though gas costs a lot more its a lot quicker than recharging plus the tesla makes no sound which is half of the fun and its not dodge’s fault gas is so expensive it’s Bush’s fault

tough question. anyone that could afford the viper wont worry about gas mileage. although the tesla is the fastest electric car now, technology changes all the time and the future will contain more faster electric cars then the tesla. my vote goes towards the viper because we might as well enjoy these gas guzzling muscle cars before they disappear.

I could ask my lady friends, but not too many girls probably know what a Tesla is so Viper it is.

As BlackBirdHighway so eloquently pointed out, it is indeed impressive for the Tesla, an electric… to be a viable choice – with its own distinct advantages – vs. the absolutely voracious piston-pumping Viper.
-
BUT KEEP IN MIND something faster, better, stronger and longer is due to overshadow the Tesla… the Lightning GT.
-
Think of it in these terms. Just the tip of the iceburg is showing for electric cars. Don’t be surprised if in a future blog it’s written that an electric lays the Viper to waste. It’s not only possible from what I’ve seen and read. It’s LIKELY.

The fact that you are even asking this question is huge for Tesla. I mean, you would expect an electric car to be compared with a Prius, but a Viper? Wow.

Of course the Viper wins easily for brute power, which is very cool. But I don’t see it as a daily commuter, which is what more I need, so I’d take the Tesla.

Also, the Tesla is much more exclusive, with only 650 being built in 2008, and all of them already sold out. The wait for a 2009 is what, like a year and a half? I don’t know how many Vipers are being produced, but I’d guess at least 10,000, so they are much easier to get. It’s entirely possible that you could resell the Tesla to some rich guy who doesn’t want to wait for about $150,000, then buy the Viper, and pocket the extra $50,000.

Viper! They make a better impression with the power.

The Viper was the first car I fell in love with. I still love those angry looks, but I’d definitely take the Tesla – times change, you know? I can appreciate the raw power of the Viper, but the Tesla has some beautiful lines and that efficiency and the fact that I can use it anywhere I want to go takes the win for me.

Tesla. If your gonna spend that much, shouldnt it last you forever? Less moving parts, longer lasting, no pollution. However, arent electric cars heavy? I dont remember. Oh well, if I was snooty rich id get the tesla because it will last longer, therefore itd be more worth the money for reliability. How bout an electric Ariel Atom? Ill take that instead.

Viper hands down. Sports are never going to be a good investments, thats why they need to be exhilarating to drive and sound amazing.

…another thought is if i had a viper, i wouldnt care about mpg because it wouldn’t be my daily driver…..if i had a tesla it would be

I’m with Cam I’d rather have a Vette, but the Viper would have to do. I wouldn’t want the electric car. Who the fuck would work on it? Not me, and that is in no way shape or form fine with me. Then again if you have the money for a Viper you more or less don’t care who works on your car. You have the money to shell out whatever is needed.

Hard choice…but the aftermarket for the Viper includes such goodies as the Hennesy twin turbo kits which boost your horses from 600 to 1000….

thats a tough one. The roaring V-10 of the Viper is very tempting, but the Tesla is electric, efficient, fast, and frekaing cool as hell…put me down for a Tesla then!!

This question should be worded… Do you like Spinach or Steak ?

I like Steak!

I’d take the Tesla. It’ll pay it self off in usage and mileage alone. Besides, I’m starting to get sick of 12 mpg in my V8. Oh yeah I love the sound of rumble at idle and all that good stuff, but the mileage is something I don’t enjoy. Especially because to go shopping for food in this town, I have to travel at least 5 miles…one way. That wastes gas and 12 mpg is my average mileage in my El Camino daily driver.
Anyways, I still take the Tesla. It may cost the same as a Viper, but I believe it’s a better investment. Less moving parts to possibly wear out. I would like to see new technologies like this thrive and compete. If they came out with a cheaper coupe model I would consider picking one up.

It’s not all speed that counts…the thump thump of a cam and sweet sound coming out of the exhaust gets me giddy as much as the speed does. The viper gets a triple XXXL vote from me. Damn the hippies and their earth friendly cars( no matter how fast they are.)

I’d rather have a vette but I’d take the Viper, you can’t put a rumble on the tesla!
