Sacramento Gold Rush Wins UTI Hot Rod Q Challenge

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

In 2006 it was Factory Five Cobras. In 2007 it was ’89 – ’95 Mustangs. Five UTI campuses competed to build the best budget Stang for the UTI/Hot Rod Q Collegiate Challenge. Each team received a project car, a budget of $10,000 from Summit Racing (not including wheels and tires) and ten months to complete the builds. The cars were then brought together and given scores for their dyno performance, 60-0 braking, elapsed time through a 420-foot slalom, quarter mile time and a subjective score based on the judge’s opinions of the cars. These were some tough cars and the competition was fierce. This video shows how Houston’s car suffered a major nitrous mishap. Neither Hot Rod or UTI appear to have updated their sites with all the details, but you can read the full story in the current issue of Hot Rod. The winner, Sacramento Gold’s awesome Fox Body, dynoed at a healthy 600hp and ran the quarter in 11.8 seconds.
