Honda Civic Hybrid or VW Jetta TDI: Which Would You Choose?

By Rob

Editor-in-Chief

So you want to go green, but don’t feel like you have to announce it to the entire world by buying an ugly ass Prius? Want something that’s more of a driver’s car? Two great options for around $23k are the Honda Civic Hybrid and the VW Jetta TDI. Which would you choose, the Japanese hybrid or the German diesel?

You guys behave like a bunch of girls on heat, Both technologies are good, whichever you embrase it’s all good. At this point it’s only a matter of choice, no one’s gonna put a gun to your head force you to buy what you don’t want. however if you’re a real passionate driver you’ll choose the Jetta, my look femenine from the outside but once behind the wheel you’ll think you’re special even do your not. I’m talking to you fat boy. That said you driving the hybrid may want to consider a nice mini skirt and maybe an old lady’s hat (driving miss daisy).

Jetta all the way … I used to have a 82 Jetta and on long trips we would get 60 MPG! With out the turbo you get better mpg. Later turbos get 50 to 55 mpg. Just look on ebay and you will see 80’s jetta’s with 200,000 miles selling for $3,000 to $4,000. Here are the links to prove it…http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=15

I’d rather pay for the repair bill on a diesel then a hybrid any day, must I say more!

VW. no questions. I just filled up 15.5 gal for 992 miles. cant beat it. hands down. Even with Diesel at 4+ dollars it makes more sense.

Has anyone seen deieel prices? No one’s saving money in the diesel market anymore.. why they’re still pushing it is beyond me..

Jamie
Mar 15, 2008 at 4:41 am

Gasoline= $3.20 per gallon. Civic gets 50 mpg.
Diesel= $4.00 per gallon. Tdi gets 45 mpg.

Do the math.

Also, gasoline is cleaner than diesel.

However,
I own the Civic Hybrid and I love it, but I will be trading it in in a few years to avoid the high maintenance costs after my warranty is up. The TDI uses a much more reliable and efficient technology.

My point is, if you intend to buy a new car every 4 or 5 years, go hybrid….if you want something for longer than that, go TDI all the way.

P.S.

The prius is so gay. I love passing them in my Civic Hybrid. Oh, and I can’t wait for the Honda CR-Z.

Dave

Definitely the Jetta. I own a 2002 TDI and get 55 mpg on the road, 50 overall average (750 miles+ between fill-ups). And the power/torque!!! My TDI will pull any hill faster than my Jeep (4.0L 178hp)! Plus it can run on biodiesel. And lastly, none of the problems that the prior generation of diesels had… no smoke, no smell, starts instantly in cold weather.

Since American muscle isn’t a option, I’d have to pick the Civic…

THE CIVIL LOOKS BETTER?????????? ARE YOU SERIOUS?????

FEZ
Feb 29, 2008 at 5:20 pm

DEFINETLY JETTA TDI. MORE TORQUE, MORE RELIABLE, SERVICING IS CHEAPER THAN A HYBRID. WITH A HYBRID THE BATTERY NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AFTER COUPLE OF YEARS. I HAVE A DIESEL JETTA WITH 735,000 MILES WITH ORIGINAL ENGINE AND TRANSMITION. ITS A VW NEED I SAY MORE

Marcus
Feb 29, 2008 at 4:20 pm

Both of the cars look gay. The civic is 100000x better if it’s a coupe.

I wouldn’t pick either one

JAY

da civic 4 sure u will get fucked trying to find diesel fuel plus diesel stinks

Colin
Feb 29, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I own a Civic, I’d buy the TDI. Not dought in my mind. You really can’t compare the 2..

Feb 29, 2008 at 8:19 am

I think that I would definatly go with the diesel. I have a 2006 new Jetta Diesel and it smells but who the fuck puts their face up to the exhaust. PLUS! the new Deisel is CRD which is improved in many many ways. Read the article if you dont believe me. Hybrids Are CRAP! Diesel is better. Dont think like the 50 year old people do. Diesel has improved. And if its still too slow……Look at the BMW diesel or Benz or Chip the Jetta and get better performance.

I’m sure you think your farts smell like roses then, because Diesel SMELLS HORRIBLE!

Anonymous
Feb 29, 2008 at 3:12 am

People will often say that the diesel car is dirty and the exhaust gives off pungent odors. The technology has much improved to eliminate this. I’d go with the VW.

Diesel smells horrible! Honda’s are for chicks. Nuff said

vw,for sure.

toxicvid.com
Feb 28, 2008 at 3:37 pm

Those Hybrid sh*t are not worth it if you mostly drive on the highway because once you get above a certain speed, the car runs only on the gas making the mpg just as much as any economy car. The VW is a pain because you can’t go to a local maintainance shop for simple maintainance like changing the transmition oil. My choice is neither.

“Franck from Kansas City” forgot the most important reason….The VW looks better

Franck from Kansas City
Feb 28, 2008 at 3:00 pm

For Safety (thickness of the steel, laser welding, ESP, first car to ace side impact collision IIHS.com): VW
For Resale Value (KBB.com top resale value brand #1; w/ Jetta in top 10 along with Rabbit and EOS): VW
For Overall Gas Mileage (50+mpg hwy): VW
For Torque (140 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque): VW
For Dependability (that’s personal – driven 12 in the last 20 years loved everyone of them, lived in France for 17 yrs. These cars are solid): VW
For Price (just because two cars have the same sticker price does not mean you get the same features/equipment standard): VW
The decision is an easy one. You should be able to order a TDI this late spring/summer and take delivery late fall, maybe sooner. Happy clean driving!

Come on guys… Volkswagen and enthusiasts actually stand by and race their diesels. Have you ever seen someone race a Hybrid Civic?

Billy Boy
Feb 28, 2008 at 7:35 am

This is actually an easy one folks! Diesel technology has been around for well over 100 years, while there is speculation that the hybrid battery packs may be VERY costly when they go out. I’ve test driven the VW diesels. They are great! Fantastic torque, great gas mileage, really fun to drive. I’d take the VW diesel ANYDAY over the Honda. And w/ the new clean diesel technology, the decision becomes even easier! I’m saving up for one now.

Volkswagen Jetta TDI for sure. The new Civic sedans just don’t do it for me.

If you A. want to stay a Virgin, or B. never have sex again, buy one of these. I don’t see any panties dropping rolling up in a hybrid. They both look like 08 Geo metro’s.

Civic. Probably will never drive anything else.

Feb 28, 2008 at 2:32 am

I’ll take the Jetta or “Jedi” as some friends and I nicknamed it. Hybrids are over rated. The only thing I think is cool about the Honda is it has what appears to be the farthest raked windshield I’ve seen on any production car-> very aerodynamic.

Hybrids suck, there not as “fuel conservative” as a euro diesel car. take for example a prius get 44 mpg and a VW polo diesel can get up to 75 mpg.

Hands down, Jetta. I love Hybrids, but the VW Diesel tech is dope.

SuzyBruisy
Feb 27, 2008 at 8:17 pm

I’d get the Jetta, pull the drivetrain and swap it into my diesel Escort, then part out the VW’s remains. Then I’d have the feather-weight of an 80’s econobox with the torque of a modern diesel. It’d totally rip!

eric

The jetta.
