Top 10 Future Collector Cars?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
The folks at Hagerty just released their list of the Top 10 Future Collector Cars. This is a bit different than the list they threw together last year in that, for the most part, these are higher end cars, and there is more attention paid to specific trim levels.
Cadillac XLR-V Roadster
Lotus Exige S
Audi S5
Mustang Shelby GT 500 KR
Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Smart
Subaru Impreza WRX STi
Honda S2000 CR
Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky
Dodge Charger Super Bee
I think it’s a decent list, but I would have put the Viper ACR and R32 on there and probably left off the Audi (will their electronics make it 25 years?) and WRX STI (considered fugly by just about everyone). I also think the Solstice/Sky would have to to be the GXP/Red Line editions. You can read the full press release after the jump. What do you think of the list?

Are you Driving Tomorrow’s Collector Car?
Hagerty Insurance Announces its Hagerty Hot List: Top 10 Future Collector Cars
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ — In January hundreds of thousands of car enthusiasts flock to the Scottsdale/Phoenix area to put in the ultimate bid for some of the rarest and most beautiful cars in the world. They are paying homage to this internationally attended event which yields world records for high sales in almost every collectible vehicle category. The high sale this year went to a 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWBCalifornia Spyder for $3.3 million. Hagerty Insurance has announced its picks for the Hagerty Hot List: Top 10 Future Collector Cars. The list was created to advise consumers what hot cars of today will remain desirable in the next 20 years. With Hagerty’s Hot List, you just might already have that future collectible sitting in your garage. All you have to do is wait…
Could you have tomorrow’s hottest collectible sitting in your garage? To help consumers answer that question, McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance Agency and a respected collector car valuation expert, has compiled his choices for Hagerty’s Hot List which includes picks from today’s current cars on the road.
"Many consumers could be driving a future collector car right now," says Hagerty. "Our goal was to find cars that are currently on the road but may be considered nostalgic in 15 to 20 years. Each car on Hagerty’s Hot List possesses a ‘buzz,’ a Wow Factor that resonates with consumers of all ages, many cars being daily drivers that turn heads already."
In determining the Hagerty Hot List, Hagerty analyzed the reasons today’s collector cars are such hot commodities: pop-culture popularity, limited production numbers and the style of the next generation of collectors. The company included a wide range of models that span market segments and price ranges: cars that are more affordable, fun to drive and still enticing for future generations.
Hagerty’s Hot List:
– Cadillac XLR-V Roadster
– Lotus Exige S
– Audi S5
– Mustang Shelby GT 500 KR
– Chevrolet Corvette Z06
– Smart
– Subaru Impreza WRX STi
– Honda S2000 CR
– Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky
– Dodge Charger Super Bee
"In a time when all the major manufacturers are fiercely competing for market share, we wanted to pick some modern day driving machines that grab drivers’ attention now and will continue to do so down the road," says Hagerty. "The cars on this list have all the right ingredients to be looked upon by the next generation of enthusiasts as cool cars to collect."
Hagerty is the leading insurance agency for collector vehicles and boats in the nation and host to the largest network of collector car owners. Hagerty offers collector car insurance, financing and roadside assistance, as well as a variety of useful information resources. The company works proactively on hobby legislation and supports the Collectors Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preservation of the hobby. That list is a joke! Rare doesn’t equate desireable; more often than not rare simply means nobody wants the damn thing, now or in 25 years. People still have the hots for early Mustangs and Camaros, almost any old Corvette, and ‘55-57 Chevys. They were lusted after new and have never gone out of style. The XLR is nothing but a tarted up, heavy and ugly C6 Corvette with a less powerful engine; the “V” gives it enough extra horsepower to run with a standard C6 – for twice the price. Who craes!Ditch the S5 and if you want German put the R8 or a Porsche GT3 on the list. The smart? Gimme a break. It’s a breakthrough car for the US but will longterm be more of a curiousity than a collectible. The new WRX STI is better car mechanically than its predecessor, but it lost all the attitude and appeal with the new skin. You gotta be smokin’ crack to put the Honda 2000 CR on a top 10 collectibles list – damn nice car but too commonplace and not a great street car cuz the engine has no low end or mid range torque. The Solstice/Sky sisters have no place on the list; the latest Miata (or whatever alpha-numeric Mazda calls it now) is a way better car. And the Charger, well if you give collectible votes to the car that looks like it came out second best in a head-on collision with the ugly tree, then and only then does it belong It’s a good performer but only a few nutcases collect “ugliest-cars-of-the-year.” The new Challenger SRT8 belongs on the list. So does some variation of the Ferari F430, the new Camaro SS (when it comes out later this year or early next and, of course, the current Viper.

I don’t have any particular hard-on with this list, but as a old man I can tell you with CERTAINTY that the last three or four years of Chevy Monte Carlo’s will be VERY collectable. They will replace the 57 chevy. (you read it here first)

I would think the Dodge Viper and Plymouth/Chrylser Prowler should be on the list.

I think the list is right-on with the XLR at the top.
Another soon-to-be is the ‘81 Eldorado with the V8-6-4 engine…Cadillac’s blackest eye in it history.
I’m about to sell one of those, myself. See it here….

So how you are gonna tell me that the Audi S5 is a better choice then the R8, or the Pontiac Solstice is better than the porsche GT2, Ferrari Enzo, or my personal favorite the Noble M12 GTO, this list is comical and looks like they placed all the car choices in a bingo hopper and chose them randomly. I haven’t even brought up the new Skyline, Aston Martin, or Bugatti

The Solstice is cool, but NOTHING with a Saturn label will ever be a collector car.

im not a huge fan of the smart car but i guess it can be a colector later on in life
i would take off the audi first of all because even though its a good car, it wont last 30 years. id put the evo on that list, and even wrx is an insane car its just that i dont think it will be a “collector”

The list is crap! I only agree w/the ZO6, the super bee and the KR but new STi. the new STi looks like something that my dog chewed on. what ever happened to the good looking body lines of the 22b or the previous generation? Wheres the New Nissan GTR? where is the F430? the least likely to be a classic is the Smart. the only car that is like the smart that is a real car is something like the Suzuki Swift. I only have one question what where those people on when they made this list? I mean come ON!

Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky are you f***n kidding me those cars are scrap metal for my future toaster. As for the other 9 as much as I dislike American cars the corvette and stang should be on their it`s the reason why Chevy and Ford are still in business lucky “Muscle“ cars selling. As for the best car in the world that people can`t realize is the best made car next to a Ferrari is the Subaru Impreza WRX STi. Has anybody made a $40k car that you drive off the lot and race on the track bone stock unless you want your luxury cars out their. Only time will tell.

STI will be a collector now that the new ones are out and not everyone likes the look of them. People are going to resort to the older ones now. The regular XLR should already be a collector because they are the perfect Cadillac!!!

It is too easy to list the high performance, limited run cars like the ZR1 and the slew of GT500s. I really like the 02-05 Thunderbirds as well. Have to remind everyone that the Nissan GT-R is out now too.

You think the new STI is a good looking car? I’ve seen pics and seen them up close and, well… I haven’t heard anyone from mainstream press to Subie guys rave about the looks (or performance) of the new STI. So I think the chances of it becoming very sought after at some point in the future to be pretty slim. It’s definitely not the next Hemi ‘Cuda.

Hagerty can talk all they want. I spose they’re speculating new cars only. I can see some of their picks, and definitely see why they chose the new Shelby GT500KR and the Solstice, but what about the older cars that you can get a dime a dozen like the Chrysler Shelbys and other early pocket rockets and current misfits. I like misfits cause they’re rare and have some speculative potential. The Superbird for instance was not all that pretty or popular when new, now look at it. Oh well, I can whine that my Spirit R/T didn’t make the list, but that’s ok, it was in Hemmings last year as a top pick for collect ability.

Uuuummmm as far as collectors cars I think you have to take a few things into consideration first. Such as…. car collectors nowadays can still drive their cars around, but who knows if we will even have cars operating on gasoline. Sure we still have enough crude oil to produce gas for the next 100 to 150 years but that doesnt mean the US wouldnt make a switchover to some other form of combustion. Another thing to think about is if we do make a big “switch” to some other form of combustion I could see the US legislation making driving classic cars illegal.
Think about it.

The subaru diesel, being the first boxer with it probably ought to be there. Kids and L imprezas swapping thier 1.8EJ for a 2.0 and an ebay turbo..is not quite going to be as easy as the diesel with similar hack jobs..especially playing with diesel stoich and 50mpg. I suppose this is an old list. I can’t wait to see the hacks on the diesel. …5 hp there is like 5hp on thier old 3 main gas..you don’t shrug it off. Speaking of 3 main boxers and collector lists never written…

Often times I find myself at odds with the opinions on this blog. But the fact that you think that the R32 is awesome. I’m in love with that car; I’m working up the courage to steal one off the local lot. Kidding, of course. Maybe.
However, I’m also a big fan of the S5 and STI (which I think is pretty hot). I’m not sure that the STI is a future collector’s car though. If I were to remove something from that list, I think it would be the Smart. I just don’t see how that would be a collector’s car. It’s relatively unique but it’s really not an object of desire as I feel a collector’s car should be.
