NAIAS 2008: Hood Ornament

By Katherine

AKA atomicalex

I love hood ornaments, from the LaLique crystal craze of the art Deco Period to the menacing bulldog on the Mack Truck. They’re really called mascots, and two of the most famous are Packard’s "donut chaser" and Ettore Bugatti’s elephant. So I’m happy to report that our friends in Asia are hopping on the hood ornament band wagon, and I hope they can get their beauty through pedestrian safety testing. BYD Auto delighted me with this bit of chrome, found on their F8 coupe.

At least these days when automakers rip off another design, they use luxury cars as their starting point. Since when is it a bad thing to look like a Mercedes? I actually like the hood ornament on this car better than the Benz logo. If China can somehow start to compete in terms of quality and reliability, we may have a new luxury marque on our hands.

Headlights nothing – did a quick search for it and the entire front end is ripped right off a C class Benz.
Good old Chinese.

Why does this not surprise me that this cheap chinese crap looks somewhat like a Mercedes? Check the headlights. I know I’ve seen those elsewhere.
