London: EV Drivers Can Park, Charge Up For Free!

The UK’s most car-hostile metropolis is cutting EV owners all kinds of breaks, Cars.com producer Martin Stocks discovered on a recent vacation. If you drive an EV, not only can you fill ‘er up at a convenient curbside charging station at no cost while you run errands—you’re also exempt from parking fees that can run up to 50 bucks a day, as well as the city’s $16-per-day "congestion charge" that petrol-burners have to shell out before even entering the city. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal!  Here in the US, consumers worry about how long it’ll take for a hybrid or EV’s gas savings to offset the vehicle’s substanially higher sticker price—if they got the plush treatment enjoyed by these UK greenies, the car would pay for itself in no time. Check it out at Kicking Tires.

Perks for EVs is a good idea. Everybody should be enthused about having more electric cars on the road because if there are enough, demand for gas will go down. If demand goes down, there will be less pollution and less market volatility.
-
If EVs really took off and started really eating into the amount of oil consumed (vehicles currently consume 3/5ths of all oil imported), the price of gas has nowhere to go but down.
-
it’s not like people will be forced to buy and drive ‘em. Those who will have nothing to do with them personally will always have IC cars to buy and drive, at least for the forseeable future, so there’s no reason for anyone to not want EVs to succeed… unless they’re rooting for the oil companies.
