In America, Multi-Car Owners Rule

By Jen

Editor

Okay, so maybe we don’t exactly "rule," but we could form a pretty burly voting bloc if we had anything in common besides our overflowing garages. A new Experian study found that, of car-owning households, 35% had three or more vehicles, making 3+ owners "the single biggest group among American car owners." Among the study’s other findings:

  • Washington DC had the highest percentage of single-car households, whereas South Dakota had the highest percentage of homes with five or more cars. I can vouch for that.
  • In households with two vehicles, the most popular pairing is a pickup truck with a general-purpose sedan.
  • Two-vehicle households are most likely to stick to strictly domestics. As owners get up into three or four rides, you’re more likely to see a mix of domestics and imports.
  • The national average of 2.28 vehicles per household easily tops the number of children per household (2.1 per woman, but only around 0.6 per household). Car-collecting is more popular than childbearing!

In light of all this, I wonder why it’s so hard to find small, affordable house with a 4-car garage. How many cars in your household? And where do you keep them all?

I have my “Shop” that is 50ftx80ft where I keep the 4 wheelers, the wave runners, and the Ranger bass boat. My ’07 TrailBlazer SS is in there getting a new rearend put on and the ’98 Bravada is in there getting the finishing touches done to the motor. The ’01 Cavalier ( wifes first car) is at our church where we let them use it cause their car broke, and the ’07 Honda CRV ( My Daily) , the ’07 Equinox Sport ( Wifes new car) are in the driveway. When the Pontiac Ute comes out, I am putting it in the Shop and moving the Bravada out.

That’s 5 for now, 6 when I get my Ute.

I am 24, my husband is 25. We have 4 cars between us: ’02 Sentra SE-R spec V, ’04 Sentra SE-R Spec V, ’05 Sentra SE-R, and a ’04 BMW 325xi. Two of them are in garages (the Spec Vs – luckily our apt complex allowed us to get two garages) and the other two are in the parking lot

We have 7. Three Dodge Caravans, one for dad, one for mom, and one for sale, and 4 Honda Civics, one for each of the kids. The vans go in the driveway and the cars usually get parked on the… “unpaved extension” (read: yard).
