The Van: Creepy or Just Plain Cool?

By Mike

AKA Mr. Angry

I am a big fan of vans. I’m not talking about the modern minivans of today, but the great vans of yesteryear. Mainly those of the late 60s and early 70s. Vans in general fall into one of two categories: creepy or cool. My wife seems to think that all vans, regardless of the year, make or model are just plain creepy. I disagree–I think that vans have gotten a bum rap over the years. When many people see an old van they conjure up visions of teenagers in the back, fully ablaze on illegal substances. Others see them as solely purpose built vehicles–load em’, lug it and unload em’, end of story. I just love them and think they’re just plain cool. Just take a look at Julie’s Dodge A100. Simply put, this thing is COOL. What do you think?

Yeah, impromtu tailgate party is exactly what I am going for in the ’67 Dodge 8-door. Pull into the party and open up all the doors and blast the awesome stereo system (not yet installed!) but Pieces of Eight is gonna be a party girl, just like her momma!!! J

I’ve never ridden in a cab-forward passenger van, but it’s no different than a cab-forward moving van. I think it would just take a little getting used to, like riding a motorbike. If I had a van like that, I wouldn’t drive too fast… I’d roll by real slow so everyone could see my cool van!

When I was a kid, vans like the one pictured maybe seemed a little creepy, but my impression way back then was that I wouldn’t want to be in an accident in the front seat of one of those things.

I liked vans…not that much. I did some work with telecom and a chevy astro was assigned, and liked it. A small v8, and even awd and I would have loved it. No sense of creepy with that one. Same traits as old and bigger but smaller and did well in the wind with the 14 inch wheels and hubcaps (very unlike the older). oh well. the crapo 4.3 liter changed my mind forever, the inline four version was more appealing..and that sucked (not enough power).almost had a van for my likes..

Mike, your totally right… these earlies are cool, and have such character compared to newer vans. Creepy? Hell, no! All vans of all years can just handle things that cars and pickups aren’t as well suited for. How many times do you need to haul something that you just don’t want to use a pickup for? Or what if you want to throw an impromptu tailgate party before the big game (gl Giants and Pats fans)? Or what if you want the ultimate in travel comfort?

And then there are some incredible vanners I’ve met here that remove the creepy factor altogether!

Mike, get a Dodge early for your next project, hook up with a van council (many in NY), and have a great time! The Vanners Group will help you inspire a dream ride for “Mrs. VANgry”!!!

Old vans are definitely cool. Stripped down and souped up, they can pull reasonable 1/4 mile times, but what I love to see is the goodies like flame throwing exhausts(stacks, side exit, out the back, whatever floats the owner’s boat), train horns and ones that play music and sfx, bullhorns, cbs, neons, strobes and lights, swiveling captains seats, sick paint jobs, stereo systems, tv’s, furniture, appliances, and even the kitchen sink. It’s like the ultimate road trip vehicle, a home away from home. Just try cramming all that into a car. Van’s are cool in a different way. Hey, I’ve even seen some built for off roading.
