Spied: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

By Drew

Left Lane News

Spy photographers have spotted a prototype of the upcoming Hyundai Genesis Coupe while doing some cold weather testing in Northern Sweden. Although Hyundai has already shown a concept version of the coupe, these spy photos reveal some interior details to expect in the production model. The automatic transmission will have a manual shift mode, but it doesn’t appears as steering wheel mounted paddles will be available.

The car’s center stack looks to be nearing production-ready and features a large LCD screen atop the stack. The coupe’s gauge cluster appears to have a futuristic, two-pod design. Shots of the car’s back seat reveals that the Genesis Coupe will have a 2+2 setup, with cup holders separating the rear buckets. Despite only having two doors, rear seat legroom looks surprisingly ample.

The rear seat spy shots also reveal that the production car won’t have the dramatic window treatment aft of the B-pillars as seen on the Genesis Coupe Concept. We’ve also include a couple of earlier spy shots that show the car’s base four-cylinder engine. A V6 will also be offered but a V8 is a long shot at this point. More photos at Left Lane News.

the base 4 banger has 223 horses and the v6 has 310 horses
just because it doesn’t have huge amounts of horsepower doesn’t mean it can’t keep up with a mustang.
it’s lighter than any mustang, and i’ll bet that it can beat a mustang that’s in the same price range anyday in the technical tracks

Piss on ford.. Mustangs are not fast at all. Would not even drive one. But to say foriegn cars can’t hang with american muscle blah blah…

Man Hyundai better compete with Kia shit! Hyundai brought all this attention to possibly putting a V8 in this dam Genesis when they knew that they were not gonna do it anyway. Even if it was a V8, it would still suck. And I get tired of folks putting out these V6’s with nice horsepower but weak ass torque (like the new Infinite G37 with 330 hp but 270 tq……dats bullshit). So with a V6 it would still suck asz. And how come everyone wants to attack a stock asz V8 mustang????????????????? Is it becuz 300 hp is the max hp you can hook a civic up to on a burger king budget with a turbo and nos??? I mean 300 hp is nice but why not attack the fastest factory built mustang???? Why attack one that’s in between as far as horsepower? Why not attack the fucking SHELBY GT500KR???? I think I can answer that question. CUZ THESE DAM IMPORTS CANT MAKE A FACTORY BUILT MACHINE FOR THAT PRICE OR HORSEPOWER.

“We’ve also include a couple of earlier spy shots that show the car’s base four-cylinder engine” A four-cylinder car trying to overtake a mustang? No way, especially not a Hyundai

this whip is going to be off the hook, id put money on this car over a mustang any day, the mustang is the weakest of the american muscle cars, ford needs to discontinue the pathetic 4.6 and replace it with a real V8

Feb 25, 2008 at 7:39 pm

this has to be a joke,
the only thing a foreign company has on any american muscle is gas mileage,
this car looks like your average sports factory rice car.

Well if I remember right, Hyundai’s use Mitubishi engines, so will it be the evo X motor? I think it looks cool. But I cant afford a new car so bleh.

I read somewhere that the genesis was going to be an AWD beast that was targeted to compete with the EVO!?

nope, its not like not “retro” but it dosnt have the classic muscle car look. it looks more like a chevy malibu or impala or something like that.

if you seriously think that this thing is going to take down the mustang you are mentally challenged, the mustang has been the most iconic pony car in history and its been around 44 years to boot. trust me, no hyundai is going to stop the mustang or anything else american for that matter.

hey, think of it as a step up for the company though, finally used rwd, to bad they are still not manly enough to use a v8, no way a v6 is going to beat anything american witha v8.

Face it!! Cars like the Mustang are icon cars with die hard enthusiasts who would still buy it if the wheels fell off only two miles from the dealership. Can Hyundai establish it’s own following of performance junkies? Probably. And they will most likely do it by stealing less loyal customers, but walk over the Mustang?? NO!!! That’s like asking a Corvette guy if he’d buy a new Tiburon. You just can’t knock cars like the Mustang and Corvette off their pedestal.

Will it cut into the Mustang’s market? Probably not. It would be nice to see a quality sports vehicle come out of Hyundai, or just a quality vehicle in general. They have made some great strides in their quality in the past few years, so I think this will be more of a barometer of how Hyundai is developing as a manufacturer than anything. On a side note, I think gramatically impossible to read posts such as ARMANDO’s should just be deleted.

The car don’t look bad, cant wait till the new Camaro comes out though. I would save my pennies for that before buying this….

Time was when American cars laughed at the Japanese cars. Now, both of them laugh at Korean cars. But, accept it or not, Korean cars are coming of age. And this Hyundai is not one to be laughed at. I’d say it’s gonna be a nice car to drive. Let’s wait and see if we could laugh at this one…I guess not.

People may rush to the dealership at first just to have something new, but in a years time when their car is worth 5 bucks will it be worth it? Hyundai’s are just not good cars sorry…

To further t-sizzle’s comment…Hyundai will have a drift sponsored team with the Genesis coupe (I’m not sure if that will be the official name). The thing I wonder is, which power plant will be best turbo I-4 or the V6…..no one is sure what engines are going in either……..engine type I mean, like beta II or the world engine…same as the Evo X or some other one.

Feb 24, 2008 at 8:14 am

I think that it will over take the Mustang, Just because people are getting sick of the same old thing. I never liked any Hyundai’s but this is the first one that looks cool and I kinda like.

I think is the price is pretty fair the Genesis will sell out pretty quick… Now if they just use Phil collins in there Ad they’ll have it made Lol..

Thats my 2 cents

You laugh now like american did in the past, Gmc never thought that a car form another side of the world would take thier market. NEVER SAY NEVER ! funny most america never buy thier own cars ! Why ?
yes who would have belive that toy and honda has taken the usa?
think before you buy.

im not against hyundai, im not one to hate on a certain company like that. hopefully it does well, but i dont have my expectations set too high.

mike
Feb 24, 2008 at 5:01 am

I don’t think it will stand chance. Like one magazine said the only good it will do is hopefully keep the prices lower for American Muscle. But hmmm… past Hyundai’s bad transmissions for one, plus there isn’t a big after market sector for them. Hell Mustangs have boat loads of aftermarket go fast goodies available. I’m giving this car a life of two to three years. Same for the Genesis, cuz the new G8s are gonna kick ass and take names. Let’s not forget parts will be as hard to get and just as expensive as BMW and Mercedes parts, Hyundais suck ass!

Feb 23, 2008 at 4:20 pm

…yeah…kinda does have resemblance to a tiburon. You know, people will probably buy it just because it is an import(even though I heard that Hyundai’s are junk)…

diddy
Feb 23, 2008 at 3:45 pm

it will sell about as much as the tiburon not great but descent

GMS
Feb 23, 2008 at 1:21 pm

It does kinda look like a smooshed Tib…
Last I checked cars form Korea are still disposable…ive driven them when the come back from a 3 or 4 year lease with 60-80 000kms and the engines are worn out…like the cars shake and smoke really bad. however….Hyundai is starting to come around….the 2006 sonata was a BIG improvement over all their other cars. If they did make these RWD cars they would sell….but you wont see them out passing any mustangs or camaros when they come out.

Looks pretty sweet to me. The thing that tickles me is that it’s putting out more power than the v8 stang, and it’s only a six-banger.

If those guys put a nice one together you gotta figure they are on a role and pockets are deepening at Hyundai. In any case I’d rather see a Hyundai then a GM or Ford trust me.
