Trans Am Racing Anyone?

By Mike

AKA Mr. Angry

With the resurgence in the pony car market, I can’t help but think: wouldn’t it be cool to see these cars duke it out on the race track just like they did back in the day? Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers all going toe to toe. They could make one HELL of manufacturers racing series. No more cookie cutter NASCAR racers that resemble jelly beans only turning left, no more one size fits all bullsh*t.

It would also make a great amateur series as well. Granted, I have I no idea what it costs to run a race series and or put one together, but I can’t help but think that this would be a wise move. It would get people excited again to own a muscle car, and would help bring back that old adage, "race on Sunday, sell on Monday."

Hmm… Well, one can dream I suppose.

Yes, bring back the Trans Am series because American motorsports needs something great, something to knock NASCAR off its pedestal. I’d like it best if they brought it back exactly as it was with the ponycars from the late 60s and early 70s. However, using only classic cars would make it much more expensive to get into and would, in my opinion, hurt its image as a real racing series. So, why not use our new sports cars? Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, the new GTO (even if you don’t like it, V-8, rear drive, it be good for this), maybe even the Caddilac CTS-V and the new Charger. Basically, as many freaking V-8 rear drive ponycars/musclecars as can be found. As for the tracks, Sebring, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio, Infineon; Daytona, Talladega, and Indy all have infield road courses, Virginia Int’l Raceway, all the various street courses that CART used to use like Longbeach and Detroit. Anyways, that’s what I hope to see. Any additional comments or annotations to my post would be much welcomed.

Hey guys, check this out……

Being in the old school muscle car market, the company I work for is helping sponsor a Time Attack style series to bring back some of the old Trans-Am style cars and give those that own them a chance to get ‘em back on the track. Currently tying into the existing Redline Time attack series, we’re sponsoring classes strictly for pre’73 and pre ’86 V8/V6 American Iron Muscle Cars. Classes are set up for stock, modified and unlimited categories, with races being run throughout the country (check out the http://www.redlinetimeattack.com for more info. The next race we’re sponsoring is at California Speedway, July 19th and 20th, but if your interested in seeing this type of racing at one of the other events or interested in participating with your own old school muscle car (driving instructors are available at the track for those that don’t have much track experience), send me an email or contact the guys at Redline Track Events.

-”fuck it… no one who drives a mustang or any other muscle car these days actually care about doing anything with turns. They all just want to be the fastest in a straight line with their gas-guzzling v8s. Domestics are circling the drain.”

yeah domestics are done… thats why the Charger, GTO, Challenger, Barracuda, Camaro and Mustang are making combacks, but yeah domestics totally suck. i own a mustang and i think autocross and roadracing are cool and plan on doing some of both.

and i definately think they should bring trans am back, just gut the interiors and put them on the track. theres nothing stock about “stock” cars, and i agree that theyre boring.

Hate to break the news to you guys but Adolf(NASCAR)Hitler…sorry NASCAR…I believe is going to start a developmental series with the pony cars(Mustang/Challenger/Camaro)Basically a stepping stone to thenow called Nationwide series. As far as NASCAR what happen to qualifing to get a spot in the race. The Indy 500 has done qaulifing same for over 90 years.Hey if Helio isn’t fast enough guess what,he packs the hauler and goes home.Brickyard…totally opposite. If you don’t have a multi-car,million dollar team w/ sponsor…why show up?NASCAR bring back REAL qualifing!!!It’s all about put up or go home, that’s what fans want to see.If you do,more people would be drawn to the series and your Chase to the Cup would be more exciting.

Its amazing how many ppl get on these things and have to call one another names. Its funny going thro these things and reading what others post about it. But mann, seriously all you guys need to grow up and stop calling ppl names and things on here.

Anyways, i think it would be cool to see these cars racing again, but now its all about the money, all those cars are worth alot.

Hey Rice And Chopsticks, I don’t believe I said anything against you, so grow up. Your 9th grade teacher will give you detention if he catches you posting online during class.

It wouldn’t be like LeMans, because the cars should be left pretty much stock, with just some engine and suspension tweaks. The only stock part of LeMans cars are the car’s shell, and that’s a bit of a stretch. Seriously, take the stock car, throw a roll cage in it, limit engine size to however much they feel, do some suspension mods to it and off you go. I’m not saying that the American cars will destroy everything. Personally, I think the Mustang and Challenger are ugly, and the Camaro is too little, too late. I’m just saying that if Detroit really feels the need to prove themselves to the world, throwing all those other cars in would do it, and just for curiosity’s sake, I’d like to see what they could do against the world.

If they are going in a straight line, how can they be circling the drain?

I fully agree that we need a new production-based racing series. Unfortunately, you’re probably going to end up going back to the headache of everyone complaining that some factory is ponying up too many bucks, that the cars aren’t truly equal (displacement, weight, traction control, etc), and that too much electronics make the cars hard to tech. Exactly what happened to NASCAR.

On the other hand folks, there’s also talk in NASCAR circles that the final phase of the top series going to a fully spec car, that the Nationwide (nee’ Busch) Series may go to ponycar bodies to give the series its own identity.

BTW, that’s my friend Ken Epsman driving the Sam Posey #77 Challenger in your title image. He also owns a Mark Donohue Sunoco Camaro, ’88 Bill Elliott Coors T-Bird, ’89 Rusty Wallace Kodiak Grand Prix, ’64 Daryl Dieringer Marauder, and ’72 Bobby Unser Pepsi Torino. Wish I could afford his toys!

Yeah this would rock! Maybe even two classes the old school rear wheel drive, and a lil new school feel with a front wheel drive class. Hell make it 3 with an AWD class for the subaru’s and what not!

That would be so soooo cool if they bring back the old TA. I love watching the old TA online and think it had to be one of the coolest things ever. I would even get a car together to race if they did.

Awesome Idea, they are in the process of bringing back a lot of the old cars, why not put together a little league. The Trans Am would be sweeeet, thats something I want to see back on the market.

Feb 26, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Or if you really want to make it interesting and show the world what American muscle can do, throw the M3, RS4, and SLK in there as well.

Feb 26, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I agree with Nissan63, but I think the 350Z would be a better choice since it’s rear drive only. It might also put a cattle prod up Toyota and Honda’s asses to get the Supra and NSX back on the road.

Feb 26, 2008 at 12:13 pm

This would only make sense so it will never happen! I wouldnt even mind seeing it with a modern twist to it. Mustang, Camaro, Challenger(should be the charger), throw in the GTR and some other modern cars and go race!

Feb 26, 2008 at 5:12 am

this would be a great idea, both as a starter series and a pro series. although im like you i have no idea how much it costs to run a series i do agree that it would be hugely popular in the public eyes and proabaly a complete success. if anyone out there thinks it would be awesome to see this kind of racing, the Australians are doing it with the ford falcon and the holden commodore (pontiac g8) just go to http://www.v8supercar.com.au and get a taste of what we’re missing with our top series.

Feb 26, 2008 at 3:28 am

I agree 100%. Don’t get me wrong I love watching NASCAR but it’s true, it deffinantly aint like it used to be. To many rules and it requires far to much money to ever have a chance to race, not to mention the fact that if the cars didn’t have a sticker telling you the make you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. It would be very cool to see more or less “stock” cars and everyday people running on the tracks. I understand the safety rules that they have implemented throughout the years but they have also really limited many other aspects of the sport.

IT WOULD BE GREAT BUT WITH ONLY ONE GLICH MAKE THEM ALL RIGHT OFF THE SHOWROOM FLOOR STOCK SO THAT WE COULD ALL GET INVOLVED WITHOUT THERE BEING A MEGABUCK CLASS IN OTHER WORDS A MUSTANG GT,CAMAROAND CHALLENGERS IN THE SAME HP TORQUE AND GEAR RATIOS EVERYTHING EXACT AS IF IT WAS JUST DRIVEN OUT THE SHOWROOM THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD BE DIFFERENT IS THE DRIVER AND MAKE WOW I’D LIKE TO SEE THAT.NOT SOME PRO COMPANY SETTING UP A CAR TO RUN THE TA. IT’LL NEVER HAPPEN BUT I HOPES

Tyler, just a question for ya. Could you name me 10 things the Taurus in the driveway has in common with the one on the circuit? Sorry, the name doesn’t count. My definition of stock is functional doors, mirrors, lights, proper drivetrain(never saw a RWD Taurus on the street unless the SHO was. I can’t remember), wipers, etc. I don’t expect carpet and a radio, but I do like to see a touted stock car that has all the basic workings of mine. As for Speedfest, I’ve heard of it, and I think it’s great. I get a little nervous though thinking of what would happen if a Boss Mustang collided with a Hemi Cuda. Ouch!! That’s gotta be an expensive wreck. But, that’s racing I guess…

This would be a wonderful thing for a lot of types of people. I hope it happens. The days of Mark Donahue revived! I would only worry that only folks with fat wallets would be able to enter a car.
NASCAR will never be the same.

Just the thought out that makes my backside sore! LOL! But seriously
I agree with retroman. I love NASCAR, but it seems to have become a
“race of rules”, not like the 50s and 60s. “Race on Sunday, sell on Monday” This blog is about “Trans-American” racing cars, not NASCAR.
I’ve gone to the Coronado/SRT (Chrysler) Classic Speed Festival every year at NAS North Island since it began, mainly to see the “Trans-Am” series race cars. It’s the original cars going at it just like it’s 1970 all over again. I think bringin’ the Trans-Am racing back would be good for the sport of racing and promoting their cars. Check my page out, I got some pics and vids from this last years “Speed Fest”, as it’s called here in San Diego.

I don’t see why you guys are hatin on NASCAR. And retroman, They are stock cars. I would love to see this, but why all gang up on NASCAR. Its a wounderful sport.

Ahhhh….the smell of Trans Am. REAL cars on REAL tracks doing some REAL racing. I’d definitely watch this over the heavily commercialized jellybean nonstock racing that NASCAR has become. NASCAR should change it’s name. It’s wandered too far from the good ol days of redneck bootleggers getting together to see who had the fastest Model A.

I would love to see the old Trans-Am series ressurected. The closest thing right now is the Le-Mans series, but that only show cases the high end sports cars. The SCCA racing gives more variety, but I would love to see a nationally televised production car based series.

Ernie
Feb 25, 2008 at 7:03 pm

I agree. I’d rather watch something like this than NASCAR.
