G8 GT Stomps Charger R/T in Edmunds Comparo
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
Edmunds just published a comparison test between the Pontiac G8 GT and the Dodge Charger R/T. It wasn’t even close. They found the Pontiac to be superior in just about every category, despite its lower price.
Forget for a moment that in every performance category the G8 GT walks all over the Charger R/T. Go ahead and overlook the G8’s more aggressive decoration and attractively sinister countenance. Just concentrate your mind on this: The Pontiac is cheaper. Its $29,995 base price is $1,460 under the cost of a Charger R/T, and the as-tested price of this red G8 GT is a thick $3,810 less than the as-tested price of this Charger R/T.
The G8 GT’s $32,745 price is a flat raging bargain. And we Americans love bargains — even when the car is built in Australia.

actually edmunds did test it against an srt8 as well, and your srt8 only had the pontiac by a fender in the 0-60 and the quarter mile. With such a huge difference in horse power 425 vs 361 you should be ashamed ! The pontiac is only 56 lbs lighter. See for yourself. OF course they compared it to the Charger R/T – because had they done the same comparison against the Charger SRT8 it would’ve seriously embarassed Pontiac and all G8 owners out there!
Lets be real and not biased. The Charger R/T is slow…much slower and much less of a performer than the Charger SRT8…much less in everything in fact…less comfortable…less interior options etc. I’m a personal owner of a Charger SRT8. It is rated at approx 440 hp. 0-60 time of approx 4.5 to 5.0 seconds (depending on conditions) and it’ll easily do 165-170 mph top speed. No G8 would even come close. The Charge SRT8 has a fully independent four-wheel suspension, and Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team has upgraded items like the front and rear sway bars, as well as the bushings and the spring rates, to better deliver on the car’s promise of high-performance handling. A pontiac GTO however will be in the same category but not a G8. Nice going edmunds… Next time compare a zo6 to a ford pinto and rave about how much faster the z06 is….seriously…give your heads a shake.

LOL… We Know the price is cheap.. and its cheap for a reason. I sale cars the resale on your G8 is going to be total S*** Hope you plan to keep it for a long time. Its cool if you like Pontiac. I cant stand Pontiac, I would love the speed and power, but they should’ve put that engine in a Caddy or a Chevy.

Who cares about the R/T name? I do for one. I love American muscle, but I have to admit, ever since Dodge came out with the SRT label, the nostalgia of the R/T has suffered which is a bummer. I see R/Ts everywhere, and I have to wonder if those cars really deserve that label. Many great rides have had the designation. Among them: the old Charger, Challenger, Coronet, even the Spirit had a limited edition R/T which, trust me, it’s a kick in the pants. I own a Spirit R/T as most of you regular bloggers know. As for restoration, yeah it’s more fun, but would you really drive your prized ride in the rain? That’s why they still make caveman cars for those of us who like to manhandle our rides all the time, even in bad weather.

Who cares about the SRT8, it still looks like the crappy version. All the charger does is HYPE people up, just like DODGE has done for years, since when was a CHARGER a FOUR door? The interiors are still primitive and boxxy, The handling is mediocre, But it LOOKS COOL. You might not agree but I would spend the extra on something with that All in one package. Not a CHRYSLER PRODUCT. I’m sorry but if you want a Muscle car then Restore one, ITS MORE FUN. Stop bringing the caveman cars back.

to the anonymous gentleman below. Your right, “who cares about the R/T”. SRT8 Charger vs the G8 GXP with the LS3 6.2 litre which also puts out 430hp. Just wait, Im sure will get the same results!

Yeah baby ::pumps fist in the air:: Thats what Im talking about. I really like the Charger R/T, but to hear that the Pontiac is cheaper and has superior performance just makes me smile. This is the third GM car that has killed its closest compotion. Caddy CTS, Malibu, and now this. With the success of the 900 platform (Trucks and SUV’s) this just might give GM the imgage boost it so desperatly needs.
