AMC To Resume Production!

By Jen

Editor

Okay, so it’s admittedly kind of weird that the magazine world’s wonky publishing timetable requires that Hot Rod be putting out its April Fool’s issue now—but then, this is one prank I didn’t want to have to wait for. The mag claims that American Motors is refurbishing its old plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and returning as "a full-line, full-service car company to do battle with the domestics and imports in the highly competitive North American marketplace." AMC will be churning out everything from a pillarless luxury sedan (the revamped Ambassador) to fuel-efficient compacts—that’s right, the retrostyled Gremlin and Pacer, below! I don’t care how much everyone claims to hate these cars—if they really did bring these back, they’d sell like crazy.

I thought Mopar bought out AMC and cut up everything in the shops except the Jeeps

The original Gremlin came with a 304 V-8 as a factory option; I know a guy in Nashville who still drives one…nasty sick little car, regularly blows most imports into the weeds. The nice thing about the AMC blocks was that they were all exactly the same size externally, so that a 360 or a 401 would drop right in where the 304 came out. Randall American in Mesa, Arizona would do these conversions right off the showroom floor. For a couple of grand over the sticker price, you had something that would give a case of the willies to a stock Z-28. Yeah, I’d buy one…since my 360 Gremmie would pull the front end off the ground in the first two gears, on street tires, I have some good memories of those cars.

The Pacer looks pretty cool. Not too fond of the back window on the Gremlin.

Is it a joke or not? I need an answer… I hope its not because I would love to own a Gremlin!

The next person who claims that “it will cause too much domestic competition” needs to take an economics class…..

That was one hell of an announcement that I read in my new issue of Hot Rod Mag. I don’t know why but the new Pacer and Gremlin are actually kinda cool to me. That is strange… Then again, I am looking forward to seeing some AMC’s back on the road with a new look!

amc will never return i live in kenosha and the only thing that AMC left is the chrysler engine plant and the AMC community credit union. The engine plant i believe makes the smaller v6′s for the 300c and magnum and possibly a jeep engine. their lakefront plant was demolished in the early 90s and now there are condos there. Complete car production is not going to happen here again, which is a shame because I would have liked to see that car production here ended in 1988 when i was a youngen. That would be sweet to see them replace the neon srt with some thing like this tho much cooler!

That would be sweet if AMC was back. Then they could bring back the AMX.

Well, as much as Id like to see them come back its never going to happen. Chryler bought them out and did away with them. So Chrysler has the legal rights to AMC and they will not bring them back because that will only make more the domistic compitition greater. So theres no reviving them. As for the Gremiln and Pacer even if they were to come back they would never bring them two back to life. Well not so much the Gremlin as for the Pacer. In the 1970′s the Pacer was suposed to “Bring back AMC” but what it did was put them in a hole so far they had to calln it quits and sell out. They looked like a mobile green house. Noone bought them then and I can tell you for sure noone will buy them now. Sorry but it just wont happen.

you guys are all retarded, there’s a reason AMC is no longer with us… It was like a sick dog that needed to be put down! These 2 cars are hideous, and they were meant to be a joke! But they are gonna bring back the ’09 Edsel though!

That AMC Pacer Looks Tight As Fuck. If They Were To “EVER” In History Bring These Cars Back, The Pacer Would Most Definitely Be The One I’ll Be Going For…But The Gremlin Looks Exceptionally To. I’m Sure If They Were, Or If They Are To Ever Bring These Cars Back, They Would Sell Like Freakin’ Crazy!!!

What about the Javelin and the AMX? They should put the same HEMI in them as they are the ’09 Challenger! I would buy one. The Pacer and Gremlin look cool too.

I don’t see why they shouldn’t look at how good the Mini is still doing! Thiers definitely a new market with mini owners, and an old market for those that loved amc in the past. They do look pretty sick, I’d drive one. -Justin

That Gremlin X looks sweet! wheres the AMX?!

Robert
Feb 16, 2008 at 3:08 pm

That Gremlin looks a heck alot like the original Gremlin prototype, The AMX/GT! Richard Teague was a Visionary, the original ‘Vignalle’ AMX prototype would be right at home with these 21st Century renderings. Or the AMX/2, or the AMX/3….. Need I Ramble On, I think not. and yes, Mopar has the copyrights to all the AMC stuff.

Hot Rod has always knew they can make fun of AMC, because they couldn’t ever beat them without some serious Hot Rodding!

Does that make my car a ‘Mercedes’ Javelin?
AM C-ya!
P.S.My ’73 Matador 2dr Hardtop appreciates the thumbs up!

AMC is Not coming back.
It’s a spoof.
Hot Rod Magazine’s April Edition, posed it as an April Fools Day Joke.

I agree…the artist did an awesome job, and I would have checked one out too!

I was amazed when I saw that article in this month’s issue of HOT ROD. Although I did kind of wonder what they were thinking with some of their ideas, I believed it. And then I noticed the little text box on the last page of the article. It took a few retakes to realize it was a joke.

Hey 70Javelin360 and Chris Campbell: they did a retrostyled AMX, Javelin, and Matador as well. See ‘em in the April ’08 issue of HRM.

There’s just no friggen way.

Chrysler has a death grip on AMC branded things….unless they sold the rights, but even then who would want to buy a company that it seems like everyone hated?

Please don’t get me wrong, I think AMC is the coolest car company to have ever existed (proof, my Pacer), but it’ll be a cold day in a very hot place when I see a new Pacer or any new AMC roll off the assembly line.

Nice joke HRM…got me excited that Chrysler was launching a throw-back brand for a second.

I would like them to bring back a 1973 style Matador coupe, that was a cool car!

Who the hell drew these? Just plain awesome.

If the DeLorean can be resurrected, any long-gone model, I suppose could be brought back. I don’t know if Chrysler had rights to the Pacer or Gremlin names, since they had acquired the vestiges of AMC (or did they just get JEEP?, perpaps).
-
Here’s an idea for a new car company: one that takes various popular models from years and companies of long ago, and recreates them in the new retro wave that’s sweeping the automotive industry.
-
Imagine if the AMX was redone? I would love to see that, but there’s gotta be more than just former American Motors cars that people wanna see again? or not?

Wait a minute. I thought AMC was just as dead as Studebaker and Nash. Could someone clarify where they’ve been the past couple decades?

Im confused, is this serious or a prank or wishfull thinking. I just cant see this being true. I always thought the Gremlin and the Pacers were ahead of there time. Granted they need todays styling to make me crave a new one.
