El Cheapo Paint Job

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

Can’t afford to take your car to Maaco? Want to do it yourself for under $100? Well, a technique involving foam brushes and Rustoleum has been circling the net for a while now. I first saw it on Moparts last year, and it was featured in Hot Rod a few months later. The two best documented examples I’ve seen on the web recently are on at Chevy Corvair at rickwrench.com and on a Chevy Beretta at stylusscustoms.com.

What’s the cheapest paint job you’ve done, and how did it come out?

I rattlecanned my Formula when I was about 20 (abt 1985)… in Krylon gloss black. Went over the car at least a few times, again and again, at that point not expecting a consistent finish. The main thing was to get a thick coat that didn’t have runs if at all possible. Used many, many cans of paint. After a few days, I wet sanded it, then used rubbing compound. Re-shot a couple areas where the black was too thin and wet sanded/compounded again to even things out. After that I used polishing compound and finally waxed it a few times.

The results were pretty amazing. Inended up adding (2) white 9″ wide stripes the whole length of the car, oriented with the Ram Air scoops on the hood.

The car looked great. Wish I had pictures of it.

Thats interesting, but seems like may more work than I’d want to do by hand. That and on plastic pieces I dont see it being able to flex in the heat or cold.
