Cerberus is Killing the Viper

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Jalopnik is reporting that Cerberus intends to kill off the Viper. Plans for the next generation "ZC" Viper have been scrapped, so they’re just gonna let it run through the 2011 model year and end it there. Since the Viper isn’t exactly the most modern or highly advanced car out there anyway, I don’t see why Cerberus doesn’t just let it run until demand dries up. But, as a cost saving measure, Cerberus may be looking to close whole Connor Avenue Assembly Plant where the Viper is built. Good times!

Do you think Chrysler should kill off its halo car? Let us know.

Dwight your stupid. Google ACR find out how far the vipers influence is, germany, america, even japan. 0-60 under in under 4.3 is slow to you. You must be freakin riding lighting cause that is top of the line. Go ahead find out how many other cars are handbuilt, then find out how much it costs, then youll realize what the viper really is. It reinvented the American sports car at its introduction. And your gonna dog it. Google how many 1st place finishes it has in so many of the racing divisions its entered. Today is about technology, computerized valve timings, superchargers, 12 to 16 cylinders, computerized transmissions. The viper is one of the only naturally aspirated cars that hits 60 under 4 and holds the record at nurburgring. The viper isnt meant for you to go to the market, meant for you to feel like your in a lazy boy, its meant to keep you glued to your seat, as you rip through your local race track. To see it go would just be dumb.

I remember seeing the Viper show car on the cover of Road & Track, and being elated when they decided to build it.

I remember reading that Lamborghini engineers (back when Chrysler owned Lamborghini) worked out the changes needed to cast the LA-based V-10 truck block from aluminium instead of from cast iron.

I remember that the RT/10 was a throwback to the real sports cars: engine, some suspension, somewhere for the driver and a friend to sit, and that was about it.

Then came the GTS, the LeMans racing, Team Viper becoming SRT, the SRT-10 that diluted everything a bit.

And now it is all coming to an end.

Sad, sad situation, but I guess all good things must come to an end. It won’t be the first time. They did kill Plymouth, after all.

As much as I dislike the situation, all I can do is say “So it goes” and hope that whatever formula they dream up will give Chrysler the first really solid footing it has had since the ’60s.

I hear some of you hating and I don’t get it. You act as though the car has done something to you. The Viper is the Halo car for the Chrysler Corporation (Cerberus), without it they have no “American” dream machine. GM has Corvette, but it is a car that is mass produced. The Viper is hand built at the Conner Assembly planet. Name another car built like that, at a cost near that. The Viper is an in your face kind of car. The only other cars that match the same passion level are the Lamborghini, Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa, and Lotus. The Corvette is a great car for the money, but you see one every day. I can drive for months without seeing a Viper on the road. Take the car for what it is worth…top of the line American Performance. If you think it is slow and handles like a brick…then you have obviously never ridden in one. Peace Out.

Dwight..I can tell you have never driven any of the high end cars. I own my second Viper and also a 1000 HP Corvette. I have owned and driven just about every car out there. We have built race cars that have won SCCA championships and have consulted factory teams. The Viper as we see it today is the most bang for your buck. It handles excellent, brakes fantastic and has more useable power than most cars 3 times it’s price. Don’t knock it until you have owned one. Try to find a new one. You’ll wait months and pay $15,000 over sticker. That’s the kind of car it is.

I understand why they are killing. The liberal tree huggers that have imposed crazy CAFE standards on us while China and India produce more and pollution every year don’t want us driving Vipers. They want us all to be driving Hybrids. I would someone to tell me what puts out more pollution. The 2000 Vipers that were built last year or one Chinese factory turning out lead filled childrens toys.

It really sucks to see the Viper go. It’s a kick ass car! But thats not what I’m here to say. I can’t keep quiet after reading TJ’s comment. You say at the end, ” so dont hate on crystler with a uneducated opinion,,,,thats all i got to sat about that” Take your own advise buddy! Read through your comments and see what kind of jack ass mistakes you made in EASY spelling. Some, you could say were fat fingering, but discise!!! really? Just try reading things over before making statements about being educated!

Although it is regrettable that Chrysler is short minded enough to end the production, of the only competition that the Corvette had, it’s a good thing for Chevrolet. One of the posters made some comments about how the Corvette sucks. Obviously, he either does not have one or has not driven the more recent models. I just bought my first Corvette and I am very pleased with it. Unlike the Viper, the Corvette gets great gas mileage, great insurance rates, plenty of storage for a sports car, great everyday car, very comfortable ride (although a bit noisy) and I think a much nicer looking car tan the Viper. I did consider a Viper, but when you compare the above items to the Viper, the Viper does not come close. Even for a sports car, the Viper is a very rough riding car. Granted, it has tremeandous HP, but who needs that? If you need that much HP, get a Corvette Z06 or ZR1. Now at least for Corvette, they won’t have too much competition in that particular sports car category, except for some fo the European makes.

well first of all there is no over the seas made muscle car ever, the skyline is my fav but all of the ignorent dumbasses on here dont know shit bout the viper, first of all the viper is all hand made put together by american people, look it up,,second the corvette is junk ive worked on many vettes,u cant drive down the road on a summer day without seeing one,n who cares, when ur driving n see a viper u turn head no matter what ur into, plus in this year of 08 the viper is coming with cam in cam technoligy witch no car has ever had n will prove to be the best idea of th 2000s,yea chevys making that gay new corvette thatll cost u aa 100grand to get some piece of crap production line car with balls, before people start badmouthing the viper take a look at henneysie vipers n venem vipers witch stock push close to n over 1000hp,show me a production vette that doesthat,,,,plus a viper is considered sumthing like a american exotic, and joe shmoe with a good pay check can afford a vette, but not a viper, the magnum is a nice car wich u can get with a HEMI a fu**** hemi i mean come on,whats chevy got goin for them.nuthing, yea its a shame the charger isnt what it should be but hey thats the deal we got,the 300c is a pimp ride named the best in class,,,car n driver, the srt 4 is remarkable,a 20grand car that was provin to be the fastest for its price, faster then a poursh boxter 0 to 60 n has proven to be faster then evos n stis, now how did they make a car with less horsepower then those but still make it faster,,,its the guinious behind crystler,as for jap cars they suck, when u work on them n have seen there ins n outs u realize that all they have is better looks n intiriors, the make them very cheaply n sell em them for alot more if u saw what there made of u would never even want a ride in them believe me,now back to the viper its sad to see it go but if they need to do it to survive then so be it,n may i remind all u haters mercedes has owned crystler for a long time, not honda n mystubishi has had a partnership with them even longer,ie eagle talon eclypse avenger eclypse, stratus coupe eclypse,so when u get a eclypse ur gettin a dodge in descise, duah,so dont hate on crystler with a uneducated opinion,,,,thats all i got to sat about that

Feb 11, 2008 at 5:18 am

Its about fucking time god dam it, how about just stopping production tomorrow, huh, Its full time America stop making shitty cars and try to atleast create something up to world standards, the viper was slow ugly plasticky and gay, it had zero controllability and though a V10 it was still slow, come on just close, I drove past a dealer for almost everyday for a whole yr and for that whole year there was one in the window, to show how much it sucks.

Feb 11, 2008 at 3:59 am

I think scrapping the Viper would be a good step for Chrysler. Since the old days big v8′s have been the baseline for American performance, even with the Viper’s V10. With the was gas prices are going up and Japan taking over with smaller engines, Chrysler need to work on something that can compete with them. Maybe it’ll give them more room to broaden their view and put their efforts into a 4-cyl that save gas and still have the power to outperform the modern Honda.

Personally I think too many people miss the point and the idea of a Viper. It was never built for the purpose of maximum comfort. Someone in this post said “you can’t fit shit in it” well no shit! It’s a Dodge Viper it’s supposed to be a sports car if you want a car that offers creature comforts up the ass go buy a Mercedes or BMW or some shit like that. Vipers were built to driven not to carry luggage and groceries. I think it’s a shame they’re gunna end it.

Feb 11, 2008 at 1:30 am

Considering that I walked a Viper from 60-150 in my little turbo four cylinder, it is probably for the best. The ride comfort and build quality of the Viper has never really been that great anyways.

You know, when Chrysler asked Shelby and a team of engineers in the early ’90s to build a no-nonsense ’60s like nostalgic roadster, the Viper was what came of it. It was Shelby’s way of producing a successor to the Cobra(hence the snake name). They wanted raw unrestrained power. They got it and that’s what Viper’s always been about. I’d hate to see it go. Mechanically, It’s the closest thing to true ’60s inspired muscle, but if it doesn’t make business sense to keep it, then they’ll have to drop it.

always loved the viper, but really i dont see much of a chance of it selling much in the future. its like a novelty item, it seems like everyone likes it but its not practical to own. its a basic sports car, but you cant fit shit inside of it. easy to try to slide, sounds good, looks sexy, but its long and is based off of a truck engine (upgraded thankfully) and unfortunately kinda sucks gas like one too. If dodge can pull off quality i think they might have a chance, but at the rate theyre going they may not even exist in the next 10 years. i say do whatever it takes to stay afloat, if we lose that many jobs in one year from a single company, plus the ripple effect of all the parts companies and suppliers and so forth, that would make the dollar fall to complete shit faster than you could empty your bowels of diarhea.

I work for a division of Chrysler and the Viper has always and will continue to be the dream car for the Mopar family. Times are changing, fuel restrictions are getting tougher, and the company is getting back on track with a new plan. The challenger is great, expensive now, but in 09 you’ll see it with a 5.7 hemi and a v6 which will make it more affordable. The plan right might seem like nothing for the Viper after 2011, but if Cerebus turns around Chrysler I imagine there will be plans to continue the Viper and the SRT. They cant plan on it now until they get the company back on track and profitable. Expect the worse, hope for the best.

I really think they shouldnt kill off the viper, is by far one of the best all out performance cars in the world and a lot of what makes it awesome is that it is so simple, lightweight, good styling and monstrous power that tops a lot of ferraris porsches and lambos, they DEFINITELY SHOULD NOT END IT!!!!!

I’m as much of a viper fan as the next guy…well maybe not…as has been said in a few comments the viper is a dinosaur in its technology…..its still a very baisic sports car. And lets face it…when the latest style came out i dont think we were all like oooh aaaah …..for myself i know i was more like…what the hell thats what they chose to do to there flagship. Anyways i think a break from the viper would be fine, either that or jsut change it…by no means unrecognizable but exotic it up a little. The viper isnt that much cooler than the charger right now.

The Viper is the FACE of dodge/chrysler and SRT. Without the viper the re is No top dog in their line up which invokes people to buy their performance brand. Eventually, they will have to go back to a supercar, so why not just improve on the viper?

Yes but these cars sound like lawnmowers made in china.

They are not real man, They are not REAL. I could also take and american engine slap a couple of turbos, bring up the compression, make them rev higher and my car will last till the warranty. Just like the skubidoos, i mean subarus. For example, the S2000 had 240hp @ 7000 RPM approx. If you try to use these little ponies everytime you drive the car, Make sure you check your oil daily after a year.

Most people posting there opinion cant even afford a Viper. And If they did, It would be one of the last cars in this price range they would consider buying. Lets face the facts, the Viper is a dying bread. No technology improvement. If you do the math, the 8.4L engine producing 600hp, very very poor . I know this cause im taking an internal combustion engine class and this engine is our example for poor performance. The new Corvette will destroy this car and im not much of a chevy fan also. This car is more of a burden to Chrylser because low production = High cost of production = low profits. I would of get rid of it in 2000. When the viper came out in 1994, it actually looked like a snake. Now It has a generic look like the corvette. It has no dinstictive curves like it used to. Viper owner shouldn’t hate on Chrysler, they are doing you a favor by adding value to their old vipers. People that never owned or cannot own one ever should care about what chysler product they could afford and see if it offers more than the competition. I find that the SRT line is a hit because chrysler made family cars fun for de daddy’s in there mid life crisis. Plus the new Challenger is a hit in my book. Its a complete retro car with modern tech. These cars have V8s adapted to our times (efficient). So stop hatin and remeber that the top 3s (ford, GM and Chrysler) our trying to survive in today’s high demand in fuel efficient cars in the world. I know as a fact that they are late and its not easy for them to adapted and compete. Let them do what they got to do.

Thats all for now!

i think this is a good idea. not that the viper isn’t an awesome car (it entails everything that a modern muscle car should be), but who the hell can afford one? and with the new Nissan GT-R coming into the market, who would want one? It should die in glory, so 20-30 years from now they are the next cuda on the Barret-Jackson auction block.

I’m no business man so I can’t tell them what to do with the Viper, but I must say the it seems like a bad idea to me. I know they must be hurting for money but with the unveiling of the challenger coming soon, and the Viper being what it is I just can’t seem them ending it. The Viper is no classic muscle car but it deffinantly has had its imprint in the car world. If you ask me keep the Viper for much longer, and end anythign else that can be cut, ANYTHING.

Bought the company only to “dismantle” it? Maybe?

It’s nice fighting for number one or being the king of the hill but if there are no contenders left, where’s the fun? I think they should think about losing another line instead of closing down the plant and cutting all the jobs for a super car like the Viper, imo.

Justin
Feb 9, 2008 at 3:08 am

I knew it had to come to something but this… well i guess i’m not surprised at all… Chrysler/Dodge whatever you want to call them has been a disgrace over the last few years so it’s no surprise the final run of 3 (refer to Murphy’s Law, Luck of 3)

1. The 300 series was disgraced from it’s glorious classy past to be rendered into some kind of bubbled flare on wheels. The 300C was OK but since it’s a Magnum without the wagon I stand unimpressed.

2. The Charger, (not as bad as the 80′s El Camino/Ranchero Mini) was reduced to a family dragging heap also disgraced in comparison to its predecessor of a better time and era.

3. Now of course the Viper… as pointed out previously not much of a top of the line car when compared to the competition but coming from a company who’s only having one real “muscle” car to back itself that isn’t in full production yet…(cough*Challenger*cough) which i may add is the only SMART thing Dodge has put out resently…they must be seriously hurting in sales.
