Stutz Diplomatica on eBay

By John

The original Stutz Auto Company was founded in 1911. Early cars were innovative, and had success at both Indy and Lemans. When the marque was resurrected in the late sixties, it was rebranded as a boutique builder for the rich and famous—and that’s when things started to go sideways. While interior appointments were lavish—featuring brass, gold, Connolly leather—the exteriors were apparently constructed without any kind of plan. All the modern cars used Cadillac platforms, and the results make you wonder how the General allowed any of their creations fall into the hands of people who’d so systematically defile them. Just look at the Diplomatica below! If you can find any area of the car which doesn’t look criminally ill-proportioned, you’re doing a lot better than I am. Yuck. I’ll admit, this car does have a pretty interesting history—one of seven, only one not sent to Saudi Arabia—I just think it’s horrible. What do you think? Am I wrong?

better avoid driveway aprons and sudden changes in slope with that thing.

The front and rear overhangs are of legendary proportion. Gotta be 5 or 6 feet in the back. You only find that on Class A motorhomes.
-
Stretched in all the wrong ways.

Wow. This is hideous!

First, it looks like someone took the normal grill and headlights off an LTD Crown Victoria(or some other large eighties sedan), and inserted those horrid replacements. And whats with that fake spare tire on the trunk lid? The last time I saw one of those, it was on a 1960 Chrysler 300. Those chrome side-bumper things on the bottom of the doors are hideous. I know I already talked about the grille and headlights, but those things are just horrible!

Even considering how bad it is, great find! I never knew a car like this ever existed, and it was a lot of fun to see. Thanks for posting it!

John.
You are right.
It is pretty horrible.
.
The ebay link isn’t working, or the auction is no longer there…
.
It looks like someone won a contest awarding them every free bolt-on accessory from the JC Whitney catalog, and they ordered one of everything for this car ;)
.
Nice find!
