Toyota Georgetown Assembly – TMMK

If you do one thing on a road trip, you should visit a factory, and the coolest factories in America make cars. On my recent road trip vacation from Detroit to Savannah, GA and back, we stopped in Georgetown, KY to visit the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky plant (TMMK). TMMK is home to the largest Toyota plant in North America and produces the Camry, the Camry Solara, the Camry Solara Convertible, and the Avalon. It’s a fully integrated plant, meaning they not only assemble the cars there, but also make stampings and engines and plastics, too. The free tour included a short video presentation on working at the plant and a nearly hour-long tram ride right on the assembly lines. You’re within 20 feet of the conveyor for most of the ride–about as good of a view as you can get at any plant in the US. The visitors center includes several car cutaways, a Toyota merchandise shop, and displays on the history of Toyota. They don’t allow cameras past the front door, so this is the only shot I have! Have you been to an assembly plant? Tell us about it!

A while ago my family and I went on vacation to Bowling Green, Kentucky, which goes down in history as one of my favorite places on earth.

The Corvette murals painted on the side of the local Wendy’s was just a hint of what was coming: a tour of the Corvette (and Cadillac XLR) assembly plant! I was pretty young back then, and cameras are not allowed, so I don’t remember much about the tour. I remember that there was a cutaway Corvette engine block in the “waiting room,” that was really cool. We were able to go on a guided tour through all of the Corvette’s assembly, and it was great. I would recommend it to any one.

After the tour we visited the famed National Corvette Museum nearby, which had quite a selection of Corvettes, accessories and even die-cast models. It was great! We took a few pictures with our film camera, I’ll try and find them and post them on my ride page. Also, I bought a Corvette shirt that has gotten way to small for me. I’ll try to post some pics on my ride page.
