Wall of Death: Now With Cars!
By John

Given the steep banks NASCAR runs on, I guess I should have known this was theoretically possible. But seeing it done? Wow! I just didn’t think such a small space would allow time to build up the necessary speed. And maybe it’s my tendency to crash thingsbicycles, cars, skateboards, partiesbut watching those motorcyclists whip around without helmets makes me cringe. Something tells me they don’t get workman’s comp.

I see it now, the wall of death driver’s instructor saying “whatever you do, DON’T stop.”

They better keep working on that act or people will get bored. I expect to see them drifting, Saudi style eventually.

Ah… centrifugal force!! It’s basically the same as that carnival ride where they stick you inside a giant drum and spin you around like a washing machine before they drop the floor. I used to ride that thing till I was sick. Sometimes watching guys on the halfpipe down at the skatepark reminds me of it.

This act is actually a decades old act and started off being done with motorcycles inside a spherical cage. This used to be a common circus act while I was growing up.

I remember going over this in physics in college. In order to have a car ‘stick’ to the side or go around a roller coaster style loop it has to be travelling at a surprisingly slow speed. I would love to try that in a car some time. Not with lunatics on motorcycles racing around me though. could you imagine what would happen if that bike cut you off and you had to slam on your brakes? SCREECH!!! Tumble tumble CRASH!!

I assume the engine runs right the same way the car stays on the wall – all that centrifugal force holds all the fluids in place the same way it holds the car to the side. Totally crazy though – other than some tire skidding sounds, they don’t really seem to be even moving that fast… I wish I could try that… with someone else’s car of course

Wow, that really is crazy. I agree that yes they do it in Nascar but, it’s amazing that it works here. How does the engine Run right????
Cheers
