What’s Your Favorite Rental Car?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

I was down in the SF Bay Area this weekend visiting friends and family. I flew into the Oakland airport and picked up a red Pontiac G6 rental that smelled like the inside of a bong. Anyway, nice car! Much tighter than some of the Grand Ams I’ve had in the past, and quite fun to drive. I’ve been pretty happy with the rentals I’ve been getting lately. The last one, a VW Jetta, impressed the hell out of me. But I think my favorite rental car right now is the Dodge Charger. It’s especially great if you have kids–the trunk can take all the strollers and other kid crap you can throw at it, and the back seat is massive. What’s your favorite rental car?

While working for Sirius, the guys at the SeaTac Hertz would always upgrade me from a compact to an Infiniti G35… Quite an upgrade from a Focus and it made rolling around strange cities a much more pleasurable experience.

But the best time I’ve had in a rental was when I traveled to Idaho and rented a Subaru Outback. There was a small off-road park right near my hotel in Pocatello, ID, so I rallied the thing one evening after finishing work. No better race car than a rental!

almost any car without a speed governor. for some reason, i always find myself on an open road in the middle of no where in a rental and always try to see where the governor is set at. that being said, i loved my recent rental of the new 08 highlander, it has a 5spd auto which makes for a nice cruising speed of 80-85 at just under 3000 rpm. drove it from So-Cal to Zona, nice ride, very quiet.

our taurus wasnt there when we got to the rental place so we got a Magnum R/T… i was only 20 so only my mom was allowed to be insured on it, but i took it out for a quick drive to the store and it was pretty nice

I had a 2006 Toyota Camry for a rental when my parents Caravan got wrecked. It was awesome, damn fast for a 4cyl, 200kms +!!
Very very nice car for sure!

Considering I’m still too young to rent a car, I really don’t know. Dodge Charger’s definitely a practical choice, plus you can get it with a massive hemi. I wouldn’t mind racing…er…driving a Shelby Hertz GT-H either though.

The Chevy Cobalt Coupe. Hands down. It’s the new neon.
