Portable Nav Gets Biggie Sized!

For some people, one of the hurdles of going with a portable navigation system over an installed unit is the display size. Well, the guys at Garmin have taken care of that by introducing the Nuvi 5000, a portable navigation device which sports a large 5.2" display. Along with that, they’ve included an external signal display function, FM TMC traffic receiver capability, the ability to display MSN dynamic content and a sweet function which lets users input destinations directly from their home PC. And since today’s navigation devices can’t just be navigation devices, the Nuvi 5000 offers a few other trick features like an internal MP3 player, an audio book reader and built in games. I have the Garmin Nuvi 250, and I know for me, the 3.5″ screen is just a tad too small for my liking. I’d say this 5″ would be satisfactory. And it’s only a distraction if the driver lets it become one. I’m all for this upsizing!

I remember people putting down use of in-dash DVD players, but these GPS units are now more than GPS units and their screens are growing.
-
Assuming this model isn’t an in-dash unit, that would mean it’s taking up more of the most valuable real estate in any vehicle… the forward field of view.
-
How much bigger will they get? How many more functions (thus distractions, potentially) will they contain?
-
GPS units were fine the way they were, but in this case bigger isn’t better… it’s needless.
