Kit Cars: DON’T DO IT!
By Mike
AKA Mr. Angry
In this world we have many wonderful things. The sun, the moon and yes, we have eBay. eBay is an interesting place to visit because you just never know what’s going pop up there. My favorite section is under automobiles, specifically the "Replica/Kit Cars" section. There are all sorts of interesting creations here. People try, but rarely succeed, to build a better mousetrap than some of the worlds best automakers. My favorites are the guys that try to duplicate the legendary Lamborghini Countach. I found this gem on eBay and honestly, it’s just painful to look at. From its oversized BFGs on the rear to the "oh so tastefully done" diamond plate around the rear tail lights, this is a car that should be taken out to pasture and shot dead.
The amazing part is that there are quite a few bids on this travesty. What I want to know is: why? If anyone has ever built a kit car please chime in here and educate me. You KNOW it will never be as good as the original, and unless you’re a mechanic, body man, glass guy and wiring specialist the car will most likely come out looking like this poor Lambo wannabe. What’s the deal people?

Those BIG ASS tires do not go with that Lambo “type” body at all. It looks like a toy and it says “hey look at me, I can’t afford a Lambo, however I can almost pretend to be rich.”

Can’t fault a man for his vices, right? As long as it’s not malicious or hurts others… though I’m sure some people here might argue that this one does both.

To each his own. One thing is for sure, I have to give the guy some credit for daring to be different, instead of cruising around in a cookie cutter car that a million other people are driving. Now is the price he is asking fair, hell no. Don’t get me wrong I love American Muscle, and even some imports, but at least this guy isnt rolling in a car that you could see on any street corner in America. THAT is what I find insane!

ive seen a ferrari kit car built onto a fiero chassis and it lookes great. the guy even went all in and put a 500hp engine in it and it can run 12.5 seconds on the 1,4 mile

Why spend the money on it anyway, just use the cash to build up another car to be just as fast.
I say burn it

well, i am planning to do a kit for a shelby cobra…for many reasons. one, try to find one original, two, try to buy one under 7 figures, three, if you did, you wouln’t want to use it to its full potential. the guy that built this lambo just did what all of us do to our cars, put it into his own words in a way. if you build it yourself, what is the shame in that? people say that they could do better, but have they? truth be told though, if your going to embark on a project as large as this one, do the enthusiast world a favor. Do it right. For if anyone, yourself…take pride in what you do to your car, no matter if it takes twice the money and time, no matter how many times you have to do it. If you do something half ass and sell it, where is the pride in it? you more or less end up in a blog like this one, getting critisized for the crappy job you did. All the money, time and effort to get slammed by us, the enthusiasts of cardomain. Think twice before you build another one, and try to do it right next time, with pride and fun your main concern.

Well obviously this one didnt turn out as well..
but ive known some guys with some pretty cool mr2 kit cars or what about the nsx into a ferrari.
Yes yes not all kit cars are from the ground up but yes it is more impressive to see a car built from the ground up.
All in all you’ve still got some balls to drive that around fake lambo with the fake sun glasses you bought from quik trip a perfect match.

Sam, wow you’re right. “kevkev60″ built a Diablo from scratch. He didn’t cannibalize another car… HE BUILT IT FROM SCRATCH… HIMSELF.
-
Ironically, he’s in NY, not far from Mr. Angry’s stomping ground. Hey Mike… maybe you can check it out and see if it’s everything you expected it not to be.
-
Anyway I picked it for Showoff of the Week, because how many people build their rides from the ground up and have it end up anything like this:

Don’t take my word for it folks. Click the link and see for yourself. Its freaking awesome.

There is one guy on car domain who built a lambo that is bad ass. This guy must me a jack of all trades because his car is really nice.
Here is the link to his page:

If I bought this thing, the obviously tacky stuff would go. The rims would be replaced with larger ones, the tires would be lower profile ones. Yes of course that B.S. crap diamond plate would be immediate history and the car would be changed to match the appearance of the real thing as closely as possible.
-
See, that’s the whole idea with kit cars. That’s why they’re available… so that folks can have cars that resemble cars they could never afford. This guy took the kit and made it look like some freaking bumpkin Clampetized a Lamborghini. He was obviously clueless and devoid of taste.

I would remove the Lambo badges. But beyond that, it would be like driving a cartoon version of the real thing. It looks like it could pop wheelies! Sure its stooopid looking to purists, but its well done stupid. It doesn’t have the loose floppy sloppy look of serious Kit Cars. It appears as if it were intended to be a cariciture of the real mcCoy If thats the case, then rock on!
I’ve never understood the kit car phenomenom because kit companies try to hard to look like the real thing. That for me never really works. This, however is obviously an attempt at creating a bufoonish example, almost comedic and again cartoonish.
Yes I would drive it proudly. Its something I would laugh at out loud as I climb from it at car shows, and expensive resturuants, and swanky hotels. Its hilarious. Kudo’s to the designer for having a sense of humor!

I would be upset if someone were trying to pass a kit car as something other than what it was as that would be fraud. I’ll be the first to admit that what really floats my boat is an antique or classic car that is restored to very original appearance. If, for some reason, I wanted a kit car I would want it to look like a stock version of what it was supposed to resemble. The one good thing I might have to say about kit cars is that the kit car is somethng you could afford to drive, whereas the real thing may be beyond your means. At least if you have an accident drivng a kit car you are not detroying a genuine antique or classic.

OH COME ON MIKE… it’s simple. Who the hell can afford a real Lamborghini Countache? Even more so who can afford a Gallardo? Once again, who can afford a real Ferrari, etc? HUH?
-
For this reason and this reason alone, kits are available.
-
Granted, some are very poorly done. Sometimes though, someone with a lot of knowledge builds the chassis and does everything nicely. Sure, resemblances would probably be limited to the exterior (although not in this case), but a good ole’ V8 from the USA under the hood would be fine with me.
-
So what’s your beef with kit cars anyway? Heck, funny cars are kit cars of sorts. Some of the coolest things I’ve seen didn’t come from the production line, or were heavily modified since then. Ain’t nothing wrong with that…

I agree with this IF someone was tryin to clain it as an original or to be as good as a real one, but honestly, i think who ever built this should b happy 4 themselves, there doing what they think is cool, building somethign for themselves to enjoy and same with who ever buys it they buy it becuase its unique and different, and isnt that exactly wat the car hobby is about, making something your own, mods and customization is all about it, its liek puttin lambo doors on a charger or something, build it to what YOU want! be different, express what YOU like and what YOU want, dare to be different!

Who cares?!?! You guys really have nothing better to do but to single people out and ridicule them for doing their own thing they want to do? I can’t believe how much you assholes dog other people for just going about doing their own thing. The writers on this site are just so childish and really give this place a shitty atmosphere. Heaven forbid anybody should go out and do to their car what they like.

I have to agree with Mr. Angry, this is a poor example at best! I have seen some very good Cobra replicas, so I wouldn’t condemn all kit cars. But I must say leave the build to the pros or at least somebody that’s capable!!!

The problem is if you buy this, it would be like buying a FOLEX off some dude in New york city. Its a phony, and thats all anyone would say when they saw it. GM has like 5 different platforms for one vehicle, that brings value way down. Now we have an immatation lambo, WHY SHOULD WE BUY REAL ONES? Oh well I think some kit cars are cool when they arent supposed to be real models. But in this case I would work the extra amount to purchase a real LAMBO.

I agree with the diamond plate on the tail lights.
.
Did you notice each piece of diamond plate is wrapped in chrome
plastic “door edge protector” material?
.
Look at all the damage they did when they did the window install, and all the black silicone glue mess…yuk.
.
It may be street-able, but it who ever built it sure doesn’t have an eye for the small details, which are what really makes a car a great car…
.
I honestly cannot believe that anyone would bid on this, for that price.
.
I could do so much more, for so mush less
