Hybrid Muscle Cars??
By David
aka Highspeedhijinks
It was almost inevitable after the new CAFE 35 regulations were released: GM is now considering alternate powerplants for the new Camaro. Don’t worry, the high-horse SS version V8 will still be available. However, there are some alternatives under consideration, like a turbocharged V6 or even dual-mode hybrid V8, like the one in the Tahoe. The really sad thing is that GM also has been reported saying that it’ll drop all rear wheel drive projects (Impala, Lacrosse, G8 replacement) and the new DOHC V8 that Cadillac was scheduled to get in 2009. I don’t know if this signifies and end to an era that never really got started, or if it means that we’re all going to have to blur our definition of what makes a muscle car. What do you think: can a hybrid Camaro be considered a muscle car?

here’s the deal
base v6= Muscle car look but its not for speed. So to keep it alive and make it a hybrid, electic or what ever tech/gas saving idea that works.—->> BUT it will have to be in the 15 second area in a quarter. So its not too slow to get out of its own way
z28 and ss= ONLY V8………………….

I think a hybrid muscle car is possible and likely just think an i.c. engine has to get up r.p.m’s to reach it’s peak horsepower electric motors don’t so if you take off with a 300hp electric motor you are leaving the line with 300hp not a fraction of that like an i.c. and gas milage probably won’t improve that much just more power

hybred muscle? NO!!!
let me explain, a muscle car is that it is a car with muscle.
the capabilities of a hybred are not high. can you take one out to the strip on saturday? no. what do you think of when you hear muscle? you think of an easy to modify carburated engine that you can feel through the ground 25 feet away. you dont want a car you can get into and strip the starter out because you cant hear it run. also if you wanted to modify the car, how could you modify? fight through about 200 wires pull the plastic off the little motor and hope you guess right and get the motor and not an alternater or a sensor of some sort. honestly people fuel injection is hard enough to work with.

This is my favorite Camaro. I’ve always been a Firebird man, but if they don’t make another Firebird (they FREAKING BETTER) I’ll get one of these eventually.

I just hope they don’t change em over to hybrids, cause people will be scrambling for the REAL muscle cars that were made before the Hybrid scourge attacked the venerable institution of American Muscle Cars… and won.

When will people realize that the word “hybrid” is not necessary synonymous with “quiet”, “weak”, & “slow”? Neither is “muscle car” with “gas guzzler”. If you connect an electric motor setup to a 400hp V8, it’s STILL a 400 hp V8. It’ll still perform when you need it to. It’ll just switch to electrical power at cruising speed(when that much power isn’t necessary) to conserve fuel. The power is still available on demand. Just hit the gas and there’s all the power, speed, and noise that you love. Therefore, it’s still a muscle car, and it’s one you can drive daily without killing your pockets.

Ofcourse, look at the tesla i would call that a hybrid muscle, i think there is a lot more to come from hybrid vehicles, and they can be fun just like your big power v-8s

Hears’ a thought, why haven’t auto makers explored using deisel-electric hybrids yet? They’ve been used successfully in trains for years and you know the amount of torq it takes to move that kind of weight. I personally believe that diesel is the fuel of the near future and I’m glad to see the industry starting to execpt them more readily…such as the new mitsu RA and the subie oil burner boxer

Hybrid sports car, maybe.
Hybrid muscle car, No.
Hybrids are designed for fuel efficiency, not power. And the only thing a muscle car has, is power.

i dont think it should but i think it will be concidered a muscle car because if chevy does it probally ford will do it to their stang as well and so brings in a new definition of a modern muscle car. quiet slow and good on gas. i like the good on gas part but i like to hear my car when im burnin down the road.

To me, that’s like asking “Is a Mustang II a muscle car?” I like Stangs and give the II credit for keeping the breed alive, but it looks like we could be heading into trouble again just like the ’70s. Do whatever it takes to save the nameplate, just keep the V8s on the options list for those of us who want to have fun.

Either go all-I.C. or all-electric. None of this Hybrid crap. It’s bad enough that Hybrids are permeating the rest of the auto marked. There’s going to be an entire genre of vehicles I will be avoiding ownership that transcends type, i.e.: sedan, minivan, coupe, etc. There ain’t no way in hell I’d even give a first look to a Hybrid Muscle car.

Gotta keep it simpler. Gotta keep it pure. Either I.C. or Electric. That’s IT.

Can a hybrid Camaro be considered a muscle car?
When you hear the term “Muscle Car” we think of a big, fast, loud good looking car with a big engine.
Now think of the term “Hybrid”.We think of a small quiet relatively slow car.
Try to mesh those two together. It just doesnt work.

Can a hybrid Camaro be considered a muscle car?
That’s like saying a Buzzard with gas is the same as a jet fighter.
