Five People Dead at Daytona Bike Week

By John

Editor

Bike Week in Daytona kicked off on Friday, and five people have already been killed. Two died when the bike they were riding was hit by a truck, another guy missed a turn and died on impact, and a elderly woman was killed when she stepped in front of a pair of riders. While the other unlucky bikers were from out of state, Amedeo Revellini was actually from Daytona, but he still managed to enter a highway against traffic and collide with two other motorcycles. Yikes. Tampa Bay Online doesn’t mention how many of the dead were wearing helmets, but they aren’t required in Florida, and from my experience not many people in the Sunshine State wear them. Given that eight people died over the course of the ten day event last year, it seems like Bike Week is off to a pretty grim start. Hopefully the rest of the event proceeds without any more fatalities.

HEY! Why is it that when bikers do really stupid stuff, they just clean up the mess and nothing changes, but if a couple guys are racing on the street and something happens, they start crushing cars at the first opportunity?

I mean, these do-do’s got the helmet laws repealed and they’re pretty much off limits to legislators, apparently forever.

There is a HUGE double-standard.

I BOUGHT A BIKE BECAUSE OF THE GAS PRICES AND SO HAVE A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE, BUT THEY NEED TO USE THEIR HELMETS IF THEY WANT TO KEEP THEIR BRAINS.

I’d say there were lotsa brains on the road… too bad they weren’t smart enough to be surrounded by helmets.

I’m thinking of saying screw it and not wearing a seat belt. it’s my perogative and hey, bikers can give up their ONLY means of impact protection… I’d still have crumple zones and air bags
-
…so what makes them so freaking special anyway?

Hopefully common sense and caution will prevail. I am here on the east coast for work, but will actually be going down to Daytona tomorrow to check things out and go see the speedway again.
