ZR1 or GT40: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

The Ford GT40 is the original American supercar, taking down Ferrari at Le Mans. And Superformance arguably builds the best and most accurate modern day reproduction–over 90 percent of the vehicle’s components are interchangeable with the road-going version of the real GT40s of the 60s. And now Chevy has created a modern day supercar, the ZR1, which is set to challenge anything Europe or Japan has to offer. Both cars will set you back around $100k. So which would you choose? Old school or new school?

For the record I will take the ZR1. For obvious reasns.

1) It’ll smoke the GT performance wise (hell the GT and the c6 Zo6 are nearly similar in terms of performance)
2) ZR1 is the better daily driver by far
3) the ZR1 has a similar level of stunning exterior style but for thousands of doillars less

To all those who say “we see cheaper vettes on the roads at every corner everyday”…well you also so see cheaper mustangs all over the place but they arent the in the same league as te Ford GT just like the regular vettes arent in the same price and performance category as the ZR1. With a bae price of $100,000 you will see about as many ZR1’s as you do Ford GTs. Both are exclusive special cars vERY FEW WILL BE ABLE TO AFFORD EITHER ONE

Nothing would make me happier then to have my hands on one of these bad boys.

My dream car is the 2008 Dodge Viper Hennessey Venom 650R, but between these two cars I would choose the Ford GT because of its oldschool looks and raw power.

ZR1 for comfort and reliability, not to mention CHEVY POWER!

GT-500 WTF!!! By the way since when is a ZR-1 not a collector car?

Brad
Jan 4, 2008 at 2:31 am

Both of these cars are great American pieces of work. Both have good looks, are great performers, and are both extravigent. I have to go with the ZR1, not just because i am a chevy fan, but because i believe the ZR1 is the better of the two as an all around preformer.

i would get the ZR1 hands down!!!………. all that power… but since i can’t afford it my 04 Alero will have to doo :D :D

Jan 4, 2008 at 1:00 am

I thought that was a gt-500 but why would anyone get a car (zr1) that look like exactly like the affordable z06 with a body kit when you can get a collector car that will be worth so much more.

Jan 4, 2008 at 12:27 am

i dont know man…i tell myself that the gt40 is sick..but for some reason the Vette just pops up in my mind…and its just an amazing machine…….so i have to go with the Vette for sure…its 100 times better…i mean look at it this way..the Vette will out live the Gt40…at least i think so…..but w-e…..Corvette Zr1 > GT40.

p.s..how many years have they built the Corvette?……answer = alot of years…lol

SofaKingWeTodDid
Jan 3, 2008 at 11:51 pm

i could see myself sitting in either one, but i would sooner take the Ford GT over the corvette. its not that the corvette isnt an impressive machine, its the style of the GT. it looks faster. haha the corvette, though there might not be any ZR1s where i live… there are ALOT of Z06s, and regular vettes… this one is the same shit, just in a different pile (Yes i know its got more power, better handling and all that) but its still a corvette… common. who here has driven a corvette? i have. i bet lots of you other people have too. whos driven a Ford GT? or even the older GT40? i bet no one here has… if you have. im jealous… plain and simple. to all those who own a corvette, theres another answer… doctors CAN make it bigger, same with you hummer 1 + 2 drivers. plain and simply put, there is no better brand when it comes to cars, its a matter of oppinion… you can tell me you know of a chevy that went a million miles, and a ford that died in 20… well i know of it too, i also know it goes both ways… it doesnt matter what you buy, its what you do with it after you buy it that counts. keep it clean, maintained… and make sure its maintained.

I respect your choice ian, but what’s so unmuscular and unAmerican about the GT? Just thought I’d ask. Both cars could be considered muscle cars and both could be supercars.

ian
Jan 3, 2008 at 11:09 pm

ZR1!!!! why? because amarican muscle leads the way!!

Jan 3, 2008 at 10:14 pm

ZR1!!! The GT40 looks like some futuristic jet plane and always did.
I agree…Chevy > Ford.
To argue with who ever said about a everyday car vs. a super car…If you drive a $100,000 Corvette as a daily driver:
1. Your obviously rich so none of us poor folks want your opinion…sorry, just stickn’ up for the little guys, don’t like it…to bad.
2. A Cavalier is a daily driver…hell…a 2004+ GTO is a daily driver…a $100,000 daily driver…What’s wrong with you? Buy another house or something that will last longer overall and or that MAKES MORE SENSE…again…rich=don’t give a shit.

There’s nothing I love more in this life than cars. BUT, I would never lay down $100,000 on ANY car. Nothing lasts forever and $100,000 for something your going to drive every day and not think twice about what you have…you need shot. I’d like to see any one drive a either one as a daily driver. It’s just not practical at all. Besides, what are you going to do with it other than drive the speed limit? You can play Need For Speed Most Wanted but your dumb ass WILL get arrested.

Get a life, stay in school, and don’t eat chocolate. Thank you.

Jeff
Jan 3, 2008 at 8:40 pm

I’m pretty sure you wont see a ZR-1 around alot, not to mention you get more bang for your buck, the way corvette has always been. If someone doesnt appreciate/respect the new ZR-1 when it comes out, they shouldn’t be involved with cars in the first place!

shitface
Jan 3, 2008 at 7:48 pm

GT40…fuck corvette theyre over rated, and besides u see corvettes everyday its no big deal, but GT40 u dont ..so 100,000 for an everyday car or 100,000 for a prestiege better looking supercar (if viper was in comaprison fuck both of em 2008 viper all the way)

Id probley go with the gt40 just for the fact Ive seen one in person and it was bad as. as long as it is the 69 type model I like them better than the 66 style. also as far as I know there acually not that hard to build up engine wise.

A vette is still a vette. You see those everyday…….but a GT-40…..that is one hell of a car and a head turner. Who the hell wants to spend a 100,000 on a car that doesn’t look that much different from a regular vette. With the GT-40, you get that exotic look and the speed and its still a six figure car. I would go with the GT-40 all the way.

Chris
Jan 3, 2008 at 5:59 am

GT40, by far. has more of a prestige about it….

i mean, if you want a fast vette, tune out a Z06 to be faster than a ZR1…..

The Ford GT. Jeremy Clarkson thought it was briliant enough to buy one. Besides, Corvettes can’t go around bends nearly as well controlled as the GT.

TEP
Jan 3, 2008 at 1:17 am

The Vette at least as a daily driver. But the GT40 is a retro cool weekend car that at the end of the day is well,…”cooler”.

Plus – so many BONERS drive Vettes these days which sucks because the car performs (for awhile anyways).

Ask yourself – Who do I know that owns a Vette? Answer: Some boner that lives down the street who tries to “buy” cool.

Ask yourself the same question about the GT40? Answer: I don’t know anybody who owns a GT40 but I saw one once and yeah,..those are pretty sweet rides. I’ll take one of those – heck even for resale value alone.

ZR1 the GT40 can barely roll with a Z06, same with Mustangs compared to Camaros. Plus the GT40’s look like crap.

Steve
Jan 2, 2008 at 10:42 pm

I would have to go with the GT-40, mainly because i have never been a chevy fan and i have actually seen many of the new GT’s in person and i have loved every one of them. And also everybody has got a corvette, it may not be a zr1 but they all look the same, and who wants to have the same ride as everyone else? You go to a carshow and not only are there numerous vettes at the show but also a number of the people attending own one to, i have only ever seen a GT on the streets one time.

Vette all the way, though as an owner, I’m biased.

Mike
Jan 2, 2008 at 10:31 pm

I’d have to go with a ZR-1 Vette. Although the GT40 is a piece of American Racing History, unless you have the time to uphold it and take it to race tracks, it’s going to be an uncomfortable ride on the road. The ZR-1 on the other hand, will have many more comfort option that make it enjoyable both on the road and at the track. Gotta go with the ZR-1.

A very hard choice. They’re two completely different monsters. Looks wise, the Vette definitely has my vote. But, the rarity of GT40’s also makes it appealing. Since I buy cars to drive them, I’d have to go with a Vette. The GT40 would make me want to keep it in the garage 360 days a year.

Randal
Jan 2, 2008 at 9:12 pm

The ZR1 hands down, I just like the fact that chevy left the roof raw carbon fiber and the splitters on the bottom raw carbon fiber, it just looks good. I am not really a ford fan any way.

I’m sorry but you can’t really put these two against each other, almost nobody has actually seen a GT40 in person, I’ve seen two, a black one that a guy had just gotten from the Ford Dealership it had 10 miles on it and a red one at an auction with my dad that was hit from the back, either way if you don’t see one of these in person you can’t know how beautiful they really are. I’m gonna have to say the GT40.

retroman
Jan 2, 2008 at 5:46 pm

Definitely a Ford GT. Both cars have great heritage, but the GT has an extra special story about it’s birth. Legend goes Henry Ford II was angry over losing the deal to buy Ferrari, so he told his engineers to build a car that would take the checkered flag at the 24 hrs of Le Mans the following year. So they did and the rest is history.

Ted
Jan 2, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Between a GT40 reproduction and a ZR1, I would choose the ZR1.
-
Always go for the geniune article, if you can.

Ted
Jan 2, 2008 at 5:36 pm

I would choose, as long as it’s authentic, the GT40. My reasoning is that the GT40 is only going to appreciate in value and be worth a very considerable amount of money more than it’s even worth now.
-
the ZR1 is a truly Awesome car, don’t get me wrong… but as investments go, right now at least it can’t hold a candle to the value of the GT40.
-
Sometimes worth takes precedence.
