General to Troops: No Trans Am For You!

By John

Editor

The General has just told Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers that they can forget about getting a new Trans Am. The biggest reason cited? Those new CAFE standards which Detroit has been whining, crying and stomping its feet about since before they were even announced. Why aren’t we surprised? But the most amusing part of this announcement is that GM attempted to pacify nervous dealers by saying they’ll—get this—boost production of Buick’s Enclave’s by a whopping 41%. Doesn’t that sound like telling a roomful of toddlers you forget the ice cream—but have plenty of broccoli? What do you think, should Pontiac get a Trans Am? More at Left Lane News.

This is the time when they should make it because the new cars face it they suck on looks. And if they want a comeback they should build the Trans-am and all the others, but dont make them look so stupied, the 1981 trans-am was good but it had a lot of horse power now if they got the body of the 1981 trans-am and put a small v6 in it an put slanted lights on it it would get good gas per gal……..

This new management does not have what it takes to keep up with the present market. Ford and Dodge brang the old school Mustang and Charger alive! On te other hand, GM killed the dream when they stopped producing more TA’s and Camaro’s, but kept the Vette’s around. I don’t understand why? They just targeted a small portion of the market of those who are willing and can buy a Vette loosing profits left and right on TA’s and Camaro’s sales! In my book, fire them all! Poor market research. And Yes, GM should bring back the retro TA WS6!

Look….

Time for GM to step up and wake up.

I mean how much did they just spend putting out the Caddy CTS-V Coupe concept?? You wanna talk about a niche vehicle?? How much they gunna sell that for?? 80k??? Boost Enclave production….Great…that helps the patriotic mens club types with hauling more clubs to the golf course…I mean they coulda bought a Lexus or a Beamer right???

But what about Pontiac Gear Heads??? The guys (and ladies) that go to car shows and drag strips every weekend, NOT the golf course… You know, working class folks…those that can afford 35k for a Pony Car (2 doors, not 4 please), not 80K for a CTS V Coupe or Corvette.

Look, the Pontiac G8 is a great car. Im way more excited about the G8 than I was about the GTO… especially since it’s going to come to Canada too… And you know what, the Solstice works too… especially for people that want a stand out roadster but cant afford or dont want a V-8 (or maybe cant drive one) Corvette.

So at the end of the day where does this 200 million to Build a new Trans Am come from anyways??? I mean how much did they spend to make over the Solstice and call it the Saturn Sky? How much did it cost them to make over the GMC Acadia and call it the Buick Enclave?? All this Cafe stuff is BS and an excuse at best… If the Camaro is going to live, its gunna hafta overcome the Cafe requirements too… So its not like the problem goes away if there is no Trans Am….

My thought is this…. GM DOES NOT CARE ABOUT PONTIAC PEOPLE. The internet forums all talk about bringing back the Trans Am. I mean does someone sit in a room at GM HQ and read this stuff???

Trans Am people are not Camaro people…. I dont think I will ever buy a Camaro… Im more likely to buy a Cobalt SS SC (O yeah they stopped making that too)if Im gunna buy any chevy… dont assume a Trans Am enthusiast will buy a Camaro.. there is a good chance they wont.. we are very loyal to our brand. If I cant lease a new one, I will be buying a used LS1 Ram Air car.

Finally, maybe it has something to do with the name… after all it used to be that they had to pay 20 bucks to the SCCA (I believe it was the SCCA) everytime they built a car with the name Trans Am…. What if that needs to be re-negotiated?? They might want a whole lot more now, since that agreement was probably commited to in 1969.

I find the whole thing frustrating….GM is rolling out some great stuff, and Im encouraged, but GM Brass like Lutz and the others keeps turning their back on the Trans Am people… Well remember this, there are more people alive that remember Smokey and the Bandit and Knightrider than there are that remember Royal Bobcat GTOs… Who do you want to market to? Dead people or people that are still with us and ready to spend money on their next WS6 Ram Air “Displacement On Demand Cafe Conscieous” Trans Am??? NO GTO, ALL TRANS AM GM!!!

PS: Im with the guy that talked about after market body kits for the Camaro converting to Trans Ams… Foose gets a hold of one and someone pays him to do it…Wait until you see his Next Gen Trans Am… Then GM will be scatching their head saying “we shoulda done that.” Bean counters are still in control of GM sadly. :(

Passionatley yours,
Gary

Obvious the camaro won’t die, the pontiac pony car must live again, or at the rate GM is going, might as well change their name to Daewoo.

They need to chop the head off GM and grow a new one. The Execs there seem to be able to do nothing other then throw money away. The Camaro is a good start…but they should bring back the TA too…i dont know about one taking from the other…i love TA’s and would buy one the day it got on the lot…but a camaro?? no thanks, not for me. Anyway with new super affordable, super reliable, super cars coming from toyota, nissan, and honda…pontiac will need a Trans Am to complete…and the G8 just wont cut it. Besides…eveyone knows that in order to get people on the lot to actually think about buying your cars, the lot needs to have a kick ass car out front to lure them in. I dont know about you but a screamin chicken on a bad ass TA would get my attention!!!

given the originals were hyped by a movie that jumped the most horrendous unibody design…I would hope they got a modern keeper with a real build, even short lived like some of the dodge hemi.

I dont see the point with the new camaro comeing out. its just going to cannibalise each others sales.

If Ford isn’t gonna bring back a Mustang-based Cougar, then I guess GM sees no need for a 2nd ponycar either.

They should see how well the Camaro sells first. If it does well. Suprise the public in like 2011 with the release of the Trans Am.

Well is up to the aftermarket world now. Im hurt that GM couldn’t figure it out. How about splitting the production numbers between both brands like the trucks ? Give the guys that attend SEMA 5 minutes of thinking time and I can almost guarentee you that the following year there will be “conversion kits” to turn them into T/A’s. I cant wait.
