2009 F-150 vs. 2009 Ram: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Ford and Dodge unveiled new versions of their full size pickups at the Detroit Auto Show. They both look hot and come in a wide variety of sizes and flavors. So if you were looking for a new full-size truck, which would you choose? F-150 or Ram? (Thanks to Charlie for suggesting this match-up!)

F150 Ram

If you cant dodge it, RAM it!
Feb 22, 2009 at 6:00 pm

Here’s another comment I’d like to put out there. Why is Ford and Chevy going for around 310 on horsepower? Cmon, step up ur game. That’s not what a full-sized truck should be. It should be a durable, hard ass workin truck with loads of power. I know there are a lot of Toyota haters out there, and I’m not much for them either, but I like how they’re trying to stick with the Dodge with high power. This is what a full-sized truck should not be made of, not some wimpy shit that gets 21 mpg.

If you cant dodge it, RAM it!
Feb 22, 2009 at 5:48 pm

Alright, so obviously you all have opinions about these two. Me, I’d definantly go with the DODGE RAM, hands down. First of all, its more durable than the Ford. If you look around, there are usually much more old Dodges running on the road than Fords. And for you people saying the Dodge’s tranny will drop before 100K, that’s only rare. The only tranny I’ve had to replace in a Dodge was over 190K, much of those miles are hard-earned (towing heavy loads for extended periods, off-roading, etc). Our family is a die-hard Dodge community, and I can assure you, we have tested them. But I won’t try to be biased here. My brother is the exception, for he loves Fords. He has an 06 Ford F150, and I have an 05 Dodge Ram 1500. We strapped ours together (back to back) and both put the petal to the metal at the same time… guess who won? The Hemi. We also took them to a closed-down drag strip while our friend signaled the go. Lets say I practically owned him. Sure, the Fords might be better on a sheet of paper as far as towing and payload, but I can assure you the Dodge is much more capable than listed. Now I understand to some that the image of the truck is important. I do to a certain extent. The new looks may be different than ever before, so take a while to let these styles sink in. I think the Ford looks quite classy (in a bad way) and out of shape. The Dodge looks a bit like its older models, but still different. I personally like the look of the Dodge much much better than the Ford. Also, what the fuck is up with the new “man steps” on the Ford? They must be for pussies. I think a Rambox would be more of use for people that actually use trucks, unlike pussies in the cities. And by the way, The Dodge puts out 390, not 380, but that’s not a big deal when its already above Ford. The only plus I see on the Ford’s side is 1 mpg better than Dodge (but once again, the Dodge puts out more power.) Haha, and for you Charlie, I agree that the Dodge should be put in the Bullrun. I now have over 140K miles with no problems. I plan to put a 4″ lift on mine w/ 35″ tires and new rims to do more hardcore mudding with friends.

Neither brand of truck really did anything for me until now. I like the new Ford F150 this year. The interior is really sharp and I like what they have done with front clip. Although I would like to see more crome on the FX4 series. Lots of power pumping out of the 5.4 Litre 310 hp, no where near the almost 400 hp the hemi pushes. This will change in 2010 when the Ford SVT Raptor is available to the public…. Can’t wait.

I’d have to say…. in this comparison I’d go with the dodge definitely. I’ve owned several dodge trucks over the years and they never disappoint. I grew up in Ford country in Illinois, but switched to dodge because of performance problems. I do a lot of hauling and whether its a Ram with a Cummins engine or just a plain ol’ 1500, they’ve easily gone 400k for me. My only transmission problem was in my ‘90 dakota when I had to replace the transmission after 75k. Dodge’s new lifetime warrantee on powertrain just shows how strong they’re built. I admit I did buy an F-250 in 2005, but after about 60k I got rid of it. Too many problems. Ford CAN make a great truck, but that’s only about 1/3 of the trucks they put out. The other 2/3’s turn out to be lemons.

1 Dodge
2 Chevy/GMC
3 Ford
4 Nissan & Toyota…..screw them.

Well to me I think that ford has really gone backward with this new styling, Personally I don’t think they will ever make a better looking truck than the 04-08 model, its lines are smooth and flowing, but also manly & strong. I think the new f-150 looks frankly “shocking” its so ugly compared to the last one, the grill is too big, tail lights & tail gate suck & the front head lights look stupid & square like something from the 1980’s. However I also think the ram looks pretty terrible too. I’m keeping my 06 fx4 as I think its better than both the new ram & f-150

DODGE RAM…. Rams are built to work, just look out on the highways they are the only trucks hauling huge trailers loaded!! I have had 5 rams already and put over 100,000 miles on them giving the ram hell off-road and pulling trailers with tractors and payloads exceeding the payload limits and still no problems. If you treat a Ford,Chevy,GMC,Toyota, and Titan like that you break them.

I am a die hard ford fan, but to me it seems that all the new trucks are going down hill with their looks. the headlights on the ford just don’t flow and the front grill is too big, the tailgate is pretty ugly too. they need to simplify their looks, they need to get back to their roots and make a truck thats only purpose is to work with, one that your not scared to dent or scratch or work hard on a farm. now their just aiming at the city slickers that just want to show off their shiney new truck. and the dodge is just girly looking, my grandma wouldn’t drive something ike that because its too girly, you’d get laughed off the job site.

I like all of the new trucks in some way or another but i`m sticking with Ford which i`ve always had.I bought a gorgeous {woodland green}99` Super Duty new that had an engine knock after 400 miles but Ford replaced the motor under warranty.Never any other stupid problems though like you here about with other trucks. Also,Fords interiors are superior and the switches and buttons are just better. I`m guilty of liking all the new trucks including the Tundra even with all it`s problems{it`s powerful and fast but that ain`t enough for me}and the new GMC`s are sweet too but Ford still has an edge in my opinion. My current 04` Ranger Edge supercab 4×4 has 80,000 miles on it with zero problems plus a killer factory black paint job and sound system and it loves to be driven hard. This little Ranger rides rough i`ll admit but it doesn`t have a fucking rattle in it! Ford is built well you fuckers,haHA!

ford truck is the best selling & performing truck in the world for the last 31 years straight. Dodge has more horsepower but not until you reach 5500 rpms, where ford reaches its peak horse power at only 3500 rpm. What idiot drives their truck at 5500 rpm while driving or towing, at 3500, the dodge has 285, not 300 like ford. Ask anyone who really uses their truck for anything other than a Penis Extention buys a ford, where dodge buyers buy trucks that bost big numbers but preform like their small penis s do.

Rue
Feb 7, 2008 at 2:21 am

DODGE RAM!!! The F150 really can’t compete with its little engine and cheap styling. Th new HEMI has 380 HORSEPOWER @ 404 lbs!!! Dodges are way more reliable than Fords and Chevys. A Ram will last 400K easily. Fords just want to be like Dodge.

Dodges will always be #1, then Chevy, then Ford, and Toyota and Nissan trucks suck.

Jan 28, 2008 at 3:23 pm

You guys ever checked real information on different trucks? It’s funny…all you toyota lovers out there. Whens the last time you say a Toyota more than 5 or 6 years old that wasn’t completely rusted through? Check consumer reports or something, Toyota trucks are have 67% more repairs than your average truck. Average being an AMERICAN truck.

Mmm…and doesn’t this Dodge just happen to look like a bit of an oversized version of the old F-150? The late 90’s and early 00’s F-150’s had similar fenders/flares and looked pretty much the same as these new Dodges. Except Dodges are massive, horrible on gas, and drop transmissions after what…60,000 miles?

first off i dont think very many cars catch the eye when they first come out….like whe dodge totally changed there front end in 2002 i was like eeww…that chit is ugly…but now i think its hott!!

and ford same thing after they changed the curvy body into a box*y one i was like f*** the curvy was way better….same thing i like the body style now…

sooo….not picking one untill i first see one in person and second get used to the new body styles…lol

just my opinion….

I would take the Ram! It looks a bit cleaner around the front. The headlights are easier on the eyes and there seem to be less changes from the previous body style. However I am a GM guy, so I’d take a Silverado or Sierra. The new Tundra’s look better than the Ram and F150 as well. Does anyone even care about Titan’s anymore, lol?

Having owned, raced, competed in and against both I would have to say the Dodge. It looks great. The Old F150 looked better that the new, but I will not own a Ford ever again. Of all the vehicles I have owned(37) the Dodges were totally reliable and even after 500K on the clock they just keep going. All of my Fords and Fords that I have know are maintenance heavy, or broken. The Lifetime warrenty Dodge has on the drivetrain shows that they are willing to stand behind thier product and they have confidence that their drivetrains are built tough and to last. I don’t see anyone else stepping up to the plate to back thier product like that.

The F150 looks classy, the Dodge looks sporty, but the new Chevy’s/Gmc’s continue to carry the torch forward looking and being the toughest light duty and heavy duty trucks on the road. GM trucks for life baby!

Jon

Wow wee! I currently own a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4×4 Quad Cab Hemi Sport Edition and I wasn’t prepared for the 2009s (the year I was planning on trading in) to have a simular front face to a late model Ford Mustang Coupe. As for the Ford….N/C, I don’t drive Fords due to some mechanical problems I had in the past with a 1988 Bronco and a 1990 F250. The F150 body style still doesn’t appeal to me anyway. I think I will go for the new Toyota Tundra or keep what I got now.

I’d go with the Dodge, not only because I’m a Mopar guy but because it has such great features. The interior is a HUGE improvement, it definitely rivals recent Ford truck interiors. Also the Hemi is getting variable cam timing and variable intake runner length to be released with the ‘09 Ram; it’s now rated at 380 HP and 404 lb-ft in the same 5.7L size. Not to mention a bit better mileage too. The new Ram also has a totally new offset coil-over rear suspension that should blow the competition out of the water as far as ride and payload are concerned. Another thing, for 2010 the 1/2-ton Ram is also getting a smaller V8 Cummins with around 260 HP and 460 lb-ft, and within the next couple years we’ll be seeing an automatically-shifted 6-speed manual. All I have to say is, the competition had better be ready.

Ford made the grille area bigger like the Dodge Ram also the head light assembly not much difference. I think Ford liked what the Dodge Ram had to offer and well based their design on it. Look at the two pictures very carefully I can see why Ford tried to copy the Dodge Ram. This is just my opion just something I noticed.

Well im a little biased in this being a ford guy and working for ford, but im definately digging the new F150 being that its a full re-design not just warmed over old look. Plus in 2010 ford is releasing a hemi fighter and a diesel. Get used to ford controling the truck market.

Well I have mostly been a Chevy fan but I really don’t care for the look of there new trucks. Between these two however, I think I would go with the Dodge. Never been much of a Ford fan and I still don’t really care for the look of the new ones. But that Dodge does look pretty good. I must say, even though it wasn’t asked, I prefer the look and performance of the new Tundra, after they get the kinks worked out.

haha.. maybe nick owns a corolla because he obviously doesnt own a truck.. I own and sell them.. the two worst choices would be the new tundra with the 5.7 junk engine and the titan that will cook rear ends every 20k. Both the new ford and dodge are nice as well as the gm makes.. Depends on personal preference.. Both of them have proven reliable in the last 5 years.. that 5.7 iforce and the truck itself has more problems than a yugo. Rear end leak, camshaft issues, pulley alignment, serpentine belt shredding, transmission misshifting.. ill leave it at that..

The Ram, the front end looks bad ass. The F-150’s front end is just ugly. Quality wise, I’d lean towards the Ford, but Dodge isn’t bad. My dad’s got a new Tundra and would have rather kept the Ram. He love’s it though. The Tundra has all Toyota’s “active safety control” crap that takes away from the driving experience. His old Ram was more fun to drive, I think.

No doubt the Ford will outsell every other pickup for what is it… 29 yrs in a row, but that doesn’t mean it’s the better looking. I love the Ford, but that front facsia on the Dodge and its raised hood over the fenders just make it look mean. I hope they never take that away.

I vote for the Ram. I’ve always loved them, and they are decent trucks. I like the Ram’s styling, it has a nice muscular look. However, I could really do with out that storage compartment on the side of the bed of the Laramie. I preferred the old Ford’s styling, the new one looks quite subdued and boring.

They both look like they were developed for rich people, no offense, neither look like a truck, yet alone, one to be used for what a truck is SUPPOSE to be used for. I kinda prefer the imports right now.
My answer, neither.

I’ld have to take the ford due to the fact that I own a 2004 FX4 Supercab and they did a good job, but it’s still not as good as the 2004 to 2008 the design was so mauch better for those FORD all the way.

I agree with Vero. The Silverado’s and Sierras are the best, but if I had to pick one it would be the Dodge.

They both will get the job done, but ford’s styling is much more sexy that dodge.

I’m thinkin the 150 will last a little longer than the dodge before something goes wrong.

Vero
Jan 24, 2008 at 1:59 am

rob

eric
Jan 24, 2008 at 12:40 am

I would say the ford cause if you watch ATL the movie, the ford 150 looks better on 28″’s

Harrison
Jan 24, 2008 at 12:38 am

I like the Ford because the Dodge looks like a Toyota, and the Ford is so much better, Dodge Trucks never really looked good to me anyway.

Ford for sure!

Steve
Jan 23, 2008 at 11:39 pm

In terms of 07’s and 08’s, i think the ford is definitely a better truck, and the front end on those things are awesome, but honestly i dont like the ford front end in that pic, so i’m gonna have to say i’m for Dodge on this one

Jason
Jan 23, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Definitely the dodge. Ford looks like a new chevy with that square front end and big head lights also looks kinda like the grill off of a Dodge Nitro. Thats just me though.

dodge!

Dodge for sure!

Anonymous
Jan 23, 2008 at 11:15 pm

neither!!! the dodge looks like if it hit something and all it did was dent in, and the ford looks like the designers were bored and just wanted to get it over with so they stuck the f-250 front clip on it. COME ON!!!

cknarf
Jan 23, 2008 at 10:56 pm

the ford is extremely ugly, i miss the 1988 f-150….

Bobby
Jan 23, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Its hard, but I think I have to go with Dodge on this one. As much as I like that black F-150, it looks a little too classy, like the Mark LT, a truck should be that, a truck, and I think the Ram pulls that off very nicely; stylish but still tough at the same time.

Ernie
Jan 23, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Ive had Fords before, but that Dodge design looks better than the Ford one.

Nick
Jan 23, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I would have to go with the F-150, it’s the best selling truck for a reason.

Charlie
Jan 23, 2008 at 10:34 pm

Hey yall used my idea, sweet, do i get a T-shirt or something lol jk, yall did give me one when i won one of the bullrun contest. But I gotta say Ram cause I’m a MOPAR or NO CAR guy lol.

Christopher Campbell

DODGE, a good’ol boys truck!

Evan
Jan 23, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Ummmm I’ll say neither. However, if I had to it would be the F-150 promptly followed with a for sale sign on it.

Anonymous

F-150. The Dodge isn’t as thorough a redesign and I hate the tupper ware interiors that Dodge has been doing lately. Plus the Ford has more power now and great looks.

Ray
Jan 23, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Not a hard decision, the Ram. The fords front clip just looks ugly.
