What Did You Do This Weekend?

By Jen

I found out that my new diesel Escort‘s fuel system is clotted with congealed vegetable oil, which in the Seattle winter is approximately the viscosity of snot. Needless to say, it’s going to take a little more than I thought to get it running. Yay!

How about you? What did you do this weekend?

Ugh!

I was also wondering why the lighter socket in my Firebird wasn’t working. The fuse was blown and replaced but my GPS still wasn’t getting any juice. I pulled the lighter and saw the socket was lightly RUSTED. I guess some moron who presiously owned the car (not to be confused with this moron) left the roof down once (hopefully just once) and the lighter socket got moisturized.

I managed to pull the electrical connector from behind the lighter socket in the console without having to disassemble anything, then cleaned up the contacts and reconnected it, then cleaned the socket.

The best thing is that the power cord to my GPS was easily routed THROUGH the dashboard BEHIND the gauge bezel by simply popping it off, routing the cord inside and popping the bezel back in place. All you see is the GPS to the left of the steering wheel… very nicely placed, readable and reachable while not blocking line-of-sight

I swapped out the bulb in the dome light of my 240 wagon.

Thats a bummer. What will you use to clean it with? I doubt that typical fuel injection cleaners will do a good job. As sad as it sounds Ted might be right with the vinegar thing.

vegetable oil in the fuel system? Whataya clean it out with, white vinegar? Just razzin ya, Jen but it’s a little strange to hear someone talk about cars using stuff I’d use in the kitchen.

Washed the Firebird on Saturday. Only was in the 40′s but since it’s a vert I couldn’t bring it to a car wash and decided to bucket wash it in my driveway. My jacket has these dongles attached to the zippers which I fear couls scratch the paint, so I just didn’t wear it. I’m not a fan of Car washes anyway. “Noodles” scratch paint with debris from other cars and those horse hair brushes at the DIY washes just don’t get a lot of the dirt off without washing twice and spending 15 bucks.

I also drove 2 hours each way to southern Delaware on Sunday to replace a starter in my Mom’s ’97 Grand Caravan, which took about 40 minutes. My advice to anyone who replaces the starter on a 3.3 litre, second gen Caravan is to partially remove the airbox and push the sucker out of the way to get to the top bolt. It’s a great van… if you drive 5,000 miles a year.
