Toyota FJ Cruiser vs. Jeep Wrangler: Which Would You Choose?
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
Ok, I admit it’s always fun to pit imports vs. domestics. Brings out the best in people (though that Nissan vs. Honda showdown got a bit heated, too). Both of these vehicles are great off-road, and they look great on the road, too. Both are affordable, have huge aftermarket support, and are very popular at CarDomain. So, which would you choose?

Sorry to say this to all you jeep lovers but I was recently up in the woods here in Colorado on a 4×4 camping trip with five jeep rubi’s and my FJ. Before we started everyone was asking me if my girlfriend was ok with me taking her car through the woods. After we got up the mountain there were coming up to me asking how much the FJ was going for and they just about shit them self’s when they found out it was stock. The jeep is a good rig but no stock jeep would have been doing what my FJ was, some of the rubi’s were having problems doing what my FJ was. With that being said just no if I ever see you and your jeep stuck out in the woods I will be more then happy to pull you out with my FJ!!!

I seriously don’t understand the arguments here. The Wrangler and the FJ are both great vehicles but shouldn’t be compared to one another. I will agree that off-road capabilities are similar with each one having an edge in different areas, but they are totally different vehicles. Sure the safety of the FJ is superior, but isn’t it fun to take off the doors, top and lay the windshield down in the summer? Isn’t it also nice to have the availablity of 4 doors and a vehicle without a huge blind spot. One can speak of quality all they want, please tell me how the LIFETIME WARRANTY works on the FJ. I sell Jeep Wranglers and own a 2009 Rubicon Unlimited. Having said that, I’ve never had a Wrangler buyer shop an FJ and my good friend next door at the Toyota store will say the same about his FJ. They are NOT comparable vehicles so quit comparing them. All the trash talk from both sides is a bit ridiculous as well.

I’ve had nothing but Jeeps since the day I started driving and I LOVE them.. probably always will. I may be biased coming from a Jeep family, but I’ve never had any real complaints to this day. My most recent purchase is a black 2007 Wrangler Sahara 2dr and it is my favorite by far! I’ve taken it off road a few times now (mainly through mud and water), and only got stuck once. My close friend has a 2007 FJ and we bicker all the time about whose is better. He has a blue shirt that matches his smurf blue FJ (lame) that says “F**K Jeep” and he somehow manages to wear it everytime he’s around me, but we’ve both acknowledged that each has their own particular benefits and cannot truly be compared to one another.

Ok you guys, Wranglers are cute, but lets face it, Toyota tops it! Why you ask? This vehicle is SAFE! and you and go off roading if you want too. I rather be in a FJ than a thin tin job any day! Toyota does make a great product! This page is supposed to be about the vehicles not American loyalty. If the American automakers want me to buy their vehicle then they better come down on price for what they produce. I used to own a Ford F-150. Never buy one again. It was not even a year old and little things like the seals started to leak.

I’m really confused about crapyota drivers who brag how their cars are better than anything else . No correct me if i’m wrong but, wasn’t the fake jeep just a rip off of a jeep like the nissan patrol ? didnit crapyota just announced no more fake jeeps come 2009 which in turn is nearly an exact rip off jeeps willy concept ? Again another fake jeep when will you crapyota drivers understand the meaning to ” only one JEEP ” dumbasses ! Like you’re f@#king ugly ramdra [tundra] piece of sh#t ! And it’s funny how little idiots like you put down jeeps but yet drive a cheap look alike , now quit crying little bitchies and go dry you’re tears . …oh I almost forgot didnit crapyota have more recalls in 2008 compared to anyone else and wasn’t it JEEP who out sold you’re 4×4 and everyone included . 1 more thing before I leave who has the most awards jeeps or crapyota f.ake j.eep throughout the years and who never stopped production and still going strong . Also the longest lasting 4×4 ever and don’t get me started on land rover not bad 4×4’s but tons of issues even worse than jeep , plus didnit the guy use jeep parts for his first land rover ? I guess he couldn’t afford a real JEEP like crapyota drivers so he made a immatation . FACE LOSERS JEEPS WILL ALWAYS RULE WHILE OTHERS DROOL!

Hey, we all know that the FJ Cruiser is a great vehicle. I can say the same for Jeeps also. I have no real bias here. I own two cars, a Nissan Maxima with 168,000 miles on it that runs like new and a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 148,000 that also runs like new. I’ve had American cars that broke down a lot and I also owned a Toyota Camry that broke down a lot. When given a choice I’ll buy American, or at least a car built in America, but I buy the MODEL more than the BRAND. Every automaker is capable of building a lemon—the Nissan Armada’s brakes are notorious for wearing out pads—and every automaker can build a peach like the Chrysler 300C, an awesome car for the price tag. Bottom line, do what works for you. In today’s economy it’s every man for himself.

Lets all remember that Ford is the pioneer of the automotive industry. Personally i am not a Ford fan, but the point being made is that it is an american company producing american vehicles. Where is your pride of being an american here? Go ahead and buy a foreign vehicle and help support all those other countries that won’t help us back. It is historically known that jeeps have been around longer than the FJ. Were they driving toyotas during WWII? hhmmmmmm, i don’t believe so. Jeep has a reputation to uphold, and a good one at that. And so far they have produced great wranglers, in my eyes. Hey thumbs up to all you jeep bashers, go ahead and burn the american flag while your at it. This is why our country is going down the crapper. Because everyone wants a better deal. FJ’s are probably cheaper than wranglers, but remember that saying “you get what you pay for”.

so damn many idiots.
if you are thinking willy in the 40s were good, and therefore new wrangler is good, you need to go back to college and learn some critical thinking.
i don’t know about off road capabilities.. but it has been shown that toyota has consistently better quality than any other american made cars. (and this has nothing to do with american car workers, as alot of the foreign brands are made in US by American workers. what’s left? American managers..)
in fact, now that GM and Ford and in deep shit. you can all thank you stupid selves for not making those car companies think twice about keep producing pieces of crap before its too late to steer the ship into a different direction.
buying ‘american’ made american car companies to keep producing pieces of shit.. in the end, there is no coming back… from it.

Toyota quality is just dismal. Owners try to compensate by claiming superior quality but really – just look at them. Closely.
The Fake Jeep is a real Jeep wanna be.
They can only immitate. Poorly. You want to waste your money … but a Fake Jeep. LOL
There are a lot of cheaply made immitations out there. Even some very expensive ones. You want to pay a lot for a boat ride here – then the shipping lines will gladly take your money.
You want to pay foreigners to put a lesser quality vehicle in your driveway … then broadcast your ignorance to your neighbours.
I wouldn’t have a Toyota or Datsun sitting in my driveway. How embarrasing.

I think it all has to do with the driver…plus It is what that person likes…if he doesnt really care about the power than go with the Jeep, but if that person is going to tow stuff, etc and needs more power than get the FJ…But I believe it is what the driver wants and likes.

I own a 2007 FJ Cruiser and stumbled upon this site http://www.eliteaftermarket.com that carries accessories for my vehicle. The prices are reasonable and the site is very nice in comparison to to other like sites. they seem to carry accessories for hummer, Fj cruiser and Escalade also. I typically like sites that have some sort of professionalism and this one covered all basis. They have company info and vision on that site. something not usually found in most ecommerce sites. according to their info, they have access to unlimited parts for all vehicles.

I love these posted. This is the bottom line for all you dumb jeep owners.
Fact Toyota trucks dont break down like jeeps do.
http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/03-int/jeep/liberty/index.html
Pick any jeep truck and look at the recalls you cant even count them all.
2007 wrangler 5 major recalls ( AKA you will die if you dont fix it)
2007 FT 1 not even a issue recall
Take any Jeep from 2000-2008 and look at that recalls. Its sick
now do the same to Toyota
And this is the factorys recalls not whats really wrong with the trucks.
by the way look at this FJ smoking Rubicon
FJ Cruiser eats Rubicon (Duna Grande – Peru)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URPcU5_ymtY&feature=related
Stock FJ no modes with crap tires. ZIP it jeep owners.
FJ Cruiser Miss FJ wheels Hells Gate on Hells Revenge
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5KyVaeeW54
zip it jeep owners…… FJ is just at good as jeep if note better

Well, I think the fact that all across Africa and Australia, where you actually need a decent 4×4, the only brands with real dominance are Toyota and Land Rover, with the Toyotas taking the top spot. The LR is generally a more capable vehicle, but less reliable, is in a county where your life can often depend of your vehicle Toyota is the way forward.

I can’t believe you guys are still trying to compare the jeep to the Toyota Fj. Give it up man …….the Fj is in a league of its own, sitting pretty at the top while all you Fj haters are trying to reach it ……there is no comparison, Toyota is top notch and well we all know Chrysler is garbage ………..no matter how much junk you talk about the Fj you all know it’s an ass kicker in every category!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, come on, Jeep people. I have owned two different Wranglers in my lifetime and am embarrassed to admit it. I do not own an FJ Cruiser but I do have a friend who has the privilege of owning one of these concept-to-reality vehicles. Toyota took a gamble on the design and I, for one, am impressed by that. My friend and I have taken this Toyota to places, and across snow drifts, that my Wrangler(s) would have whimpered at… but, come to think of it, BOTH of my Jeeps spent more time in the shop with electrical (mainly), 4WD (secondly) and ignition problems that I only got a chance to take them teetering around off-road once or twice. Teetering on the brink of tipping over, that is.
Jeep is a junk brand that auto makers are trying to pass on to one another like a hot potato, albeit with the luxury of a high resale value, and it’s been that way for years. Are you looking for a new Wrangler, like I once (err-twice) was? Buy a 2002 instead- you won’t spend any less time trying to keep it running than you would a 2008.
Wrangler- record holder for consecutive years as the Consumer Reports least reliable automobile; in fact, I mentally picture that full row of black circles every time I see a Wrangler on the road (and I can safely assume that both my 1997 and 2002 are in junk heaven by now). Bring your cell phone with you wherever you travel and keep that AAA membership up-to-date, Jeep people. Jeep Wrangler is one of the best examples of wool-over-your-eyes American marketing that has ever been pulled off.
The entire World knows they’re built with balsa wood, Elmer’s glue and some old speaker wire but everyone keeps buying them. Please, Wrangler owners, I beg of you… keep bashing the FJ Cruiser that will be on the road 10 years after your Wrangler craps out trying to cross a drainage ditch. Keep that mystique alive! Your resale value depends on it!

why do jeep owners hate fj cruiser so much?…because they can’t embrace change…like the world war two era jeep wranglers. so outdated!no wonder chrysler is trying to sell the jeep brand to chinese. i will stick with my japan made fj cruiser. sorry! good luck to all the things that are designed to break after warranty with your jeep.

Basic stats here:
The Jeep will own an FJ stock to stock becuase:( WIll Compare Rubicon)
The Axles on The Rubicon are Dana 44’s Locked
The Axles on an FJ i won’t even go to(NOT worth, giving it a save here):)
Toyota does make really long lasting cars yes!
But apparently Jeep doesn’t to all the FJ’s out There!
I see Willy’s running aroumd all the time! I even ran into one with the original motor running! And the Willy’s cam out in the 40’s so if you want to complain then try that on for size!
The would cost you $20,000 more to make it even comparable with a Wrangler! Fun right! If you added that 20,000 to a wrangler you would have an Ultimate Rig!
There really is no comparison between FJ’s and Wranglers! I would like to see a moderatly soft FJ make through Maob ( and i know so snotty FJ person will say well do you see a stock making it through). Never see stock FJ’s making it through but i see stock Jeeps! I have a Bone stock Jeep JK Unlimited Sahara not Rubicon and i ran through this mud hole didn’t even seem like i was in mud! Then an FJ came along and guess what he got stuck in a car he paid probably 30,000 more for its supposed Offroad Ability!
So next time when you think an FJ is better than a Jeep just Think about it!

First off let me say this to all of you jeep fanatics !!! jeep will never ever never ever be better than any toyota….look up consumer reports jeep rates poor top to bottom I dont care what rock it can climb it might take you there but will it bring you back????? 2nd you obvisley have a lack of knowlege about the fj capablities for off roading I’ve wheeled all over the US with my fj and with friends that have jk’s and let me say this, where ever the jeep can go fj goes to and dont let anyone tell you any diffrently and Oh by the way some of thoes jeep guys, yes the ones with the jk’s had to hitch a ride with me back to camp because their jeeps took a dump like a stupid sensor going bad on the trail leaving them hanging….So for all you jeep freaks get a real truck one that doesn’t shit on itself when you really need it!!!!! I used to have a 2001 Jeep Wrangler with the straight six and a 5speed manual. It was bone stock except for 31″ firestone MTRs and I took it lots of places without any trouble at all. I’ve never even seen an FJ offroad, I only see them in town usually driven by 30+ year old women. Toyotas in general perform well off-road but I believe the Wrangler is and always has been a true bare-to-the-bones offroader and therefore I would pick a Wrangler over an FJ any day.

To be fair, here is the only recall I could find on the FJ. Tires are easy to replace and my FJ came with different ones anyhow.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 06V235000 http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov
Manufacturer TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
Recall Date: JUN 26, 2006
Potential Number Of Units Affected: 9434

IF THE BEAD IS DAMAGED, A BULGE MAY DEVELOP ON THE SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE AND AIR MAY LEAK FROM THE AREA OF THE DAMAGED BEAD.
Consequence IF THE TIRE LOSES AIR PRESSURE IT MAY LEAD TO A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND INCREASE THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH.
Remedy DEALERS WILL INSPECT ALL FIVE TIRES, INCLUDING THE SPARE TIRE, TO DETERMINE IF THEY ARE WITHIN THE AFFECTED TIRE-TO-WHEEL ASSEMBLY RANGE AND REPLACE ALL INVOLVED TIRES WITH NEW TIRES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 5, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331. I have wheeled with FJ’s. Sure they can do some stuff, but be able follow a wrangler… I don’t think so. Haven’t seen one to a 4.5 or 5 yet. When an FJ with a 4 inch lift and larger tires (only) can follow a JK with a 4 inch Lift and larger tires, then talk. Otherwise, shut up!!!

Dave H,,,how do ever get an “Equally Modded FJ to the Rub1″…what is this, the joke of the year. Yes, if you put a 10K in a SAS upgrade but to bad, you still don’t have the 4:1 Crawl….now you need a 4K Atlas. If you don’t upgrade to SAS, your lack of Articulation alone will be your downfall. So please don’t put a Rubi in the same sentence as an FJ Cruiser. Way out of your leaque. Maybe an “X” or “Sahara” you might be able to crawl with, but with your Pittyful(Articulation) will be your downfall there to, and will make or break you in many sitiuations. This Editor must of not thought this Compare out very well, A real compare would be an FJ VS 08 Liberty, thats the only Jeep an FJ can have a fair compare with….they just don’ty have the right Stuff. So Editor, FJ vs 08 Liberty next time & we’ll see how that goes.

I’ll stick with my FJ.
as for the Fj having problems? yup, every vehicle has them, but toyota has had a reputation of having quality vehicles. yes the first batch off the floor had problems, most 1st model year vehicles do! lets look over the history of the two companies instead, toyota has built its reputation on reliability and durability. yes the last couple years its started to fall off, but a few thousand vehicles out of the millions they make every year being the worlds largest automaker isn’t that bad in comparison. they made a bad choice in outsourcing a couple parts. Now lets look at jeep. yup, the old ones are great, will take you to hell and back, but turn around and do a simple search on “Jeep” problems and you will find one that sticks out like a sore thumb, that crappy transmission. I have a friend that bought an 07 rubi last year and has had his in the shop for 4 out of the past 12 months! and i hear and see more evidence that its not uncommon for them. and wow…jeep is going to be doing well soon… if you havn’t heard, chrysler is looking to sell the jeep brand, name and everything that “goes with it” to a chinese company. oh well, they can’t make them less reliable i guess right?
2nd, with an equally modded FJ and rubi, unless you are doing some pretty hardcore offroading, the fj will go pretty much anyplace that rubi will.
Does it have blindspots? sure, but its called knowing how to drive. try driving a 5 ton double axle dump truck then drive the FJ, you won’t notice any blindspots.
and to the previous comment about toyota trying to steal military contracts from jeep? ahahaha, it was the military that WENT to toyota to build them a version of the old willies jeeps (not the chrysler version)because it was more cost effective to get them made in japan to use in Aisa then to bring a bunch of jeeps over. Toyota didn’t steal anything, so get some facts straight.
to me i don’t care if you drive a FJ, a wrangler, even a damn H3, if you bought it to wheel it, then wheel it. if not then don’t. i’ll keep my tourquey 4l v6 and i’ll let the wrangler have the 3.8l v6 that they pulled out of a minivan
not hatin, just replying with the same spite the jeep owners are
I like the styling on the jeep’s, i just can’t stand most eveything else (cept the removable top, me likey that.

Having purchased an 05 Xterra, the first of the new generation of 4×4s(H3, FJ, JK all came out a little later) and now involved in a lawsuit against Nissan, I have studied this extensively. I believe seeing all these models come out so quick was a rush to market competition, and engineering suffered in sometimes dramatic ways. Why would the H3 have such extreme engine problems? Body Rips FJ? Never heard of that kind of failure before….And oh, lets slap a monster engine in the Xterra and go with SMALLER differentials then before! WTF? Yes, the J/K has had early production problems, but the bottom line is they are far more minor, and assuming you buy a Rubicon, you just bought the undisputed most capable 4×4 on the market. My next rig will be J/K unlimited Rubicon, and for most prior Japanese 4×4 buyers…Jeep is in there future if they plan to wheel….While Chrysler laughs all the way to the bank and trys to figure out how to produce more Rubicons.

If you plan to attack trails with your rig, go with the Jeep.
If you plan to attack speed bumps at the mall, go with the FJ.
Ouch. I noticed that it ended up on a few Jeep forums and at least one FJ board–maybe the Jeep guys are just more vocal. Anyway, I’ll try to pick a closer match-up next week. Let me know if you have any ideas.
FJ Cruiser VS Liberty or Kia Sorento or Xtera >> perfect match, try one of these…

JUST TEST DRIVE THE WRANGLER OPEN MINDED. YOU WILL LOVE IT. Um when it comes down to it: Wrangler equals best resale value over everything other then the infinity….The wrangler isn’t top quality as far as the plastics, but when it comes to every other aspect its an amazing Offroader.
H2 has a good engine horrible offroader….I sold cars for 7 years the only guys that bought them seemed to have short man complex ,trying to prove themselves to be real men. Fellas your wrong!!!!! A guy that makes some money but thinks his H2 will make his dick bigger. The H2 doesn’t make your little muscles bigger.HIT THE GYM-Buy a jeep !!!!
FJ= FUCKING JUNK!!!!! FJ fans are just plain out DORKS that like to stand out with a hideous looking MINIVAN looking space vehicle. Has anyone seen the picture of the convertible FJ …. def a corky ramano looking piece of shit. I like japanese vehicles but….the last 10 years toyotas quality has taken a dump. Burning oil, sludge problems, and electrical problems. Toyota is going backwards in durability. Other then the Fj toyota makes nice looking cars and trucks, BUT COME ON FJ OWNERS YOU KNOW THE FJ IS JUST BAD IN EVERY WAY. Maybe the next generation Fj I will give credit but this thing is built like the original dodge neon. The FJ looks and is built like a friggin budget chinese vehicle. enough said!!!

haha.. fj is a toy.. Jeep all the way.. IFS VS solid axle.. one is made for offroading, rock crawling, deep water and mud and one is made for taking the girls shopping with a wannabe offroad suspension. Ill say it short. Ive pulled 2 out at pismo beach with my 97 TJ jeep and saw an fj roll and the poor guy almost lost his life in johnson valley.. Just buy a jeep if ur actually going to use it and keep it.. ifs is weaker and wont last.. fj is impressive for todays standards but not to us that wheel and use there 4×4’s.

Jeep all the way. We have 3 jeep TJ’s, 1 cherokee, and a 1955 Willys jeep CJ-5 that is all original that still works and runs just like when it came off the line. There is no comparison the new JK’s have alot of new technology and gizzmos, but they are still as tough as the the original Willys MB that was originally built for the WWII. That heritage goes a long ways.

Toyota went to “Disney” and ask for their most talented Cartoonist,…then they said, create us a new 4×4 that’s unique,…
And they did,…I see it having it’s own attraction at Disney World some day, Come all, ride through the Park in an FJ… oughta be a big hit with kids & women.

Feb 22, 2008 at 12:44 pm
Toyota didn’t even need an FJ Cruiser, they already had the 4-Runner,..same vehicle, different body. Both with “IFS”, so Toyota chose to use the 4-Runner/Prado as their copy cat. No different than GM with the H3 & H2 copied there Truck line. If your going to be unique, get out a clean sheet of paper & at least try to be creative. If Toyota would of been more creative & went after a true Offroad Vehicle they would of started from scratch & built the FJ40 using todays standards with a “Solid Front Axle”. They didn’t, that’s why the JK Wrangler still sets on “Top” of the mountain.

WoW!,..this is worse than the Hillary & Obama War.. I think if the FJ would of not been “Under-Engineered” for real Offroad use, this argument would be on a level playing field. But they built a 90% Softroader, then put a Dab of Offroad Capability so they call it there best Offroader. They put FJ out as a show piece, Jeep is just a Jeep, no show piece, just Kick A$$ Offroad ability right off of the showroom floor. Toyota really gambled when they built the FJ way “Under Engineered”….they are paying a big price today for that mistake. They also are fighting all their Warrany Work, & trying to blame it on the owner’s, I think the new buyers are fed up with Toyota now.

On one hand, I’m a true fan of Toyota. On the other, Jeep has the history of true off-roaders… but so does Toyota. Dunno about overseas, but here in Oz a true off-road vehicle is a Landcruiser. Think about it. Even Jeep has started making ‘Soft-Roaders’ that couldn’t make it across a speedbump in a low-riders club carpark, yet the Landcruiser (which is in use by our military) has always been the ultimate choice for those who need off-road capability, reliability and power. So?
Toyota.

Why are “Americans” so against American made stuff. Seems like there’s too many idiots on here posting as if it were American made or Japanese made? Truth is, the parts are all made in different places, and assembled somewhere else. How many people knew the BMW engines are sent here to be assembled with the cars in AMERICA!!! Damn man, if so many of these ungrateful children are ashamed of what America produces, then fly over seas and join the rest of the world. As for America, we’ve got the fastest production car for the price right now, pound for pound, that’s murdering European, Japanese, and Italians’ best cars worth three times as much. Be grateful about where you live and the privileges you have and what your country produces!

More capable, better looking, more versatile, highly customizable.
On my third Jeep with no major problems. Just plain fun to drive.
I laugh at comments about Toyotas. Father owned one, hated it.
Brother has a late model RAV4, had to battle with Toyota to have it repainted as all the paint was coming off.

We oughta quite this, we no Toyota’s fell on their A$$ in the quality departrment,..not a good argument anymore. Even the people that own them are complaining…there’s your answer.
Jeep could be a piece a sh#T & IT’S Way out in front of the newcomer FJ Cruiser that was way “Under Engineered” to compete with the JK Wrangler offroad, that’s not even an argument.

Toyota’s quality went to crap,…FJ’s have so many problems that Toyota’s not sure how to handle it. DUH! get your quality back, your Company got cocky & the die hard brainless public got fooled with this Soft-road FJ Cruiser.

FJ all the way… wranglers were good back in the 40s when we were at war. Since then, wranglers are absolute trash compared to the FJ. Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler are circling the drain….the decision to kill the viper is living proof of that. After they die off then the rest of the american cars will too. GM is too far behind in the race for eco-friendly engines and Ford, well, ford just plain blows.

Whats with these compares, the Kia Sorento out scored(placed higher) than the FJ Cruiser, compare a JK Wrangler Unlimited with another JK Wrangler Unlimited, that is the only vehicle you can compare with(it’s own brother). It’s at a whole different level than anything out there…I guess the FJ crowd oughta be flattered to even be spoken in the same sentence as a JK Wrangler Unlimited,,, I’m glad for them.. But they still have to wake tomorrow with the real reality of how crazy that is.

Having owned both a FJ and a Jeep Wrangler I would have to say Wrangler for offroad….FJ for onroad…….
When it gets down to it though, the jeep is so much funnier to drive with the top down, etc that it overrides the nice ride of IFS that gives the FJ the only advantage onroad.
I started out with a TJ…loved it, when the FJ’s came out had to have one so traded my TJ in …. 8 months later I am back in an 08 jeep wrangler… Wont be trading again….. will keep the jeep a lifetime….

Go home FJ, there’s no way you can run with the Big Boy’s, not unless Toyota does a needed “Recall” and foots the bill to fix there big big mistake, by putting a Solid Front Axle in each one they built so far. That’s what all the FJ Crowd wants now anyway…Toyota, if you want to compete with a JK Wrangler Unlimited, then go back to the drawing board, or just hire a few JEEP people that Wheel & Rock Climb…they’ll show you how
John

Jim
Feb 21, 2008 at 5:48 pm
First off why would any body in their right mind compare something that’s not comparable, the FJ should be compared to the new Liberty not a JK Wrangler, it’s out of it’s league. And to put the Rubicon in the sentence as an FJ, is total insanity. The JK Wrangler Unlimited is the top Utilitarian vehicle off any show room today =Period. If Toyota would of brought back a Real FJ in Real FJ form(FJ 40), only then you would have a comparison, “SFA” not “IFS”, You put 33’s on, lift it 2″, & Disconnect an “X”, it will Spank all of these wanna bee’s out there. With no Articulation the FJ dangles in the air on 2 wheels, enough said…. This comparison is ridiculous, this is like comparing King Kong against your Yorkie.. get a grip and do a fair comparison.
Fair = 2008 Liberty VS FJ Cruiser is the only Jeep Comparison
Greg
Feb 21, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Ok I’m assuming the comparison is of the 4 door jeep due to the fact the FJ is 4 door. In any case I’d have to say the jeep. Nothing better than having no limits. Top on or off? Hardtop or soft top? Full hardtop or T tops removed? On road or off road? The versatility of the jeep is what made me trade in my toyota in the first place.
Pete
Feb 21, 2008 at 5:38 pm
Apples to oranges. The FJ is offroad caple but most of the people that but them will never hit the dirt. The jeep on the other hand is meant for offroad from the start. Its onroad manners are good but offer few luxories. I may be biased because I own a 08 Wrangler. Depends on what you want.

FJ–Fixed hardtop only, non-removable doors, manual transmission doesn’t have part-time 4WD, independent front suspension.
JK (Wrangler)–Removable hardtop, removable doors, manual transmission with part-time 4WD, solid axles.
The people designing the JK know what it takes to go off-road.

Well, if you plan to attack trails with your rig, go with the Jeep.
If you plan to attack speed bumps at the mall, go with the FJ.
The FJ cruiser is a pathetic attempt by Toyota to reclaim the heritage of the FJ40, which was originally built to steel military contracts from Jeep. Toyota failed at stealing contracts back in the 50’s and 60’s, and they certainly failed at building a worthy update to the FJ40.
Toyota makes a great CAR, but we all know there is only one JEEP!

Feb 21, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Looked at both, bought the Wrangler Unlimited.
For me, it came down to these 5 things:
1) Jeep…summer time…top off. FJ…nope, same old enclosed feel, like any other SUV.
Winner Jeep
2) Jeep…summer time…doors off. FJ….nope, same old enclosed feel, like any other SUV.
Winner Jeep
3) Jeep…regular unleaded. FJ…premium. Gas price check…
Winner Jeep
4) Jeep…4 doors (yes, the picture shows the Wrangler model, but there is the Wrangler Unlimited which is outselling the Wrangler model easily)…fairly easy for two full size adults to still get in the back seat with some semblance of dignity. FJ….suicide doors…
Winner Jeep
5) Jeep…Rubicon edition with super off road ability from the factory. FJ…not bad by any means, but still not up to the Rubicon package.
Winner Jeep
The FJ does have the Jeep beat in the engine power category. It has the Jeep beat in the “luxury features” category as well.
So it really depends on what you are wanting your vehicle to do.
For me in the end, it was not even close.
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon.
