Buy New or Custom Built?

By Mike

AKA Mr. Angry

I was having a discussion with my friend Larry, who just happens to be the owner of the New York Motor Club, about possible choices for a new car purchase. He wants something cool, fast and outrageously fun–not for a daily driver, but a semi-daily cool-as-nuts ride. We talked about cars ranging from the BMW M5 to the Lamborghini Gallardo, but he couldn’t really think of anything that got him too excited. Then I suggested, "What if you had something built?"

This opened up a whole new world of possibilities–and questions. "Will it be reliable, can it be made to go, stop and handle like a modern car, will be fast?" "Well, yes, yes, yes and yes," was my response. I mean think about it–for the price of a high end strudel wagon or pasta rocket you could build a car to your specifications, with all the bells and whistles you want, that will go like hell and look better than any of the new offerings. Plus, not only will it have modern-day reliability, but you’ll feel like a rock star driving it, and in the end isn’t that what it’s all about?

Larry hasn’t made any decisions yet, but it definitely got him thinking. So what do you guys think: would you buy or build? You already know where I stand.

Look better than a Gallardo? I beg your pardon?

Pansy bodied Camaro?

Come on man. The 70.5 Camaro is a classic. Maybe not as classic as the 67-69, but I think there’s more character to the 70.5 than any other.

That thing’s a hot car.

Build a 70.5 Camaro. With all the aftermarket out there for it, and the budget your friend has, you could make one so much better than a new car.

let’s see…LS7, T56, DSE front subframe, nice aftermarket 4 link, nice big Baer brakes,

Killer…unique, and even fuel efficient.

of course it is a build it versus just brand new. ridiculous to ask. I would keep that pansy bodied camaro a 305 in the photo however. Better off putting a big v8 in a honda civic.

I’d go custom, because by the time you have bought a new car and all of the options which are hella expensive youd probably have enough to make a wicked custom car.

Buy the NEW BMW M5 And then tune it from there, Im sure he will find that he now owns the best car ever.

New gives you gas milage, old custom gives you personality. I couldnt make this decision so I got both.
