Haul-Ass Family Hauler

By David

aka Highspeedhijinks

Before I tell you what Nicholas is about to race against, let me tell you what he’s bringing to the party: he owns a 1989 Dodge Caravan Turbo with a few goodies up its sleeve. A short list includes: a rebuilt Garrett T3 turbo converted to TII specs, a T2 intercooler with piping, an Eagle Talon blow off valve, and an oversized tranny cooler from a Ram Van. All this is in the process of being installed as Nicholas prepares to race his friend Andrew and his Trans Am at the drag strip this July. If you take out your magnifying glass and read their signed race agreement, you’ll see that there’s 200 bucks on the line. There are not yet any specs on the Trans Am, but my best guess is that hes got an ’87 GTA with a 350 TPI. Personally, I think Nick can take him. Just check out this video of another turbo Caravan going up against a Camaro. Place your bets now: who do you think is gonna win this summer?

Think it can beat a Firebird?

I say the van wins unless it is a LT1 car and even at that the van might still win.
Here is my van

I ran 14 psi on a intercooled 2.5 with a mitsu (little turbo) and an automatic. I am buildind a 89 2.2 fully forged and converting van to 5 speed. I have a list of muscle cars wanting to race it. I raced 95 LT1 automatic Z28 and from a 20mph roll and he won by 2 cars and that was my small turbo! He got out laughing and said..I WANNT A F’N van now!

The van will probably win. I’ve seen them run 12s and lower. Heck, that same engine is in my Duster, and it MOVES.

VAN = BRICK. well, TURBO BRICK.

If the Firebird is a 4th gen V8, it’s a fast van, but still loses.

there’s something wrong about this whole caravan thing though. Just about the only thing Iacocca did that was racy was the first ‘stang, and even that left a lot to be desired (sorry Ford lovers)… but his van? my stomach churns at the though of this &#&#& #& #&#& beating a Firebird, unless it’s an economy model like mine.

I think he has more than a chance. Older 4-cyl Dodges are known for their impressive torque(thanks to a very long stroke), bullet proof reliability, and sleeper like character, but watch out!!! These things are the original pocket rockets. Shelby started putting his name on ‘em in the early ’80s, an entire decade before Japanese tuning gained popularity and 20yrs before the Neon SRT-4. Some fellow modified turbo Dodges are putting out as much as 500hp and nearly the same amount of torque. With that said, he’ll blow the doors off that Trans Am with the proper set up.

This van is awesome! After seeing how well the other turbo van did against the Camaro, I think he has a pretty good chance against the Trans Am.

Go Nick!!! I though you might want a little support from one TD fan to another. Check my Spirit R/T out sometime, man.
