Winter: It's Not All Bad

By Mike

AKA Mr. Angry

So winter’s here. It’s fierce, frozen and really friggin’ cold (14 degrees when I last checked). Generally winter is the kiss of death for car us guys, especially for those of us that live in the Northeast. We deal with freezing temperatures, salt on the roads and the ever present threat of rust in the wheel wells. From November until about March we wake up Sunday mornings ever eager to crank up the engine, roll down the windows and go for that first real blast of the season. A few weeks ago I’d had enough of waiting. Cabin fever had kicked in and I felt as though I would go native if I didn’t hear the roar of big block through three inch exhausts. It was cold, there was salt on the roads and I was sliding around like I was rolling through oil. But ya know what? If was f*ckin’ GLORIOUS! So I say WINTER BE DAMNED! Get out there and enjoy those rides you’ve all got stashed away for the winter. My car is meant put a smile on face and I’ll be DAMNED if I’m going to save it for the next guy to enjoy. (BTW, the car was thoroughly washed both above and below before being put away and now resides with a fresh coat of wax until my next psychotic episode.)

What are you thoughts on winter? Drop a comment and let us know what you think.

Here in minnesota winter is a 8 month ordeal and simply waiting it out is next to impossible. I make it a few months of opening the door between the house and garage, staring at the car. maybe clean something on it ,then go back inside and look at my car domain page of when life was a warmer, happier time. Then I brake down and say hell with it and let her rip. The car is older than I am, a lil road salt won’t hurt it as much as being caged up unable to roar and roam. Free the beast and give it a good cleaning afterward, whatelse is there to do in winter beside gain weight on the couch? Might as well polish some chrome or grease something. That’s my thoughts.

Drive that beast anywhere you want. Cars were made to be driven. Whats the point of spending all that time and money if you can’t enjoy it year round. My car is garage kept, but I drive it in the winter. It’s 22 years old and still in good shape. It’s not a matter of where you drive it, but what you do to protect it and how you clean it afterwards.

I say smoke them tires and powerslide them corners, cus its all we got left in these cars with gas prices and all!

I wholeheartedly agree with you Mike! I did the same thing when we had a bit of a deep freeze a while back. My Dodge Intrepid wouldn’t start (it was -10 degrees and new spark plugs now fixed that). My 1972 Plymouth Satellite Sebring fired right up. As much as I hated knowing there was car-eating brine on the road, and I was slower off the line than everything else, it brought a BIG smile to my face! Thanks for making me not feel so bad about it.

Hey, I got so damn sick adn tired of not having a hotrod to drive in the severe Omaha winters, I picked up a 46 chevy pickup mounted on a 78 Blazer 4X4 chassis. It has ‘glass fenders so no worries about rust in them. I installed a killer heat/defrost unit from my old 40 chevy coupe [it's a bolt-in!] and equipted the truck with electric wipers and fat traction tires…now I get to drive an old hotrod all year ’round..

I def’n feel you. I live in DC and between the snow, salt, pot holes and all around bad roads I don’t even bring my baby, a 01 540i, out and as she has a 6 speed manual with sport package it kills me. I switch gears to my Jeep which I purchased just for city life and mark the days till spring and open roads..

be easy

haha, well, wyoming didn’t use snow on their roads, so you kinda had to deal with the snow until it melted. at least they used sand i guess… never had a problem with the cars sliding around even in the weather, but i had some really good snow tires…

then again, i moved back to my other home, the phoenix valley, in (almost) always sunny arizona :)

But hey go for it. The charger can take it, there was nothin I like better that to go out in my grandfathers T-Bird and slide around on the back roads slinggin dirt and snow everywhere its awsome. Just take care of her K? -HLC
P.S. look for me in upcoming seasons of Bullrun I have been tryin to get on the show. I got an import though so you wouldn’t like it.

I tell you what…winters suck up in the Northeast, agreed. I lived in Maine and had to move down here in South Carolina where there isn’t salt on the roads, and no pot holes from the frost. They can do a number on your wheels.

I highly recommend making the move if possible;-)

I live in wisconsin, and i washed my car the other day, and next day it was all salty again… winter sucks…

not to mention ice pushed apart the connector on my 200$ streetglow multi-color led underglow kit.. and the connector was draging against the ground for about a week….totally f*ckd…and a new tube costs like 70$…

note to self, and others, tape your connections like no other

lets see…. yea… winter sucks. We had a high of 0 today in Chicago and of course that doesnt even include the wind chill. However, three weeks ago I had teh break of a lifetime…. 60 degree weather in January! Needless to say I had the windows down and was tearing up the streets that weekend, and I even had the chance to hit up the beach for some winter surf. Good times. But seriously now, this winter needs to end NOW.

P.s. That Goddamn groundhog had better get his ass out of his hole and stay out otherwise I am going in there after him with 50 pounds of trinitrotoluem >:-D

I drive my cars whenever I want, they get dirty, they get full of salt, but that is what car washes are for. Right now my wives car looks white, and it is a red car.

Yep, winter sux with cars but we gotta deal with it. I gotta wash my car every week just to get the salt off of it. It’s 0 degrees here today in Michigan and I’m with you Mr. Angry, I’m not gonna save my car for the next guy to enjoy cuz ya know, they won’t take care of it like we do.

Hey, welcome back man. you were the only reason i watched bullrun religously, and i think you should have won! anyways, i live in Minnesota, the land of the -60F windchills, and 6 months of winter. Last week i had a run in with one of our winter favorites, black ice. It resulted in my Jeep being totaled, hit a sign and rolled (they are not too forgiving when they are in frozen ground).

But i do have similair things, if i don’t take my fifty apart in the winter to do some mods or repairs, i ussually take it out once or twice. Its really wicked with no power steering or heat, just you rattling away in the elements trying to keep two-ton-tesse in control. God i love my hot rod!

Thanks for coming back man!

Welcome back Mr.Angry!
HAHA!I have a halarious story for u guys,

It was about last week when i was coming back from work,-7c and even colder with wind chill,it was forcasted a huge snow storm hittin the next day. The city’s dump trucks were out in full force,i dodged all of them except on mother F*ker,i kept ripping it from red light to red light and everytime i moved a little furthure the dump truck would try to catch up,there was cops following me and it was a nightmare, until i finnaly got out of my car and fingred the salt truck driver,i quickly hit the gas when the cops left and thank God! i didnt get sprayed by salt, came home and washed the car, just like everyday!

I applaud your momentary insanity :P Winter is too long to wait to play with any toy especially when you can actually SEE the pavement!! up here it’s either all snow or covered in sand so no winning for losing :S Only perk to winter is being able to drift around like a loony toon without the damage on the diff or tires :P (as long as you don’t get intimate with inanimate objects that is…)

Hate it. I live in upstate NY and the roads are not the greatest. Just the other day I got stuck behind a plow pushin the snow further off the side of the road and some how a piece of ice came out of the bank, made it under my front bumper, but took a nice piece out of my back bumper. Was no way to avoid that one ..

Wow, that must’ve been fun sliding that Charger around. I bet that car hasn’t seen salt in 20 years. The only good things about winter is the 4 wheelin’ and finding and empty parking lot to lose control in.

Winter Rots like roadkill in August.
-
The only reason why I’m still in the Northeast is because summer is HELL in the South and I’d be losing my favorite part of the year by sitting inside with the A/C on from April till October. West? Might as well be Czechoslovakia, I’m sure it’s got some nice scenery but it’s not home. Midwest? it’s the scenery between the oceans. Love it or hate it I gotta take the bad with the good in the N.E.
-
The worst it gets is when the temperature stays below freezing 24 hours a day. I remember once trying to wash a Cherokee at a U-wash it place at noon. It was below freezing for a week but that day was the warmest it was gonna be for a long time. Needless to say I had limited success drying the thing off, and even getting into it to leave. The locks were frozen.
-
The Winter’s harshness will make Spring all the more appreciated. I CAN’T WAIT now more than ever. Got new exhaust on my firebird and I’m really looking forward to hearing it run with the top down… something I haven’t been able to do with any other car I’ve owned.
-
maybe I won’t wait till spring. My heat works pretty good…

OH YEAH!!! Love the snow, man! I dont have a garage, so I wash my 98 Sierra every week. In Kansas, we have self-wash-style carwashes with warm water, but it still sucks to get your hands wet in 20 degree weather! Check out what I do with my truck when it snows!

I’ll drive the car around in the winter if there isn’t much snow on the roads. My driveway is long and goes uphill where it meets the road, so any snow or ice really makes it difficult to even make it out. It’s difficult to get around in the snow (with rwd) where I live because of all the hills and mountains, one of which I live atop of. Going down is easy, but coming back up is another problem :P

It’s cool that you’re blogging here now, Mike. I look forward to reading more from you in the future.

MIKE!!!!

IT’s awesome to see you back in the Limelight again. Happy New Year Man!

I know what you mean. Most of the Cardomain people know what it’s like to live in the Pacific Northwest as far as weather is concerned but, I agree weather be damned take your toys out and enjoy em.
You know your a car nut like me when, your out washing your car and the water begins to freeze on the car as your washing it. Thank goodness my truck was spending the night in the Garage otherwise it would have been a carsicle in the morning.

The Biggest Problem in the PNW is that we fight salt and Road Grime. So I try , though sometimes not successful, to get out and wash the beasts every week or every 2 weeks. Thank god for a garage to keep them warm..

Good to see yah Mike, Take it easy
