Son Finds Dad's Wrecked GTO Thirty-five Years Later
By Rob
Editor-in-Chief
Back in the mid-70s Steve’s dad shipped his ‘67 GTO over to Cyprus (an island near Greece). Then, while driving back home from a wedding with three friends, his father lost control of the car on a treacherous mountain road and pitched over a steep cliff. One of his father’s friends was killed, and of course, the car was destroyed. Flash forward thirty-five years. Steve, who had heard the story from his father, who had seen the faded photos of the GTO in scrapbooks, who had searched for the car on several trips out to Cyprus, was finally able to locate the wrecked GTO after a fire burned away all the surrounding brush on the hillside. He even got a photo of himself standing on the wrecked car, just like the photo of his dad thirty five years ago. You can see all the pics and read the full story on Mike’s ‘67 GTO ride page.

That’s an amazing story. I’m surprised the car was still there. Must’ve been impossible for someone to have pulled it out of there. My bro-in-law had two ‘66 Mustangs with inline sixes when he was in college, one was a red notchback which was such a rotted mess he gave it away to his neighbor. Last I heard, It was restored as a drag car. I got the steering wheel hanging on my wall though. The other was a Springtime Yellow convertible his parents were going to restore for him. Well to make a long story short, watch which shop you have do the work ’cause the car was swiped faster than I can say Gone in 60 Seconds. I know this is unlikely, but if anyone in the Pittsburgh area sees a rotting yellow ‘vert or any ‘66 Mustang ‘vert for that matter, please give me a holler so I can check the VIN. That car meant alot to the family.

What a great story and the photos really made it come to life. I Can truly relate. My father has been gone for several years but last year I was able to track down 6 of my father’s old airplanes that he had owned and flown as a young man and the emotion that I felt was unreal once I actually walked up and touched them.
