NAIAS 2008: The Fisker Karma

By Jen

Don’t let that toothily grinning shark-mouth charm you: the Fisker Karma might have the roguish looks of a high-horsepower luxury sedan, but it in fact belongs to the tread-lightly school of super-attractive performance green cars that’re turning out in droves at Detroit this year. A center-mounted Li Ion battery pack supplies the Karma’s power until it reaches the end of its 50-mile range; then an efficient 4-cylinder kicks in to pick up the slack. Alternately, the electric and gas motors can be run in concert for peak performance. What kind of performance? Fisker’s promising 0-60 in just under 6, and a top speed of 125 mph. This 100-mpg beauty can be had for $80,000 to $100,000, and is purported to be availabe in 2009. More at Left Lane News.

Atomicalex… The Joker? WOW you are dead-on. I wonder if Jack Nicholson would buy one of these?

I welcome the trend here and with Tesla to create high dollar (~100k), high speed, high efficiency cars – if electric can be turned into a sort of halo status, that wouldn’t hurt anyone.

Atomic I was thinking the same thing. Batmobile meet Joker-mobile.

We over at neuwerks.com have decided it looks like the Joker.

The grin would take some therapy to get past. A scowl? A Sneer, maybe the look of being outright pissed off. Those are expressions on cars’ front ends I tend to gravitate to.

I like this car. The mention of a 4-cylinder gave pause but the cooperative power and initial 50 miles of electrical just might be a combination that proves to be much more efficient than present-day hybrids’ function.
-
It’s still as complex as today’s hybrids, but the price range is that of a car that would have higher maintenance costs anyway.

I think this car is really nice.
