Herbie’s Twisted American Cousin

By Sean

Editor

I stumbled across PonyKiller’s ride page after he joined the Dubb Life group, and when I saw what he’s working on, I almost fell out of my chair. He’s turning this once humble "peoples’ car" into a tube-chassis Pro Street monster—and he means business. Just check out the huge blower and gi-normous Mickey slicks stuffed into the rear! With all the trick bits he’s installed, Ponykiller estimates the car will put down an amazing 550hp! Yikes! I’ll be following this build pretty closely, and let you guys know when he gets a little further along.

very awesome indeed. i think the motor must be more for show than go. 550 horsies out of that much plumbing? 550 on a v-6 isn’t that rare anymore. But anyways, it looks awesome and would shurely be a wild ride!

I imagined it at least more than once..until the realization that it already had one of the worlds most incredible drivelines in the history if humanity…and let my imagination go back to the heathen it came from.Couldn’t he do that to a newer trnasverse beetle? that one desrves a hack from american hell.

I heard somewhere (from a drag racer I think) that the odd thing ’bout Beetles is they’re shape. They look exactly like an airplane wing and tend to come of the ground at a much lower speed than any other car would. I think when a bug hits 130mph, it starts to fly, really. My guess here is that he has ‘nough aerodynamic hindrance to keep that from happenin’.

Something tells me that hood isn’t going back on.

Let’s just hope he can keep those front wheels on the ground. I had a friend here in town that had a hopped up beetle with a Porsche engine under the bonnet and he could pick the front wheels off the front end.
I guess with the weight of that burly V8 keeping the front wheels down, shouldn’t be a problem.

Brad: Im gonna guess 550hp is plenty of power for a 68 BEETLE in his mind. Plus thats a homemade chasis, Im guessing he doesn’t want to twist that either.

he could get way more juice out of that motor. WAY more. first off he’s running carbs! you can get more power with an injected motor even if you were running dual quads. and the pulley on the blower is huge! throw a smaller pulley on there and you’ll get way more boost. throw a nice gear in the rear end with a turbo400 short tail and you’re good to go and have the tranny to handle it! very nice start though! motor looks great in there
