Mahindra Hybrid Diesel Pickup for US Market

By Jen

Indian automaker Mahindra will be soon be expanding into the domestic market. It will be offering a Toyota Tacoma-sized diesel pickup truck, likely to be called the Appalachian, in 2009. By 2010 it’ll be followed by a diesel hybrid version, the first hybridized diesel to be offered in a production passenger vehicle. The straight diesel will deliver 145-150 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque while getting 30-35 mpg, and the pricing is expected to be in the low 20’s (tack on a few thousand bucks, and a better mpg, for the hybrid). According to Pickuptruck.com, an importer involved in the deal promises that the new truck will not be "Chinese junk," which makes a certain amount of sense, given its country of origin.

Your last line shows your ignorance about India’s manuafacturing capacity. Its proximity to China does not mean that the country manufactures good of that quality. And if that was true, it would not have become the technology hub for the world. The view is clearly not expectable from an editor!

Look at the Toyota pickup offered in South Africa

We can’t get such a simple, heavy duty, no nonsense truck here in the US. Perhaps Mahindra will offer US customers some great trucks that we all want. And then Toyota will start offering their more simple trucks here.

“Words fail to describe how ugly that thing is.”

As long as it delivers the performance and durability promised (and it better do so if they’re going to price it well over $20K), people who truly value function over form won’t care what it looks like to others.

In my opinion, this is a giant step forward by stepping backwards: getting back to basics with a no-bullshit product.

I hope it succeeds unbelievably, and steals as many sales away from the fat, lethargic “big 3″ as possible, so that hopefully they’ll wake the hell up at some point and turn out some vehicles of real use to conscious consumer.
